PARTING WOEDS,
Forget KOT tittMother I she cherished thy youth:
And loved thee with tenderness, fervor and truth;
She led thy weak footsteps with caution and care,
Aud taught thee to lisp forth thy first morning;
prayer.
Forget not thy Mother! Bad vigils she kept,
And knelt by thy bed-side to pray whilst thou slept:
When sickness and pain set their stamps on thy
brow,
And robb'd thy young face of Its bright healthful glow.
Forgot not thy Mother! whan far, fir away,
She thotljrht of her first-born by night and by day;
How her heart clung to thee ib.ro' the lapse of long
years,
When hope sweetly baam'd 'mid bar bitterest tears.
Forget not thy Mother! condemn not her deeds,
Let her heart be to thee a green soot free irom
weeds ;
Magnify her true virtues, ber frailties still hide,
And be ihou the lost one to doubt or deride.
Forget not thy Mother! thy love should e'er be.
Like ocean's broad billows unshackled and free ;
Io life's busy mom tuts, OF death's darker hour,
Let thoughts of that mother all other o'erpower.
Forget not thy Mother! unkinrlnoss cuts deep—
A wound made by thee too long Q\-on wouid tCOOp;
And remorse, tho' she haateu'd her balm drops to
pour,
Could but half heal tbe bosom all saddened and
sore.
Be hind to thy .Mother .' let pontic word; fall,
Ingratitude sends forth its worm.vooit anil ^all ;
Bit love blent with duty, ''ieh blessing impart,
And gilds each recess of tbe desolate heart.

that we soaked some of our wheat in simple water
and then dried it in lime, and it destroyed the
smut equally as well as when pickle was used.
Yours, truly, Id). S. JARVIS."
In addition to the above, we present, says the
Farmer, tiie annexed remedy, which has been ap- j
proved by tiiousands that have tried it:
For every four bushels of wheat dissolve one .
pound blue vitriol in water sufficient to cover the'
wheat, and properly soak it; let it remain twenty I
or twenty-four hours in the liquid, and plant immediately when taken out. Tiie same process
should be adopted annually, and the result of each
year will secure faith to continue the same process perpetually.
We bone our farmers will adopt this plan, or
the fir3t named, or try both—and give their results to the public. It is to be hoped, that in
connection with the subject ot smut, our fanners
Will adopt some method Of recording their experiments of every kind, and also their time and
manner of planting : also their systems ol plowing and planting, the depth of the soil turned,
quantity of seed per aero, kind of seed, when
planted, etc , raid make the results known.

Tuta suhjoct In One Of vital importance to the
grain growers in Ciitifoniia. nnd aa the evil which
has ouiiejl m muoh loss, and so loud complaint',
ii one that can be easily remedied, if tlio-e wlio
are much interested will takfl the necessary step;
to acco'nplish It, we anil their atiaotlon to tiff
following as matters of moment, and asi; th"
kindly co operation of all our grain growers to
the subject. Tlie frequent toq lirics that are made
of ti1), says the California Eirm-r. upon the sub
jeet of Smutty Wheat, Induces as to lay before
o;ir reader.-* the following article, win h we published in Match last. We re-pabish it. as tbe
■eason approaches for the planting of grain—tin1
remedy is simple ana ea^y, and we have faith in
it, and coming from a reliable sjurce, is worthy
the confidence of the public.
