little expense. Take them carefully from your
hearths, and save them till your corn arid potatoes
hare risen two or three inches from the ground,
and then take a basket on your arm, and from it
take a small handful of ashes, and cast it at the
root of your plauts, aud hoe theia eoon, no as to
cover the ashes.
Aebee contain all the inorganic substance ofthe
wood or plants which are consumed ; part of these
are soluble and part insoluble. But tbe soluble
substance fixed with water will dissolve tbe insoluble. Thus, dissolved potash will dissolve pilicn,
and prepare it tor glaziug tbe stalks of chew, corn,
wheat, kc.
Not a particle of ashc3shoul(i£0 to waste.- Leached has parted with m'ost of its potash, but it still
retains its phosphoric acid and most of its lime.
Ashes neutralize acids in the soil; tiiey warm
cold, mossy, wet places; they are very destructive
to insects; they assist to break down and dissolve
the coarse fibers and states in compost heaps*; reader bard clayey ROils open, loamy and fertile.
Tbe potash, so material to most crops, can be
obtained here only from ashes. Iu granite regions,
potash is obtained from the dissolution of tbe feldspar, but we have none in this region of country.
Wheat contains a large rrcportion of potash.
Fifty-nine per cent of the ach of corn is carbonate
of potash, one-half the earthy pai t of Irish potatoes
'" pure potash.
Save your ashes, therefore, as carefully as you
do your five and ten cent pieces; apply them to
your crops with car , and you will (ind them ofa
rich diep green color, while growing-, and heavy
with nutriment at harvest.—Ancient City.

the idea that the gentleman wearing Uncle Sam's
short jacket was a man ot his word, and like Byron's piratical hero, rather inclined to knock onu'f
head oif lirst, and enquire into the offence subsequently, I didn't move a muscle. Any one look
ing ot me at the moment would have imagined I
was standing for a full lento daugerreotype, the
only difference being that my countenance probable did not do what the artist always commandf,
as he jerks away the black cloth—i. e., to "wear'a
pleasant expression."
The corporal marched up to the Officer,  who  il
appears was the officer of the day, who having been
up iill night in charge ofthe guard, looked   very
sleepy, and touching his cap, reported as follows :
