One Hu_.mU.o_1 Years Hence.
Who'll throng -the streets in eager haste
One hundred year* from now,
And Mammon's fleeting phantom chase
With, eare-worn, anxious brow ;
To gain a name
. For wealth, or fame—
Ambition's goal,
Os houor's-croll—
Who will be that spell-bound throng,.
Passing with hasty steps along,
One hundred yeaw from now ?
Where, 0 ! where wil be the men..
Oue hundred:years, from uow?
Who uow Uie virtuous poor condemn
With.purse-proud,.haughty brow.;.
Who give tho sneer
To Misery's tear,
Withhold relief
To'orphau's gvief..
Where, 0.. where will be their/pride,,
When rich ;ind poor lie side by side,
One hundred years from now.
Who'll grace onr courts as judges grave,.
One hundred years from now?
Nor warp the law, nor sereen the knave,.
When wealth Mid afiiuence bow;.
When bribes of gold,
And crimes untold;.
Make justice sleep
And mercy weep;
Who* will be those jurists-pure,
And bribes aud sycophants abjuro,.
One hundred year.*, faoiu now?
Who'll guide ou? rights »'cr land andi-ca,.
One hundred years from now;
Stand by the banner of the free,
And dare confront a foe ;;
And never yield"
O'er flood and field
And do no wrong—
Submit to-none*
Who will be those patriots brave,
To guard our flag o'er land or wave,
One hundred years from now?
Where, where wilVthe-proud despots be-.
One hundred years from now,
Who'd crush the germ of Liberty.
And make the nations bow ?
They'll be forgot,
Their names will rot,
No nations feet
Their iron heel;;
And the fair goddess, Liberty,
Will reign o'er every lam. aud sea,
One hundred-years from now.

"Where the sea-shells touch my wheels ;
Through the desert land with a howl I sweep,
And the yellow harvest fields.
I speed through the city's b\isy streets,
Where the thronging crowds arc found,
And they fly at the sound of my iron feet,
Like a hare from the baying hound.
I traverse the regions of burning heat,
The Equator hears my scream ;
And I break the silence of winter's retreat,
Where the glittering snow-fields gleam.
The wild beasts fly when my voice they hear
Through the sounding forests ring,
And the sons of men stand mute with £.ar—

Thackeray says, a woman's heart is just like a
lithographer's stone—what is once written upon it
can't be rubbed out. This is so. Let an heiress
once fix her affections on a stable boy, and all the
preaching in the world can't get her beart above oat
boxes and curry combs. "What is written on her
heart can't be rubbed out." This fact shows itself,
not only in love but in religion. Men change their
gods a dozen times—a woman, never. To convert
a Sister of Charity to Methodism, would require a
greater amount of power than you would have to
overturn tbe Pyramids.

It is refreshing to find upon tbe tombstone of departed worth, Such delicate sentiments of profound
respect as are embodied in the following lines, cut
upon a very ancient tombstone :—■
" Here lies Mayor Parker,
Whom tbe Lord saw fit to slaughter-
He died without any fears,
Was buried without any tears,
And where he's gone and how he fares,
Nobody knows and nobody cares."
Gentility is neither in birth, wealth, manners nor
fashion—but in tbe mind. A high sense of honor,
a determination never to take a mean advantage of
another, an adherence to truth, delicacy aod politeness toward those with whom wc have dealings, are
its essential characteristics.
It was a good reply of Plato, to one who murmured at his reproving him for a small matter :—" Custom," says he, " is no small matter. A custom or
habit of life does frequently alter the natural inclination either to good or evil."
Perhaps no man regrets any hardships he has ever
endured, when he is once completely delivered from
them.
The time of an editor is ten times more valuable
at some times than at otiters. But few of the public know it.
In feeding with corn, sixty pounds of ground goes

There is one good wife in the country and every

Be contented and thankful; a cheerful spirit
makes labor light, sleep sweet, all around cheerful.

most useful.
Begin life with but little show—you may increase
it afterwards.
Depend not upon fortune but conduct.
He is but a worthless fellow who lives only to

As we must render an account of every idle word;*
so must we also of our idle silence.
He that knows useful things, and not he that
knows many things, is the wise man.
One might as well be out ofthe world, as beloved

Lean liberty is better than fat slavery.
Correction does much, but encouragement does
more. Encouragement after censure is as the sun

