lAFU'S -QUESTION.
Drifting away
Like mote on theBtream,
Xo day's disappointment
Yesterday'B dream;
Ever resolving—
Never to mend ;
Such is our progress :
Where is the end ?
Whirling away
Like leaf iu the wind,
Points of attachment
Left daily behind,
Fixed to no principle,
Fast to no (rieod ;
Such our fidelity !
Where is the end '.'
Floating away
Like cloud on the hill,
Pendulous, treinulou.3,
Migriitiiie- sl.il' ;
Where to repose ourselves?
Whither to tend!
Such our consistency :
Where is tbe end?
Crystal the pavement,
Seen from the stream;
Firm the reality
Under the dream :
We may not feel it,
Still we may mend :
How we have conquered
Not kuowu till the end.
Bright leaves may scatter,
j SportB of the wind,
But stands to the Winter
Tbe great tree behind :
Frosts shall not wither it,
Storms cannot bend ;
Roots firmly clasping
Tbe rock, at the end.
Calm is the firmament,
Over tbe cloud ;
Clear shine the stars, throng
The rifts of the shroud ;
There our repose shall be,
Thitber we tend :

Butyouhavo yet to learn my boy, what was
the great reason for sending Fremont to tbe
everlasting hills. Ou Tuesday, I asked a knowing veteran at Willard's what it really was. He
looked at me a moment in immovable silence ;
then he softly placed bis spoon gyiniiasyum ou a
table, looked cautiously in all directions, crept
tip to my ear on tiptoe, and says he:
" Ferriages!"
"Son of a bottle !" says I, "your information is
about as intelligible as the ordinary remarks of
Ralph Waldo Emerson."
The knowing veterau suffered his nose to take
a steam bath for a moment, aud then says be ;

Humors of tlio War— X Practical Jo I*e.
The soldiers in Kentucky arc famous for practical jokes, and are constantly on tbe lookout for
subjects. Oue was recently procured in the person of a new teamster, who had the charge of six
large, shagicy mules. Jehu was also proprietor of
two bottles of old Bourbon—a contraband in camp
—whieh a wag discovered, and resolved, to possess. Being aware that tlio dri<*er'a presence was
an impediment to tho theft, be hit upon tbe following plan to get rid of him.
Approaching the driver who waa busy currying
hia mules, ho accosted him with, "I Bay, old fellow, what are you doing there now?"
" Can't you see!" said Jehu gruffly.
Certainly," said tbe wag, "but that is not
r busiuese. It is after tattoo, and there is a
fellow hired here by the Geueral, who curries al
the mu'ea and horses brought in after tattoo."
The mule driver bit at ouce, and wanted to
know where the "hair dresser" kept himself.—
Whereupon he was directed to Gen. Nelson's tenti
with the assurance that there was where
hung out.:'
" You cau't mistake the man." said the
wag—"he is a large fellow, and puts on a thundering sight of aits for a mau in his low business.
He will probably refuse to do it. and tell you to
go lo the devil, but don't you mind that; hi

Jehu posted off, entered the tent where our
Nai.iol.-on of the 4th Division sat in deep reverie
probably considering the most expeditious method
of expelling the rebel General Buckner troi
native State, slapped him on tbe back with force
sufficient to annihilate a man of ordinary size.
Springing to his feet tho General accosted his
uuiuvited guest with: "Well, sir, who aro you,
uud what the devil do you want?"
"Old boss, I've got a job for you now, six
mules to be curried, and ri*- bt off, too," aud the
captain ot mules, nothing dauuted at the flashing
eyes ofthe General.
" Do you know whom you arc addressing, Bir?:
"Yes," said Jehu, elevating his voice to a
pitch which rendered tho words audible a squ
off, "yon are the fellow hired by Uncle Sam to
clcau mules, and I won't have nuy foolishness-
Clean them mules, and I'll give you a drink oi
busthead."
You infernal villian," exclaimed the General,
' perfectly furious, "I am Gen. Nelson, the
commander of this Division."
Jehu placed the thumb of bis right hand against
e nose, and extending his lingers, moved them
slowly, in a manner supposed by some to be indicative of great wisdom. The General's sword
leaped from its scabbard, and Jehu from the tent
just in time to save bis head. Our boys drank
the big mule driver's health in Bourbon. The
story boou got out, and is now the joke of the

