What'a the t'su ot Fretting» Why will our poets sigh and moau O'er withered hopes and flowers, When fresh joys spring again as soon As sunshine after showers. Our dullest hours, if rightly spent. Will quickly pass away, And pleasant smiles Irom those we love Will cheer the darkest day. A primary regard ia paid to moral aud religious flnties, They rise early, breakfast at eight, and dine at two. Their various occupations are allotted out with military exactness. One hour finds them engaged in study of the ancient, another of modern authors, their acquaintanceship with the languages being first founded on a thorough knowledge of their grammatical construction, and afterwards familiarized and perfected by conversation, Next they are trained in tliose mil itary exercises which give dignity;and bearing.— Another hour is agreeably filled up with the lighter accomplishments of music and singing. Again the happy party assemble in the riding school, where they may be seen deeply interested iu the various evolutions of the menage. Thence while drawing and the further exercises of music, and the lighter accomplishments, call oft the at- attention of their sisters- -the young princes proceed to busily engage themselves iu a carpenters' shop, filled up expressly for them, at tho wish of the royal consort, with a turning lathe and oilier tools eseeniial to a thorough knowledge of the craft. They thus become not only theoretically but pratcically acquainted with the useful arts of life. A small laboratory is occasionally brought into requisition, at the instance also of the royal lather, and the minds of the childreu are thus led from a contemplation of the curiosities of chemical science and the wonders of nature to an inquiry into stuuenis inEpv oowu nnrtr tsayits] unmi-^iB ——r philosophy, and shoulder their miniature percussion guns—which they handle with the dexterity of practiced sportsmen — for a shooting stroll through the Royal Gardens. The evening meal, the preparation for the morning lessons, and brief religious instruction, close the day. ^u-perStUldnB ol* Great Men. Most great men have been superstitious. The courier bringing a letter from England, iu wiiich the death of his old physician, Polidori, was slated, Lord Byron remarked: "1 was convinced something unpleasant hung over me last night. I expected to hear that somebody I knew was dead ; so it tunisout." Who can help being superstitious? Scott believed in Becond sight; Rosseaa tried whether lie would be saved or not by aiming at a tree with a slono ; Goethe trusted to tlie chance of riking the water, whether he would ionic undertaking. Swift placed the success of his life on the drawing the trout he had hooked out of the water. Byron, on one occasion remarked : "Several extraordinary things happened on my pirthday ;" so they did to Napoleon; and a more wonderful thing occurred to Antion- ctte. "At my weiklifig something whispered to me that I was signing ray death warrant. At the last moment I would have retracted if I could have done so, I am a great believer in presentiments." Socrates' demon was no fiction ; Monk Lewis had his monitor, and Bonaparte his warnings. Byron had a belief in unlucl-y days. He once relused to be introduced to a lady b"cause it was on Friday. On this same ill starred day he would never pay a visit. 11 .<np.11> 1 pi hi Profit or IIkns.—The proceeds of nineteen hens one cock) for one year, ending February 17, USUI). iy a carelul account, (and sold too. at a price be- ow par,) I find to be $S3 10. The hidden mineral wealth of the Sierra Madre region is bound to be (leveliiped, and that too, through the enterprise add skill of the Anglo-Saxon race. To day, (wc learn from her captain,! the schoon er Storm Cloud will leave for Ihe Colorado Kivei via Guaymas. By her goes as passenger, an old resident of Sonora, who contemplates fitting out au expedition, on his arrival, for'the purpose of projecting for gold in the heart of the mineral region borderiog on Chihuahua. The party will number some fourteen men, besides one or more of the Yaqui tribe of Indians, who are very friendly disposed lo the Americans. It is the intention of the company to proceed by boat, from Guaymas to fti-S -••.ivigal:'!-/'' Tiiey wiil pass"through San An. tonio de la Iluerta, where there are some of the richest diggings in tlie country, then into the eastern fastnesses of the mountains. The Yaqui is navigable to Cocori, and tlie Mayo, also, for small boats. The valleys in the Yaqui district are represented by our informant to be among the richest in the State—which was ceded to that tribe by ih'e Spauish Government. There are in it eight pueblos, each of which has a Yaqui Governor, An old Spaniard at Labor has a ranch of eight leagues square upon which are employed three hundred of the Yaqui natives. The products of the soil are wheat, sugar, corn, beans, nnd all tropical fruits, etc. . The mines continue to be extensively worked.— At Magdalena our informant says he observed 102 mules laden with silver, dug in the mines at Altar. The old Mexican plan of working with arrastras. smelting, etc., has scarcely been encroached upon, as there are very few whites engaged in silver mining. There is an abundance of water for mining purposes in the gold districts of the Sierra madre.