"In the Atlantic States in 1S0G, I sowed wheat
(spring wheat, forat that time we raised no ot!iF*r). I
The seed was obtained from a neighbor. It ww*\
eoaked in beef pickle, made of salt and water, with j
a certain portion of saltpetre (nitre) twenty four |
hours. It was then drained dry and afterwards
finished drying with slaked lime. The quantity
Boaked was not snfteieiit to sow the piece of ground,
and being pressed for time, a part of it was1 sowed
wilh unsoakedand unlimed wheat from the same
lot. The whole of the wheat raised from that
■ )akal wittf pickle and dried with lime was perfectly free from smut, whilst that sown dry or
without pickling and liming was nearly worthless
from smut, and our neighbors raised from'the
■ame seed, also sowed without soaking or liming,
wheat not lit to eat. This was, I think, before
the publication ol'Sinclair's work, and was done
from the belief that soaking in pickle prevented
imut. The lime waa used merely to render the
grain dry enough to sow. If Sinclair's work bad
b^en published, it had not at least made its ap-
r^arance En that part of our country. The next
year our need wheat was prepared in the same
manner, nnd with me name success. In 1808, not
having lime, we dried our wheat (after soaking it
»• usual) iu ashes, and the crop proved to be a
little smutty, which led us tn supose that it might
be the lime that prevented smut, and wo continued preparing our wbeat by Beaklug in pickle 'and
drying with lime till ISIS, always having a per
fectly clean crop. In that year I soaked the s.ojiI
as usual, but wet weather coming on directly alter tho pickle had been turned off, and fearing
t IS seed might be spoiled if left in this Condition,
I partially dried it with ground gypsum (plaster
of Paris) and when, the ground was dry enough to
■ow, my grain had become too dry to use lime, and
f> jortion of it was sowed without liming. Tlie
plastered grain produced a very large crop. (Ihe
largest I ever knew in that part ofthe country.)
but it was slightly smutty That dried with lime
hadnosmut. From ISIS to 1850 I continued to
raise wheat, and always pickled aud dried with
• lime, and never had any more smut.
'■So much for smut. In 13.52 I saw on the
edge of my barley Seld a plant of wheat that
was a coTue-by-ch nice. It was so very line that
I secured it, by putting stakes round it, iu order
to ascertain what it might prove. In the fall,
when ripe, I pulled it up. and found it proceeded
from only one kernel. The produce was half a
pint, or a little less, and weighed a little short
of half a pound. I sowed it in 1861, io drills
ani its yield was sixty pounds, although I lost
nome by the fowls. 1 have now sowed the sixty
pounds ivroadcast, and what the yield maybe I
will let you know in the fall. Tbe quality of tho
wheat, judging from appearance, is the finest I
bave ever seen ; the berry is large, full, and very
light colored. In glancing orer what I have
written. I perceive that I have omitted to mention

FROM P.1XAMA TO SAN FRANCISCO,
It was a happy dfl}1 when we emlmrke;! on t.lio
spacious "John [-. yicpiicn?:" for we now k\i that
all cure was past. No more changes—no more
Imaginary fevers; we bad left belli ml us all sorts
of diminutives, from copper cents to steamboats.—
Here were acres of deck-room, gentlemanly officers
and servants, ami storerooms abundantly supplied
with provisions. And as the oritur was given to
weigh anchor, we resigned ourselves to clean'
sheets with much pleasure after the heat ami
fatigues of the Isthmus transit.
The morning found us .still travelling South)
and nearing Point Mala, which we douhlcil in tin.'
course of the day and took our course northerly.
The air was warm aud the heavens of glistening
brilliancy day aud night— the atmosphere transparent, and the sunsets equal in splendor to those
of New England in summer. We were now in
low latitudes, and the northern stars, familiar from
infancy, had progressively sunk, and finally disappeared below the horizon, wliile an unknown firmament, in which the magnificent constellation of
tiie Southern Cross shone conspicuously, had unfolded itself, audits scattered ziel.iuhe rivalled in
splendor the milky way.
The island of Quibo, 230 miles from Pannma,-
lay iu our course this day- the plaoe where the"
unfortunate Yankee Blade got out of coal and pat
in for wood, that her Captain, R 11, as it was
afterwards reported, might win a bet against his
own ship. He procured some forty cords of green
wood, with whieh he reached Panama some thirty
hours behind his competitor. It was considered a
grand " Mississippi dodge," and greatly enraged
the passengers; but the bet, if made, was won.
