The Garden of K .lei..
The true site of the first abode of man, the Garden of Eden, mentioned in Genesis ii. 8, has been
the subject of almost endless discussion among the
learned. The original word, "Gan Eden," properly signifies an enclosure, from a root denoting
protection. The Septuagint renders it -Paradei-
os,'' Paradise, a term of Arabic or Persian origin ;
at least, neitlu-r Hebrew, Chaldaic or Greek. Paradise denotes a park, a pleasure garden, a woodland enclosure, surrounded with a wall, watered
with running rivers, and with an abundance of
fruit, flowers, and other objects to regale the
senses.
Thus we find Xenoption's description : the King
of Persia is particularly carefut iu the selection
wherever he wishes to locate gardens or enclosures,
which are called Paradises; they are filled with
everything beautiful and good that can be procured
The term at length, by constant use, became applied to any fertile or delightful region, and was
also introduced into the later and Rabbinical Hebrew, forming the word P.R.DS. (Neh. ii. 8.) From
this signification of everything that is beautiful in
scenery, and as the house of our first parents, in
their state of innocence aud bliss, it was applied
to the metaphorical appellation of heaven, tlie
home ol ihe blessed.
The expression oftlie Hebrew. EON, is pleasure,
intimating the superb r beauty of the region
known by that name. It may, we think, be safely
assumed tiiat the name of Eden designates a place
or region which was so termed at the time of Moses, rather than at the time of its occupation by
its first happy tenants; for wtiy should it then
have been distinguished by any name whatsoever.
Geographical distinctions naturally arise only
fiom the settlement of the grove, but cannot be
well conceived as existing prior to . ucli a period.
Tbat the name was given by God himself, we can
find no suflicient authority. The same remark
may be made of the rivers and other places mentioned in this connection. They are doubtless to
be considered as post-deluvian names. The site
of Eden, therefore, is to be determined by defining
as far as possible, tho respective positions of the
adjacent streams and regions.— Voice of Israel.

Singular Bott..__ Stories.—Capt. Beechcr, editor ofthe English Nautical Magazine, has compiled within the last ten years, the following curious
voyages ot bottles thrown into the sea by unfortunate navigators.
A good many bottles thrown into the sea next
to the African coast, found their way to Europe.
The bottle seems to have anticipated the Austral
Panama route, having traveled from the Panama
Isthmus to the Irish coast. Another crossed the
Atlantic from the Canaries to Nova Scotia. Three
or four bottles, thrown into the sea by Greenland
mariners on Davis's Straits, landed on the northwest coast of Ireland. Another one made a very
curious trip ;'it swam from the South Atlantic
Ocean to the west coast of Africa, passed Gibraltar, went along the Portuguese of France, passing
Brest, aud was finally picked up on Jersey Island ;
ihe direct line touches at least all these places,
aud makes it more than, probable that it took this
route. One bottle was found after sixteen years
swimming ; one after fourteen, and two after t*.n
years. A few only traveled more than one year,
and one only five days. This last was sent off by
the captain ofthe Racehorse, on the 17th of April,
in the Caribbean Sea, and was fouud ou the 22d.
after having gone through three degrees of longitude in a western direction. Capt. M'CIure of the
Investigator, well known since his discovery of
the northwest strait, threw a bottle into the sea in
1750 on his way to Behriug's Strait. It ewam
3.600 miles in 206 days, and was picked up on the
Honduras coast. A work like that of Capt. Beech-
er's cannot fail to throw some light on the different observations of the current of the sea.
CHno\-oi.oar of Ambkican Literati;he,—In 103(i
the firi-t book was printed in New England. Not
till 170i was there a paper published. The News
Letter was then started and continued for 72 years,
until after the commencement of the revolution ;
the Boston Gazette was next published, and the
third was the Couraut, by the elder brother of
Ben. Franklin. The first paper printed in New
York wan in 1725; in Philadelphia, 1719. And
now, by the last census of New York, not less than
424 papers are published, aud 2800 in the Union,
with an average circulation of 1725. In 1732,
Ben. Franklin began hisl'oor Richard's Almanac.
The first- tragedy written in America was by Benjamin Coleman, a student at Harvard, and there
acted on commencement day. It was entitled
"Gustnvus Vasa," Coleman was settled afterwards in Boston, and was nn eloquent nnd altcc-
lionate minister. In the hundred sermons he printed, are historical aud biographical facts of value
to the historian.
Prices op Wine and Beef.—Ttie butchers' shops
says the author of -'England in the Times of Shakspeare," astonish us by their prices : A fat ox, 26s ;
a fat wether, 3s 4d; and the same price for a fat
calf; a fat Iamb, 12d; three pounds of beef a penny.
Everywhere the same cheapness. Milk from it farm
in the Minoiies, the three ale pints, Hd in summer
aud 2id In winter. Wine, too, is very cheap, and
within the reach of any poor man, though not quite
so much so as in Henry the Eighth's time, when, by
statute. Gascon wine was sold at Ss the. gallon, end
the cheapest at Id a pint, and 4d the bottle. Malmsey and sack at 6d the gallon. [It would be well to
bear in mind, however, that in the time of Henry
VIII. a penny was equal to a shilling of the present
time.]
Silence is an antidote against a slanderous
tongne.
Charter Oak.—The interest felt all over onr
country, in the old Charter Oak of Connecticut.
is evinced in ttie fact that the fame morning the
tree fell, there were applications to Mr. Stuart,
from residents of Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Mis
siasippi, (the President of Jefferson College in lhat
State.) Minnesota, (for the Historical Society hi
that Territory.) for fragments of the tree to be
preserved as sacred relics. One mau applied for
piece for a cabinet of Natural History in San
Francisco, and fbr a cane for Rev, Horace Bush-
netl of that State. Both of his requests were com
plied with. It was estimated that a cord and a
half of wood was carried off the morning the tree
fell. Mr. Stuart, however, provided watchmen to
see that undue liberties were not taken ; and he
had a guard about the tree all night. The fate of
this tree will be commemorated centuries hereafter. Old men bowed with age, begged a sprig in
commemoration. They had heard the story of the
tree in their childhood, and were saddened at
fall i3i their old age.— Hart   Couranl.
Ax Incident in the War of 1812.—In the memorable battle of Lundy's Lane, on the 25th of July,
1814, Col. Jessup was detached to act on theft-inks
of the British army. The contest raged foralontj
time, and Jessup and his corps were supposed to
be captured ; but at a critical moment the army
was cheered by his return with many prisoners,
among whom was Maj. Gen. Sher-fle. In his beautiful report to the War Department, Gen. Brown
said, "Jessup re-appeared to the American army
in a blaze of glory.7'
Roger Sherman,—Mr. Sherman was representative in Congress from Connecticut; his business
bad been that of making shoes. John Randolph,
who had Indian blood in him, rose, and, with his
usual squeaking sounds, said : " I should like to
know what the gentleman did with his leather
apron before he set out for Washington." Mr.
Sherman replied, imitating the same equoak : "I
cut it up, sir, to make moccasins fbr the descendants of Pocahontas.7'
A Goon One.—While S.gno'r Blitz was in Cin
cinnati, one evening he had a bright little fellow
on the stand to assist him  in his " experiments."
"Bub," said the Signor, ''do you think I could
put the twenty ten cent pieces which that lady
holds in her hand into your coat pocket?''
" No," said the boy confidently.
"Think not?"
"I know you couldn't" said the little fellow,
with great firmness.
'■Why not?"
" Cause the pockets are all out."

