Littlt, ot First, but flllglity A Lout.
BT CHARi,i-:a HifiXSX
A traveller through a dusty road
Strewed acorn-j ou the lea,
And one took root and sproutcdJp, '
And grew into a tree.
Lore sought its shade at evenin; time,
To breathe its early vows,
And Age was pleased En heataif noon,.
To bask beneath its bougha
The dormouse loved its dauglng twigs.
The birds aweet music here
It stood a glory in its place,
A blessing evermore!
A little wpring bad lost its wy
Among the grass and fern .
A passing stranger scooped awell,
Where weary men might tiru.
He walled it in, and hung wth care
A ladle at tbo briuk—
He thought not of tho decdhe did,
But judged that toil mvjht drink.
He passed again—and li ! the well,
By summers never fried,
Had cooled ten thousfod parebJng tongnes,
And sared a life leside!
A dreamer droppid a random thought;
'Twas old, aid yet 'twas new—
A Simple fancy cf the brain,
But strong inoeing true j
It shone upon * genial mind,
And lo ! its light became
A lamp of Jife. a beacon ray,
A monitory flame.
The thought was small—its issue great;
A watch firo on the hill,
It shed its radiance far adown,
Aod cheer* the valley still 1
A nameless man amid a crowd
That thronged the daily mart,
Let fall the word of hope and love,
Unstudied from the heart *m
A whisper oo the tumult thrown—
A transitory br^atL—
It rtised a brother from the dust,
It saved a soul from death '.
O germ ! 0 fount! 0 word of love!
0 thought at random cast!
Ye were but little at the first,
But mighty at the last.

A friend told us a atory a few days hiiicc, illustrating thu free, generous character of tiie liish
which we consider too good to be lost, and therefore give it to our readers.
Our friend'a wife being in delicate health, it was
resolved that a girl should be procured to do the
koase worlc, that the lady might have au opportunity to recover her health and spirits.
After visiting aa intelligence olficc for two or
tliree morniuga, a Que buxom lass of about twenty
years of age, but six. months from sweet Ireland, j
waa selected and instructed as to the duties that
would be expected of her.
''Now, then," says the lady, "pour the ground
coffee into tho pot, then pour in the hot water, aad
after a few mluutea' hulling, put in one half oi an
egg," tho lady Illustrating each description by
demonstration. " You understand, don't you ?'-'
■ays the lady.
" Indado I do, mum," was the response, ** Bile
ihe coffee, grind in the wather, and dhrop in the
half of an egg. Isn't that it, mum?''
11 All right," replied the lady. « Now, then, tomorrow morning we'll see how well you remember it."
To-morrow morning came, and the coffee was ns
good as could ba expected. The third morning
came, and to the astonishment of our friend and
wife, the coffee was undrinkable and nauseating ;
even the odor of it was sickening, Bridget was
called, and questioned a3 follows :
" Bridget, did you first put the ground coffee in
the pot V
"Iudade, I did, mam."
" Did you then pour iu the hot water V}
" Sure I did."
"How long did you let it boil ?"
"Five minutes, mum."
" What did you do then V
''I put in the egg, mum."
" Just as I sho\wd you the other morning ?"
"Well, to tell the truth, mum," says Bridget,
giving her garments a hitch with her brawny
hands, "to tell ye the truth, I would not put in
the half of the egg, as yo told me, but the e?;g was
a bad one, aud I thougAt ye wouldn't mind about
kaping the half of it. and so I dhropped in the
critter as it was."