After passing these islands we saw land but at
intervals, and dimly, till we crossed the Gulfed
Tehauntcpcc—a bay of fogs, waterspouts, thunder
storms, chopping seas and stormy trades. From;
l-'oint Sacrificios the coast was clear, aad when the
sun or wind would dissolve the vapor that hunir
around, wc had a grand view of the tall summits
in the interior of Mexico,
Among the officer?, the first, TVcstfall, was a moa
accomplished old salt. So was, indeed, without
rival in that particular accomplishment in which
skippers take most pride—blunt incivility. Tho'
kim'.-iiearted, and attentive to tlie comforts of the
passengers, no one ever received from him a direct
reply to any question. He would use many more
words in an evasion than tlie answer required. One
day he was asked, " How far is it to .Acannleo'.'•'•'
He growled out, " How the h— should I know!—
[fa as much as .1" ean eta to reckon the eHstntrte w*
have run.'-' The man meekly said, " I didn't know
but you could give ah idea.'' A'.'tftn he growled,
'■ The Company don't pay rae in Ideas—I work by
the mouth." All mutinous children were instsuit'y
quelled at the sonnd of Ids voice. He delighted
in finding delinquents, and1 in exercising the autocratical powers his position confeurcd upon him.
He confessed himself a perfect police department,
and no man could escape his vigilance. He was
greatly enraged one day to -find that a steerage
passenger had been "ringing in" nt the cabin
table?, and by his impudence had enjoyed a week
of superior board? The poor fellow discovered
himself by complaining to the Captain of inattention on tire part of the waiters. An investigation
was had, but impudence no longer served him. He
was put in Irons, and kept in the hot baggage room
three days on bread aud water, supplied by the
lirst officer himself.
One night after supper, and when the whole
company had paired oil' for quiet converse, a sud-
deu.cry, " Man overboard," was heard in the bows
and came rushing all along the duck aft. A general fright seized the ladies; some screamed, and
Others were unable to scream—but there was a
clinging to partners, and an anxious inquiry, "who
is it2" " who is gone ?" A man from the steerage
came along, and, in reply to the question, said,
" His name is Smith—Iie;s my lather, and two on
us coukl't hold tbf; d— fool. He was stark crazy
to jump overboard; but they won't get him, for he
Went under the wheel." The ship was stopped and
the boats lowered—but the search was vain. Mr.
Smith that night slept beneath the oc-an wave
We left him to his slumbers, and as we steamed
away, a last enquiry—au earnest one too—was
heard through the ship, and whieh kasnotyet been
answered—'' V.'as it John Smith ?"
The morning of the sixth day we were Hearing
Acnpulco—running along that beautiful and won
derfui saad beach, wliich forms au unhroki-n white
line for more than sixty miles below the volcanic
bluff at the entrance of the harbor. It was near
the lower end ol this white line that the Nuith
America was run ashore and broken up by the
great waves.
We entered the magnificent little land-locked
bay; and, as we rounded to passed, the fortress,
which still shows the big rents made by*the last
earthquake, we were happy in the thought of
spending a few hums among the cocoa and orange
I groves GfAenpnleo. There is but little here worth
.seidng, except the natural beauties and the people.
The town itself is in ruins, aud those ruins here, as
in all Spanish towns I have seen, are never repaired, Is it indolence that prevents this people from
making repairs? No, matter Ijow valuable the
building, aud when' once a stone is loosed, the
whole structure is.sufrered to go fo ruin. They
build strong aud elegant houses, but titef^nevCT
repair, and consequently, most Spanish tywu.--. like
ouV own Los* Angeles, are piled about with ungainly ruins. ,
iVe found the landing pb.ee crowded wilh market women and boys, with piles of fruit and nuts
spread before them; but we e-ould not patronize
therp.ag we were notified that no fruit*; would be allowed on board the ship. Those who Yiolateddh'e
order ware obliged to throw their fruit to the Hshes,
The order waa a sanitary preoauUtm, aud was
doubtless good, though vexatious.
