The Cottage Door.
How sweet the rest that labor yields
The humble and the poor,
Where sits the patriarch of the fields
Before his cottage door !
The lark ia singing in the sky,
The swallows on the eaves,
And love is beaming in each eye
Beneath the summer leaves I
The air amid his fragrant powers
Supplies unpurchased health,
And hearts are bounding 'mid tbe liowers,
More dear to him than wealth.
Peace, like the blessed sunlight, plays
Around his humble cot.
And happy nighls and cheerful days
Divide hij lowly lot.
And when the village Sabbath bell
Rings out upon the gale,
The falher bows his head to tell
The music of its tale—
A fresher verdure seems to ali
The fair and dewy sod,
And every inlaot tongue is still
To hear the word ot God.
O, happy hearts 1 to Him who stills
The ravens when they cry,
And makes the lily 'neath the hills
So glorious to the eye—
The trusting patriarch prays to bless
His labors with inctease ;
Such ways are " ways of pleasantness,''
And all such 'paths are peace."

Header! did you ever noliee immediately after
the "marriage" head, that the "obituary" followed? Typicd of the wedding happiness and gnefs
in this life. The chants and songs, and glee of
merry ones today, will be broken by wails to-morrow, lor the soda will be piled on the breasts of
some we thought not so near the grave. We read
who are married, and wish them joy ; a lin« below Is the record of deaths, and we say mournfully, peace to their ashes. Sorrow treads on the
heals or joy; BOtgs are hushed by the footfalls cf
death ; lauttbsare broken rudely-—voices, no mat'
tor bow musical, are still in a moment.

The Cottage Door. How sweet the rest that labor yields The humble and the poor, Where sits the patriarch of the fields Before his cottage door ! The lark ia singing in the sky, The swallows on the eaves, And love is beaming in each eye Beneath the summer leaves I The air amid his fragrant powers Supplies unpurchased health, And hearts are bounding 'mid tbe liowers, More dear to him than wealth. Peace, like the blessed sunlight, plays Around his humble cot. And happy nighls and cheerful days Divide hij lowly lot. And when the village Sabbath bell Rings out upon the gale, The falher bows his head to tell The music of its tale— A fresher verdure seems to ali The fair and dewy sod, And every inlaot tongue is still To hear the word ot God. O, happy hearts 1 to Him who stills The ravens when they cry, And makes the lily 'neath the hills So glorious to the eye— The trusting patriarch prays to bless His labors with inctease ; Such ways are " ways of pleasantness,'' And all such 'paths are peace." When you are ttie "anvil, nave patience ; when you are ihe hammer, strike straight and well. He who cannot take a hint, cannot comprehend a long explanation. Take counsel ol one 'greater and one less thau yourself, and afterwards form your opinion. A great many human beings dig their graves with their teeth. A generous man will place the benefits he confers beneath his feet—those ne receives, nearest his heart. If you wish to appear agreeable In society, you must consent to \>b taught many things which you know already. To succeed in the world, it is much more ne.es- sary to possess the penetration to discover who is a fool, than to discover who is a clever man.* Experience teaches us indulgence ; the wisest man is he that doubts his own judgment with re gard to the motives which actuate his fellow- men. There are many vices which do not deprive us of friends ; there arc many virtues which prevent our having any. A friend that you may have to buy, won't be worth what you have to pay for him—no matter how Utile that may be. Troubles are like babies—they grow bigger by nursing. Don't meet troubles half way, lor they are not worth tbe compliment. We alwas admire the answer of the man who. when asked how old he was, answered : *-■ Just forty years; but if you count by the fun I've seen, I am at least eighty." It is more a weekness than a virtue in strong Christians, when a weak saint is fallen, to aggravate his fall to the uttermost, and to present his sins in such a dreadful dress as shall amaze him He who shall lay the same strength to the rubbing of an earthen dish, as he does to the rubbing ol a pewter platter, instead of cleaning it will surely break it to pieces.
