The Model llii^bmitl.
Hear what the merry Saxc says of the model
husband:
I Fa* a model husband in a dream,
Wharf thinga are not exactly what they seem.
A moral man, to skeptics be it known.
The wife he loved and cherished was—his own.
And for the lest—I saw the husband wait
With horse aud chaise five minutes at the gate
While Jane put on her things ; nor speak oue sour
Or bitter word, though waiting hall an hour
For dinner ; and, like patience ou a throne,
He didn't swear to find a buttou gone.
The Ttnllnis Question.
It would appear lhat the Italian annexation
question has been well nigh settled. The principal powers have consented to the wishes ol Napoleon. They bad all replied to France rolulive to
Savoy and Nice, the following being the substance
of their notes.
Russia says tbat so long as tbe right of the people to ielsict rulers is not put forward by Prance,
and that m the present change does* not aflect ihe
balance of Europe, what Sardinia may do wilh
Savoy ia no business of hers.
Prussia saya that, as* the Emperor of France formally disavows the doctrine of natura! frontiers,
tbe transfer of Savoy is none of her business.
Austria declares that she certainly does not approve of any annexation of the kind, but ae En-
rope stood by when other annexations were effected, she does not see what she has to do with the
annexation of Savoy,
Great Britain is suspicious ; regards the annexation at an act of bad faith, but thiuks a too trifling matter to quarrel about.
Switnerland, aa a matter of course, protests
against tbe act.
Aftor all, the Italians seem to have won a sub-
•tantial gain through the instrumentality of Napoleon—a gain wbich, if wisely improved, may
completely restore tbe independence of their coun-
try.
On the night of the 25th, J. D. Adams, editor
or the Serenton Herald, was mobbed together with
his employees, by a party of men from Dunmore.
The difficulty originated on the exposure of a
gambling house in tbat place.

besides several saw and flouring mills at Gardiner

burned near Memphis. Seven children and Bin of
the crew wero lost, Boat valued at $(j,000, and

SOMEBOOT'8 SON.
BY T'VlLniilT.
Somcl)0(l**'fl son was out last night,
Bruising about the town ;
And il 1 mistake not, lie waa tight,
'■Tight as ii Derby down."
I know lie's considered n mora! youth,
Above suspicion - but Unit
Is no reason why, to tell the truth,
He hadn't "a brick in bis bat."
Daylight morality often takes
S range fancies into it*- bead.
And "plays the devil.-'' or * jumps up snakes'
When the public eye ia iu bed.
t:My son can't dance," Somebody said,
"Kor never a lesaon took lie'' —
But be danced laat night, while you were in bed,
.And '■Twilight" was there to see.
You may call it dancing, or not, as you feel,
Though (or half au hour, or more,
He danced, or '"jigged" a "tangle-loot reel,"
In front ot my office door.
'■My sou can't sing," Somebody swears,
But be sung last night, I know,
As hellish.a song, as a demon dares
To sing in the regions below !
■'My son do'nt imbibe," Somebody thinks,
Well, maybe he do'nt ; but then,
Tlmt lie acts vej'y much like one who drinks,
Can be proved by a hundred men.
Yet something was tight, yes, drunk, last night.
So drunk it could scarcely crawl ;
Perhaps 'twas tlie brim of a crownless hat
Thai I found by my garden wall.'
So, for fear I am wrong, and Somebody's
My hasty words I recall,
And say (bat the thing I saw last night,
Waa nobody's son—that's all.