If we did but know how little some enjoy the
great things they possess, there would not be

A vain man can never be altogether rude. Desirous as he is of pleasing, he fashions his manners
alter those of others.
A good moral character is the first essential in
man. It is, therefore, highly important to endeavor not only to be learned but to be virtuous.
Forget injuries and remember benefits. If you

God, ia of our fellow-creatures, and both alike
draw breath from thii; ''bright and breathing
world." We must not forsake the world, even
though it should have bee darkened by the sins
of ourselves and of others ; birds of calm are often
seen in storm ; the primrose smiles on the brow of
the windiest hill, nor cares for sleet or snow ; and
hath not a Christian soul the same power to preserve itself from scathe wliich has beeu given to
insensate and inanimate beings? And then what
sort of a world is to be substituted for the one wo
are wickedly bid to abandon? A dark, narrow
World, indeed. Ye., narrow as it is, haunted .by
thought that can, aud too often do, debase and
terrify into idiotcy or madness. For nature thwarted, must dwindle into decay or distortion ; the
very shape of tlio eoul becomes deformed, its lineaments ghastly as with premature age ; the spring
isstruck out of life ; the gracious law of her seasons is disobeyed ; and on the tree of knowledge
we are to look for fruits before blossoms! Bad
philosophy and worse religion. Commend us to
sueh Christianity as Mr. Bowles preaches so eloquently in this poem. To use his own words, no
priest is he
-■' Who deems tiie Almighty frowns upon his throne,.
Because two pair ofharmtess dowagers,
Whose life has lapsed without a stain, beguile
An evening hour with cards; who deems that Hell
Burns fiercer for a sarsaband."
We dare say Mr. Bowles, like ourselves, has
long given up dancing ; and that though he mny
occasionally join in a rubber of whist for sixpenny-
points, hi is, like ourselves, no very assiduoiin
card player. T'other evening we laid aside our
crutch, aud tried, not unsuccessfully to stand up
in a quadrille, rather than that fifteen young people should be disappointed of their dos-a-dos, and
we acquitted ourselves like a Lancer. Same evening we faced an old lady at whist, and, with -the
exception of a single revoke, which had like to
bring down an old home about our ears, we played to the delight of Hoyle's ghost, who kept looking all the while over our shoulder, pointing to
each victorious card in our irrcs is table hand.—

FitANKLiN's Son.—The inauguration of the
Franklin statute at Boston, has beer the occasion
for reviving an incident connected with the life
of the philosopher. His only son, William, wan
Governor of New Jersey at the time of the Declaration of Independence, aud did what he could
to prevent the Legislative Assembly of New Jersey from sanctioning the proceedings of the General Congress of Philadelphia. These etTorts,
however, did but little to stay the tide of popular
sentiment iu favor of resistance to tyranny, aud
soon involved him in difficulty. He was deposed
from his office by the Whigs, to give place to
William Livingston, and sent prisoner to Connecticut, where he remained about two years in East
Windsor, in the house of Capt. Ebenezer Grant,
near where the Theological Seminary now stands.
In 1788 he was exchanged, and soon after went to
England. There be spent the remainder of his
life, receiving a pension from the British government for the losses he had sustained by bis fidelity.
He died in 1813, at the age of 82: The opposition
ofthe son to the cause the father had espoused,
produced an estrangement between them, and in
Franklin's will, speaking of hia eon, he says:
•-The part he acted against me in the late war,
which is of public notoriety, will accou t tor my
not leaving him no more of an estate lie endeavored to deprive me of."—Philadelphia Ledger.
Berkely, in his ■■Utopia," describes lovers na
declaring their passion by presenting to the tair
beloved a rosebud, just beginning to opeu ; if tha
lady accepted aud wore the bud. she was supposed
to favor his pretensions. As time increased tho
lover's affections, he followed up the first present
by that of a half-blown rose, which wns again succeeded by one full blown ; and if the lady wora
this last, she waa considered as engaged lor life.
The character of the young men of a community
depends much on that of the young women. If
tlie latter are cultivated, intelligent, and accomplished, the young men will feel the requirement
that they themselves should be upright, gentlemanly nnd refined ; but if iheir Iriends are frivolous and silly, tli. young men will he louud disi-
pated and worthless.