— The gold found hitherto has been coarse, but pure. The rainy season usually sets in about August, but there have beea showers as late as JIarch of the present year. The present population oT the country is csti. mated at 100,000, ef whom 35,000 are Mexicans, 250 whites, and the balance Indians, of the Yaqui, Mayo, Opata, Anache, and other tribes. Our informant says tbat the bitler prejudice existing against Capt. ty. D, Porter, of the U. S. sloop-of-war St. Mary's, on account of his action during the recent difficulties, has been removed, and that the natives, and Ures Newspaper, now admit that his course was a pruper and judicious one to pursue. The vicinity of Camp Floyd has in this city quite a reputation for deed^ of^ vi^e^^-i*^ - it'rather unsafe to be eeen in Unit quarter. However, through prompt and energetic movement and a double guard, the disturbance subsided. Three or four trains have recently arrived from San Francisco and Los Angeles, freighted with goods for various of our merchants, which shows tbat, notwithstanding the enormous amounts of dry goods and groceries which have been brought to tins territory for the past two or three days, the Salt Lake nlarket is by no means overstocked. Well- Jr., Goodbury, Ot., March 10, I860.—„V«o Haven Registt r. Louia Adolphe Thiers, one of fhe most eminent persons of the nineteenth century, and one of the most powerful orators in France, and celebrated for his splendid histories of The Revolution, The Consulate, and the Empire of that country, wae born in Marseilles iu 17117. llis lather was a blacksmith. Jn 1815 he repaired to Aix to attend the lectures of the (acuity of law in that town.— There he devoted himself to the study of literature, .philosophy, history, aud politics. Kis ardent and ambitious spirit ieeliDg a presentiment of a iliant career, he began to play the role of a party leader among his fellow students. He clamored, harangued against the government ot the restoration, evoked the recolectious of the republic and the empire, made himself disliked by the profes-sors, execrated by the commissary of police, adored by his comrades, and carried off the prize of eloquence iu spite of every obstacle. There is antecedent connected with this last fact uilieiently amusing to be related. A prize had been offered fur the best Enlogium on Vanvenargues, by the Academy of Aix, a good and peaceful academy, which, to make use of Voltaire's witticism, has always succeeded, like an honest woman, in keeping itselt from being talked about. Thiers took it into his head to win the prize, and sent his manuscript ; but unluckily the name ofthe author was either divined or betrayed, and as there was no other candidate who deserved the-aim, the worthy members of the areopagus, rather than award it to the little Jacobin, put ofi' the decision to the following year. At the appointed time the manuscript of Thiers made its appearance; but in the interim, a production had come from Paris which eclipsed all its competitors, and they hastened to crown it, according, however, to the papers presented by Thiers, premium. The name of the Parisian v'ctor was then unsealed ; and great was the consternation of the academicians when it was found to be that of Thiers himself, who had indulged iu the malicious pleasure of mystifying the learned gentlemen, by treating the subject in a new point of view, caus- g the composition to ho copied in a strange hand: sending it on a journey 1 Un -A i b- , , , ,; by tha operator of the Alta Telegraph office at Fotsom, that a Chinaman living near the I pjington House, in Sacramenfo couniy. on the cVkniio road, was struck by lightning and killed during the thunder storm of Friday, May 25th.— Union. Of course when fhe number of spirals to the inch diminishes, Ihe quality of the wool becomes relatively inferior. Many tests have been tried, but this is consider- tbe simplest and best. Ootswold wool and some other inferior wools do not measure nine spirals to the inch. Postal Piiockeds—Singular Statistics—In a late Atlantic cotemporary we find a table of tho Post offices in this country, the net annual proceeds of which place the city of San Francisco fourth on the list. For slio certainly is exceeded by New Orleans, Baltimore. Cincinnati, St. Louis «nd Chicago; and yet the net proceeds of (he Post, Office here aro nearly four times as great as those of the latter place, the population of which is at leaSt 175.000, The cily ol Pittsburgh, which numbers 100,000 people, returns but $J2,8:iD as the net proceeds of her post office, and Brooklyn, conlaining 250,000 inhabitants, shows but $20,541. The cities of Buffalo, Newark, and Albany, although equal in population to Sau Francisco, do uot exhibit one-fifth the amount of postal business transacted-here. A number of large cilies of 30,000 inhabitants and upwards, are not included in tlie list, because tho net proceeds of their post offices are less than $14,000-—Alta. What'a the t'su ot Fretting»
Why will our poets sigh and moau
O'er withered hopes and flowers,
When fresh joys spring again as soon
As sunshine after showers.
Our dullest hours, if rightly spent.
Will quickly pass away,
And pleasant smiles Irom those we love
Will cheer the darkest day.
'Tii« all in vain Io mourn and weep
O'er milk that has been spilled,
And just as vain to idly wait
To have the pail re filled,
I never drop my buttered boast
Upon the sanded fluor,
And if I did I'd leave it there,
And calmly butter more.
Nor dot find this world so cold,
Or friends so bard to win,
And where we have so much to love,
To grumble is a sin.