A Mormon 111 Us ion my In Olilo.
Mormonism is still in practical operation
StOQtfgst us. Oi) last Friday, a tall, raw boned
Saint, with a complexion very strongly resembling that of boiled tiipe, arrived here Irom Pitta-
burg with a couple of wives, but deeming Ins flock
loo small to slait Salt Lake-ward witb, lield forth
as follows to an admiring audience, at a house
over the Canal, with a view to the perfection of
ihe material necessary to tbe coinpletenees ot his
domcslic felicily. His text was :
'Men is skeerce and Weemeen is plenty ''
■•Bictliern and Sisteru—pertickler tbe Sistern :
1 want to say a few word.s 10 you about Mormon-
ism—not lor my own sake, but (or yo\x\\\,for men
is shierce and weemtn is plenty.
■■Morinoiiis-m Is built on that'high old principle
wbi ii «-a that it aint good lor a man to be alone,
and a miglily sight worse ior a woman. There-
lore, if a mau leels good with a little company, a
good deal of it ought lo make him ftel au awful
sight belter,
•The erst principle of Mormonism is, that wo
man are a good thing, and tbe second principle is,
llial you can't have loo much of a good thing.—
Woman is tenderer than mau. and is necessary to
smooth down tbe roughness of bis character, and
as trail has a good many rough pints ol his natur,
be oughtn't to give one woman too much to do.
but set each one to work amootbiu' some pertickler pint.
'■Don't think Tin over anxious for you to jine
us, for I aint. I'm not Ppgakiq for my good, but.
"1 said woman was tenderer than man, bul you
needn't fee) a uck up.about it, for so she ounht to
be ; she was made fo purpose. Bul how was she
made so? Where did she git it from! Why. she
was created out of" the side bone ol a man, and the
side-bone of a man is like the side-bi ne of a turkey -ihe Underest part of him. Therefore, as a
woman has three side-bones and a man only one,
ol course she ia three times as lender as a man is,
and is in duty bound lo repay lhat tenderness of
which shu robbed liyn. And how did she rob him
of ibis side-bone? Why, exactly as she robs his
pockels now-a days of his loose change—she took
advantage of bim when he was asleep.
"But as women is more tenderer than man, so is
man more forgivenor than w.nnan, therefore I
won't say anything more about the side-bone, or
liie small change, but invite you all to jine my
train, for I'm a big shepherd out our way, and fare
sumptuously every day on purple an fine linen.
"When I tirst lauded on ihe shores of the Great
Salt Lake, I wasn't rich in weemen, I nad but one
poor old yoe. but men ia skeerce and icomen is
plenty, and like a keerlul shepherd, I began lu
increase my um-k. We«men heerd of us and our
lovin ways, and they kept pourin in. They come
from Ihe North, and ihey come from the Smith,—
tiny come IVoiti the East and tbey come from ihe
West, ihey come Irom Europe, they come from
Aisjiey, and a few ot tbem come from Atrikiy,
and from biiin the miserable owner of one old yoe,
1 become ihejoylul shepherd of a mighty flock,
with a right smart sprinkling of lambs, friskier
and fatier than anybody else's, and Tve still got
room lor a few more-
"As I said before, I'm not talkin particltter for
my bi-iu-lit, bat for yours—for nten is skeerce and
Women tsphnty. Still I'd a leetle rather you'd
go along w-th me than not, pu-tickler you fat one
wilh the caliker sun-bounet. Don't hesitate, but
take the chance while you can git it, and I'll make
you the 'bell-yoe7 of the flock. I'll lead jou
through green pastures and the high grass : show
you where you may caper in the sunshine, and lay
down iu plensaut places ; and, as you are in pretty
good condition already, in course of lime you
shall be the fattest of the flock. Jine in, jine in;
jine my train ; jine it now ; for men is skeerce
and women isplefily."
Tbe appeal was irresistible. At the last account

To ihe account may be added also the American

The stock business seems to have been immensely stimulated all over the United States since
1854. At present the cattle market of tbe Atlantic and Mississippi are in as flat a condition as? the
stock markets of Culilbruia and Oregon. Speculators are making a great time over finc-lminil
stock, and Ihe cosffiness of breeding and ranching,
yet the native L'alifornians say it is a line bmdness

you going to pasture three millions oT animals in
California, unless 1S61 and 18(12 areas gncd years,

were large breeders ot the various kinds of sleek.
At least Beven-eights of the territories of the
United States west of fhe line of Arkansas and
Missouri to the Pacific are more fitted by nature
for pasturing animals than any other occupation.
The cultivated spcts are comparatively rare, but
Ihe immense mineral development, with the pastoral pursuit.--, will always cause it lo be inhabited
by a rugged, independent, unconlrolable set of
men, perhaps by a kind of civilized Arabs. The
habit!1 ol these people1, like in Asia, must in time
have great effect on the political affairs of North
Amer ca. The pasture table lands of the eastern

