BT CHARLES SWAIN,
She who thinks a noble heart
Better than a noble mien—•
Honors virtue mere than art,
Though 'tis less in fashion seen—
Whatsoe'er her fortune be,
She's the bride—the wife—for me.'
She deems that inward grace
Far surpasses outward show,
She who values less the face
Than that charm the soul can throw J
Whatsoe'er her fortune be,
She's the bride—the wife—for me.
She who knows the heart requires
Something more than lips of dew—
That when love's brief rose expires,
Love itself dies with it, too—
Whatsoe'er her fortune he,
She's the bride—the wife—for me.

The Steam Eniriiic.
The address of Luther Maish, before the American Institute in New York, on the benefits result,
ing to mankind from the discoveries of science, is
spoken of as having been most eloquent and interesting. Apostrophising the steam engine, he
said :
Behold the giant of the nineteenth century, how
he is compelled to tug and strain the tireless sinews of his strength, in countless fields of useftntoeBS
and labor ! See how bravely he beai'3 ue through
the storm, Insensible to cold and careless of sleep,
behold the snow that blockades our path fly before
him in the dim star-light. With mouth full of
fire, and nostrils expanded with smoke, hear him
laugh defiantly at the solstitial rays, beneath
which every other laborer would melt. See him
furrow the billowy brine for millions of miles, and
interchange the growth of different zones. He
spans the sea with bridges. He enters the factory,
and seizing its central crank, he plies its complicated machinery with inconceivable velocity and
power. He weaves our garments and carves our
furniture. He multiplies our thoughts in books
and newspapers, and impels them through the
world. He bores his way through rock and mountains, and leaves an avenue for the flow of commerce. He grinds the grain of continents, and
carries it to meet the necessities of man. He
clenches the tough quartz, and crushing it in his
iron fist, compels it to surrender the golden treasures it so tightly held. He ;lifts and excavates:
he flames, and saws and hammers, and yet with
infinite and etherial delicacy, he points the finest
needle, and draws the metalic threads. No labor
is too undignified for him to perform—no task loo
heavy for him to accomplish. Ho delights iu
noise, and dirt, and soot, and smoke, He is not
afraid of his dainty fingers, Wherever work is to
be done there is his home. Whenever a ilillieuU
job is placed before him, his iron muscles fairly
thrill with joy. See how, iu the few years of at*
wonderful activity, whole forests have gone down
liis throat, leaves, and boughs, and mighty trunks.
And who shall say that this laborious Titan has
yet fully got himself in harness?
QOOD A1)VK.:k.
Because you flourish in worldly affairs,
Don't be haughty and put on airs,
With insolent pride of station!
Don't be proud and turn up your nose
At poorer people, in plainer clothes.

Now Mat bad a special antipathy for cnK and
never let pass an opportunity to kill one. This lie
resolved to do in the present cose, and instantly
formed a plan fur the purpose, P,-*iveiving but,
one mode of egress for the- animal, ho says to Bid-
dy-
" Have yez iver a male bag in the house,
darlint ?"
"Divil a one is tbere, Mat Tun tuk it to the
mill wid yez to bring home chips wid. this morn-

" Faix, an' I did, and there it is yit, thin. Well,

"Troth,'an' I have, Mat; there's me Sunday

"Biddy, darlint, yez a jewel to be thinkiu' 0

Biddy brought the garment, and wlten the
strings were drawn close it made a very good substitute for the meal bag, and Mat declared it w
" illegant."
So holding it close against the edge of tlie
chest, he took a look behind and saw a pair of
bright eyes glaring at hini.
"An'is it there ye are, ye divil? Be out o'that

"Yis, l'vo a pllnty, Mat; the tay kettle's full

'■'Hould 'im close, Mat; hero goes tho wather."
Dash went the wafer, and out jumped the animal
into Mat's trap.
"Arrah, be the howl; pofcer, I have 'im in,
Biddy," says Mat, drawing :.dose the folds of tbe
garmen*; '*now, bad cess to yez, ye thafe. it's

Hat threw tlie bundle over his shoulder, and
told Biddy to play " St. Patrick's day in the morning" on it. Biddy struck about three notes of that
populaf Irish air, and suddenly stopped, exclaiming—
"What smllfe so quare, Mat? It's taki-s' me

"HowlySt. Father', says Mat, throwing down

Mat drew her out doors and then broke tor the
pump like a quarter horse, closely followed by
Biddy.
" Shore, tbat little villain bates tbe divil Intirely; he's ruined me house, an* kilt Biddy, an' put
me out o' consate wid oneself for a month to come.
Och, tbe desaivin' vagahone. bad luck to 'lm,"and
Mat; plunged his head into the norae-trough op to
his shoulders.
"Get out o-' that, Mat, I'm nan ly blind,' and
Biddy went under water. "Ooh, the mortberfn1

Mat and Biddy went cautiously back to the cabin, from which the offensive quadruped had taken
his departure. Things were turned out o' Seers,
Biddy's petticoat buried, the bed, which fortunately ■soaped, moved to a near neighbor's, the stove
moved outside, and for a we'd*: they kept house
