The Atlantic T-.lcgri.pl_..
The Directors of the Atlantic Telegraph Company have published a card, in which tliey say :—
That a serious fault exists in the cable at some
point between 200 and 300 miles from Valentia,
can.tot bo doubted; but as Mr. Whitebou.e had
established no means of concerted action betweeu
the Valentia and Newfoundland stations in case of
difiieuUy, it is not altogether possible to ay wheth-
tire embarrassment ariado imm the funk
referred to.
They bave, therefore, . ent out with full instructions one ol the staff, and they are encouraged to
hope that some communication may possibly yet
be established through the cable ior a time, even
in its present state, and that as soon as tho weathet
and other circumstances are such as to encouragt
the making an attempt with some chance of success to raise and repair the injured part, it is not
beyond probability that the existing cabl
be rendered permanently useful.
Tbis legitimate result has been postponed by
adverse circumstances ; but the Directors, in spite
of this piece of evil fortune, cannot remember otherwise than with an honorable feeling of pride and
satisfaction, th(U the primary and ruling motive
which actuated them and their brother shareholders in entering upon the first epoch of this great
work, waa not altogether of a sordid or mercenary
character, and that one at least of the great objects of the subscribers has been fully successful.
The Loudoa correspondent of ihe New York
Herald, writing Sept. 24th, Bays:
The results ofthe experiments wbich have been
no doubt very ably conducted at Valentia, within
the last few days, if they are not of a conclusive
nature, must at least be suggestive of very grave
considerations to tbe minds of men of science
Whether the press of tbe United States has, ae the
Times alleges, neglected the claims of Mr. now
Sir Charles Bright, or whether that powerful organ of opinion has not itself condescended to mire
than one littleness iu reference to the share which
America and her chosen sons have had in direct
connexion with the great exploit, of which the 5th
of August saw the consummation, it is now scarcely worth while to inquire. The opp3,rtunity is
now afforded to all the distinguished men of science lately engaged, instead of coutestin

republic.
Senor Villasano leaves here tomorrow for Guay
mas, it is supposed on a private mission, and it is
supposed that tho ports of Souora and Lower California will be thrown open for the admi.siou ol
goods from San Francisco, free of duty. More
anon. There is a prospect in the future.
The Bilver mines in the country are being worked more systematically than heretofore, and two
large clippers are daily expected to take in cargoes
oro, hides, Brazil wood and silver for Europe. The
great difficulty in working mines of silver is lhe
want of capital ; the mines requiring a large capital to work them tu advantage. A Bluice has
been started in Ihe wet diggings for gold. Se far
we have not heard the result.
The rains have been later than usual, but much
more abundant, and the much dreaded temporal
or storm did not pay us a visit.
Pasture ie good, sugar crop excellent, and corn

As it may prove Bomewhat of interest to dea1
more in particulars about lhe uprising ofthe people, 1 will say that it was no more than Ihe fanners, merchants, soldier, and sailors, rose ev »iasse,
and proceeded to La Paz, to the number of ahout
five hundred. The Governor quietly resigned ;
he was sent wilh his soldiers to Pinchelinga, and
will embark for Maz_.lh.ii in a few days; the
rancheros quietly returning to their homes. La

180 men, the companies not being fail. Col. Nau-
man is in command of this post, and tho appearance
of things in general gave evidence of great cleanliness and efficiency. The thermomct<*r at the Fort,
at mid-day on 29th Oetober, waa 80 deg Fahrenheit ; and this morning, at 7 o'clock, it had fallen
to 60. The cold this morning was sensibly felt by
us all, and my sensations were similar to those experienced on the river bottoms of the JIissij_sippi at
this season ofthe year.
Fort Yuma is placed on the north Fide of tbe Colorado, at the junction of this stream with the Gila.
It is located on a hill or bluff, some sixty feet above
the river, the bill being denuded by the high waters
that take place in the months of June and July. The
site chosen is very commanding and conspicuous.
The course of the Colorado river at tbis point is
east and west. The color of the water is of a dark
brownish red, with a swift current and smooth sur
face. There are many whirlpools in tha centre of
the stream, and it is considered difficult lo swim out
of the eddies when once fairly within their whirl.
The banks, or rather the bottom land of the strean
h. merely a deposit of light debris, of the finest dus
or sand washed up when the river is high, and left
as sediment when it falls. Tho most prominent
mountain peaks in view are Pilot Knob and Chimney
Peak—both very beautifully pointed towards the
sky. Standing out in bold relief against the horizon, they present a pietur._a.iiie aspect with
ing outlines.
The river abounds in a species of fish known ns
the buffalo fish. They havo large fiat heads with
round and long bodies. I caught several over a
foot in length, and they proved fine caling. Quail
is abundant along the river bankB ; and scorpions,
tarantuIuB. centipedes and rattlesnakes are said to
further be numberless during the summer season. There