Th-" eight6 volume cl the J\ew American Cyclo
pedia contains a very inliresling artie e on gold,
in which occurs this passage :
The existence ol gold in California has been
known from tbe time of tbe expedition of Drake,
1577-!9, being particularly noticed by Ilaklnyt iu
his account ol the region. The occurrence of
[gold upou the plaeers was noticed in a work upou
Upper California, published in Spain in 1690. by
Loyola Cavello, at tnat time a priest at the Mission of San Jose, bay of Sau Francisco. Capt
Shelvocke in 1721 speaks favorably of the appearance of the soil for gold, and of tbe probable
richness oi the c* untry in metals. The '■ Histoid
co Geographical Dictionary" 6i Antonio de Alce-
do. 17811-'!), positively affirms Ihe abundance of
gold, even in lumps of 5 lo 8 pounds. In 1837 a
Priest came from California to final- mala, and ly
his representations induced Mr. Young A-nderson,
a Scotch gentleman, to attempt to enlist English
capital for thernrpose of exploring foil gold in
the vicinity of San Francisco. The seheme was
regarded in England, when afterward proposed by
Mr. Anderson, as Quixotic. The favorable a-ftpear
ance of Hie country lor gold, and of Oregon also,
his geological report of the country. In limit's
••Merchant Magazine" for April, lc-47, is a very
decided stiitement by Mr. Sloat respecting the
richness of the country in gold, made from his ol -
servHtions there the two preceding years ; and he
confidently predicts lhat its mineral developmenls
will greatly exceed in richness and variety the
most sanguine expectations.

The Model llii^bmitl. Hear what the merry Saxc says of the model husband: I Fa* a model husband in a dream, Wharf thinga are not exactly what they seem. A moral man, to skeptics be it known. The wife he loved and cherished was—his own. And for the lest—I saw the husband wait With horse aud chaise five minutes at the gate While Jane put on her things ; nor speak oue sour Or bitter word, though waiting hall an hour For dinner ; and, like patience ou a throne, He didn't swear to find a buttou gone. The Ttnllnis Question. It would appear lhat the Italian annexation question has been well nigh settled. The principal powers have consented to the wishes ol Napoleon. They bad all replied to France rolulive to Savoy and Nice, the following being the substance of their notes. Russia says tbat so long as tbe right of the people to ielsict rulers is not put forward by Prance, and that m the present change does* not aflect ihe balance of Europe, what Sardinia may do wilh Savoy ia no business of hers. Prussia saya that, as* the Emperor of France formally disavows the doctrine of natura! frontiers, tbe transfer of Savoy is none of her business. Austria declares that she certainly does not approve of any annexation of the kind, but ae En- rope stood by when other annexations were effected, she does not see what she has to do with the annexation of Savoy, Great Britain is suspicious ; regards the annexation at an act of bad faith, but thiuks a too trifling matter to quarrel about. Switnerland, aa a matter of course, protests against tbe act. Aftor all, the Italians seem to have won a sub- •tantial gain through the instrumentality of Napoleon—a gain wbich, if wisely improved, may completely restore tbe independence of their coun- try. On the night of the 25th, J. D. Adams, editor or the Serenton Herald, was mobbed together with his employees, by a party of men from Dunmore. The difficulty originated on the exposure of a gambling house in tbat place. Tbe pott offico at Cairo. Illinois, the poorhouse et Stonebridge.Mass, and thirteen dwelling houses besides several saw and flouring mills at Gardiner Maine, have recently been destroyed by lire. On the night of the 26th, the steamboat A. T. Lacy, from St. Louie, bound to New Orleans, was burned near Memphis. Seven children and Bin of the crew wero lost, Boat valued at $(j,000, and cargo at $12,000. No insurance, and is a total lOBB. Foreign Hems. King Victor Emanuel has just entered his 41st year, having been born on the Mth March, 1820. Switzerland is still exercised about the annexation of Savoy to France, but nothing important has occurred. Victor Hugo, still in exile through his stubborn unwillingness to accept any favor at the hands oi the Emperor, has just finished a novel called -'Les Miserables.'' It is a collection of touching tales designed to illustrate the sufferings of the people. The Princess of Prussia wishing to testify her gratitude to.M.