CoMrLiMENTARr.—It is related that once upon a
time, in ttie couise of the trial of a case, in Dublin, ttie Court interrupted Outran En the midst of
his speech, when an as began to br_.y under the
window,saying '-one at a titne, Mr. Curran, if yon
please." Presently the Judge began his charge
to the jury, and the ass beiran to bray again, aud
Mr. Curran remarked, " Does not your Lordship
hear a remarkable echo in the court ?"
Philosophers say that shutting the eyes makes
the sense oi hearing more acute. This may account for the many closed eyes that are seen in
our churches.
Five Words in Season.—About two centuries
aud a half ago, the Legislature of .Scotland enact
ed that " a good and sufficient school," shall be
erected and maintained in every parish. To these
five words, " a good and sufficient school," introduced into an act ol Parliament, not larger than a
man's thumb, is Scotland indebted at this day tor
nearly every solid glory she possesses.

Purdy, we have been furnished with the following important intelligence^ from New York, conveyed in a letter lo him d.ited on the morning of
the steamer's sailing. It wm currently reported,
that Vanderbilt and Garrison had come to Home
arrangment by which they should, in future, conduct the Nicaragua Route jointly- Thin of eoun.ii
would remove all dissensions between the gentlemen, and place Walker permanently at the ht%<\
o.' the Nicaraguai. government; for it in well
known, that the only foe he has to contend againit
is Commodore Vanderbilt. We are very much inclined tobelieye the truth of this romor, as --compromise between the gentlemen must certainly ba
more beneficial to their mutual interest* than a
long nnd deadly struggle, which can only remit
in great pecuniary loss to both, without any adequate compensation.— San Franeiico Herald.

Reward Ofkkred.— Judge Barbour, of the District Court of Yuba county, olfern $250 reward for
the apprehension and delivery to th.. Sherifl1 of
Yuba county, at Marysville, of one Domingo Quin-
sei. an Italian, who escaped from the Yuba jail, on
the night of the 7th, having been convicted of
murder, and under sentence of death.
Railways FROM the South.—The Vicksburgb,
Shreveport and Texas Railroad, from the Mi-mii.-
sippi to Monroe, 74- miles, to Shreveport, 171
miles, and to the State line of Texas, where il
meets the Southern Pacific read, 189 miles, in Id
the hands ot energetic contractors, »_» hnve th _-
first 3't miles completed, anil are laying down tha
iron superstructure. It is estimated that withia
four years the Pacific road will be completed to*
ihe Trinity, in Texas and the Louisiana road to-
State line, making a distance o-C nearly 400 milen.
The Congressional land grant to the roadr
amounts to 420,924 acres, and most of it Is the
Qnest land in the State.