ViV ruanii'd about its dry and hot Ktrccts for au
hour or two, visiting BJB-png other plaOQS the public school, where, as we onttTed, tin* niac-U'o Iiad
the pupils all jfioeeliog to him ;'aiul then going OD
board, were soon ou oar way steaming along the
abrupt *-hoiT,whiuh for many miles shows almost a
p'.TjR'iuiieular front to the ocoan. The world
about here "'as verv beautiful—above us cloudless
tropical skies—around, tlie deep, unrulilrd Paoiflo
and on the right, the tall, shadowy peaks of the
Cordilleras rising in taint ranges, until their outlines are lost in space.
Prom Aeapuh'o to Oapfi '.Vrienii's it SMUtd Iq
me was the lovelier' SMBBrv, in Qh world. The
deep green shades df the vegetation,! tu.- oaloo ooeaO)

Three days we were reaching Cape Sit, Lucas,
and oa the fourth aft passed the tfargaritatnlands,
where the unfortunate Independence laid up her
worn-out frame.
Soon after great anxiety began to manifest itself
ar tlie fact that tho pumps were put in work, nil
night long Ihrewing water upon the engine, imi if
was whispered that there was no oil on board, and
we might be obliged to lay to till the Sopors came
up, or put In'to'some port for asupply. fortunately, the Sonora soon came along and gave us
oil for our engines and potatoes for the tables, and
away we went.
Now we approached the shores of our own conn-'
try—the Coronados—the holy Islands of OTemento
and Catalinaare behind us. We have passed tie I ween
Sta. Rosa aud Sta. Cruz. The stormy point ofGou-
cepcion, with ita lighthouse, which h« vainly heen

alive with seal and sea-fowl—all the points and

Is safely reached. New scenes in life are now to be
enacted.
Some of tboso scenes are not to be described.
On board are two hundred American wives. The
flirtations and the soft languishing*-; ol the voyage
are forgotten—the hopes of years are about to be
realized, and long separated ones reunited. Those
interesting little family histories which young and
growing confidence had developed, ware only intended to amuse the passing hour. The small
treasons which sometimes;, manifested themselves,
only served in this longed-for moment to render
more loyal heart?'which had ever beat in unison.
There were a few moments of suspense--a:;'! tfii
'came hurried, footsteps, joyful recognitions, violet.t
embraces, explosive kisses, ot eutui-n, iurI noXirth
—while we Who tor so long ba&'bajftsd la the
smiles and confidence of our fair voyageurs, were
left like the condemned Peri, lingering in sight of
paradise, but unable to partake of its joys, and
abandoned, with scarcely Q parting looli of recognition. There were, however, some eases of great
hardship among those wivts. And one, thai of an
interesting young woman from Maine, who eann1
on without notifying her husband of the time of
her arrival, and found him living, as many other
men live in California, with nnother woman, shows
that wives ought to announce their intentions bo-
fore they come too suddenly upon their lords.
The long sea voyage—the epitome of a life-time
in miniature, with its noble or ignoble trails, was
ended, The strong ships that broughtusin safety
through the waters—the officers whose attentions
rendered us comfortable—and the ladies and gentlemen, whose mutual kindness and courtesy contributed to make the journey pleasant, and remembered with affectionate respect.
AffU'Ctixg.—A terrible instance of the Buffering, caused by Pest Office mismanagement or robbery, happened recently at St. .Louis. A man
who went thence to Texas, to return immediately,
found some profitable business which would detain him several months, and therefore wrote to
Jiis wife, inclosing one hundred and fifty dollars
for her present wants. The letter never reached
her, and being, with her five children, turned ojif
ofher home tor non-payment of rent, and driven
to di^pair by the idea that her husband had deserted her, she drowned herself and youngest child
in the Mississippi. The unhappy husband and
father, receiving no answer to his letter, returned
to St. Louis to find himself a widower, and his
children supported by public charily. The Posts
master who stole that one hundred and fifty dollars will have a fearffil account to settle, with a department, the Head of whica It is impossible to
cheat or deceive. ,