A woman hates a question, but loves to ask one.
The female miud is too poetical to be tamely

puuetuates her love letters.
Cupid is blind to everything—save pin-mor.ey.
In society, compliments are loans, which the

A woman wins an old man by listening to him ;

WASTED TIME
Alone in the dark and silent night.
With a heavy thought of a Vanished year,
When evil deeds come back to sight,
And good deeds rise with a welcome cheer;
Alone with the spectres of the past,
That come with the old year's dying chime,
Thrre glooms one shadow datk and fust,
The shadow of Wasted Time.
The chances of happiness castaway,
The opportunities never sought.
The good resolves thateveiy dav,

" I am very anxious to witnecu this," sard the
Emperor, who listened to lireton Double with increased interest. " Colonel let a troop advance,
and let the brave Breton join Ac ranks."
" The colonel directed tho movements, which
were executed by Breton Double with so much ardor and precisiou, that the Emperor was delighted and surprised at witnessing a woman manage
her horse with tbe vigor and courage of an old
campaigner.
-"lam satisfied with your zeal an3 ability,"
said the Emperor, " and appoint you regimental

the same time placing a Napoleon in her hand
and ordering twenty-five additional to be given
her.
"Go and rejoin your squadron ; we shall meet
again.''
'' Breton Double expressed her grateful thanks
to the L'mperor. aod lost no time in taking tbe position to which, by her new rank she became entitled, amidst the congratuUvtiona and cheers of the
numerous witnesses of the scene. Tho 6tb hussars
shortly afterwards joined the corps of the army in
Prussia, and the battle of Eylau afforded Breton
Double an opportunity of distinguishing herself-
The action had continued more than two- hours,
when Breton Double, who was sent to th-e right
wing with an order, rejoined her corps, perceiving that tbe troops were surrounded- by a large
body of Prussians, courageously dashed through
the enemy, Bword in hand, killed the commander,
relieved her countrymen, and returned to the
camp proudly displaying tbe sash o f the vanquished officer.
Tbe Emperor having been informed of this gallant feat, directed a golden medal to be presented
to her, wbich was received by our heroine with
grateful and religions respect. Subsequently, in

iu expectation of being enabled to satisfy all the
demands she had on ber country for her long aud
faithful services, by re-admitting her to (he Cross of

captain.
The following sentiment, which she so often uttered under her sad trials, will manifest the character of this sxt*aordinary and noble minded woman : "Although my fortune is humble, my heart
is elevated." Tbe son of Breton Double obtained
high rank in the dragoons, and accompanied the
Emperor to FAb&.—fncidents ofthe French Revolution.

The soldiers in Kentucky arc famous for practical jokes, and are constantly on tbe lookout for subjects. Oue was recently procured in the person of a new teamster, who had the charge of six large, shagicy mules. Jehu was also proprietor of two bottles of old Bourbon—a contraband in camp —whieh a wag discovered, and resolved, to possess. Being aware that tlio dri<*er'a presence was an impediment to tho theft, be hit upon tbe following plan to get rid of him. Approaching the driver who waa busy currying hia mules, ho accosted him with, "I Bay, old fellow, what are you doing there now?" " Can't you see!" said Jehu gruffly. Certainly" said tbe wag, "but that is not r busiuese. It is after tattoo, and there is a fellow hired here by the Geueral, who curries al the mu'ea and horses brought in after tattoo." The mule driver bit at ouce, and wanted to know where the "hair dresser" kept himself.— Whereupon he was directed to Gen. Springing to his feet tho General accosted his uuiuvited guest with: "Well, sir, who aro you, uud what the devil do you want?" Jehu placed the thumb of bis right hand against e nose, and extending his lingers, moved them slowly, in a manner supposed by some to be indicative of great wisdom. The General's sword leaped from its scabbard, and Jehu from the tent just in time to save bis head. Our boys drank the big mule driver's health in Bourbon.
