I
TI»e Wet "Weather Stream.
Thou flashing, dashing, tiny brook,
With wary waters glancing,
I look on thee with laughing look,
My soul like thec Is dancing ;
Onward bounding,
Ever sounding.
As thy riplets rush along ;
Would that never
Thou should ever
Cease thy soulful sounding song.
But tho morning of the morrow.
Aud thy bed will be thy shroud,
For the sunlight is thy sorrow,
And thy fountain ia the cloud ;
Thus a sadness
Follows gladness.
O ! our life doth strangely seem,
In its rushing
And its hushing,
Like thine own, thou cbiud-born stream.

On Board Steamer Senator, Irom San FiMiK-l.-ito
to Sai> P-edro, April IStli. 1S6U.
Dear Family—We're off from shore; loud
(alkings cease ; wild waters roar, and, booming,
sounds tbe "signal sun." while rapidly we're moving on from cankering cares and business strife,
excitements of commercial lile ; where namre and
art, with open arms, salute us with unnumbered
charms—with mingling scones of happiness, apparently, of earthly blies. "
Tbe Bi»y, its shores on every hand, our admiration doth Gommand ; the lovely islands, here and
there, like precious jewels set with care ; the distant landscape, decked in green, the cily in the
foreground seen ; where science, with the countless
arts, most faithfully have played their parts; rear-
ng a city by surprise, of infant age but giant siz:*-
of all Pacific's coast the Queen, though yet not
having reached her teens.
JBort fouit. Gibraltar of defense, well manned
and armed and ruled with sense ; our land-locked
harbor, where our fleet may rendezvous in safe retreat, however wild may rage the storm, however
thitkly foes may swarm.
The Golden Gate we're passing through, the
world wide waters now in view; above, around,
all's blithe and gay, and sweet enchantment rules
the day.
Bold Senator.' noblest of boats that on our inland waters float, seeks outside elements to brave,
aud measure strength with ocean's wave; nor fears
explosion, wreck, or Btraod, while Captain Sceley
holds command.
How checkered is life's flitting scene ; now al'
is calm, the sky serene; and from those grand celestial mines, the Sun, in melting splendor shines.
Another d'ty, e'en one abort hour, mad Boreas with
terrific power, may ocean rend in spray and foam,
and veil tbe sun in midnight gloom. Thus checkered, life hath ever been, and thus will close life's
flitting scene.
'Tis eve. Our brilliant day is gone. Night's
dazzling scenes come rushing on. Soon as the
orb of day retires, each nightly orb to rule aspires.
East, west, north, south, where fancy leads, tbe
glit'ring diamond curtain spreads.
Thus marshaled on lhe starry plain, distinctions
each alone to gain ; celestial monarchs war declare,
celestial palms to win and wear. With twinkling,
sparkling, burning light, begins the glit'ring, dazzling tight. Now this, now that, in splendor flames,
and, crowri'd oVr ail, himself proclaims ; till
others, still more brilliant, dare, imperial honors
claim to wear. Like earthly kings they rule aud
ign, until eclipsed themselves, or slain.
Thus, on they rush, o'er Heaven's dome, till from
tbe east, through spray and foam, more powerful
competition shines ; in modest rays and fairer
Hues, our satellite, " night's silvery Queen," ob
tbe crown and rules the scene. Then, aB she
o'er tbe heavenly arch, in royal robes pursues her
march, these Jjjnst'rinjr beroesvevery..one.^.turn
she aims, and, smiling, pence she now proclaims, and rules with undisputed sway, till conquered by the King of Day.
But, filled with true heroic fight, these exiles
ill, tomorrow night, soon as the conquering
King retires, rekindle tbeir celestial fives, and fill
th strife, aod heroes slain, this self same battle
field again. Sueh battles bave been nightly fought
nee worlds were into being brought. Their right
to war thus, being divine, while Sun, and Moon,

There are about 56,000 species of plants on exhibition in tbe Museum of Natural History in
Paris. The whole number ol species in earih and
sea cannot be less than four or live hundred thousand. These are of all sizes, from the invisible
forests in a bit of moldlness, to the towering trees
ot Malibnr, 50 feet iuXjircumlereiice, and tlie banyans whose shoots cover a surface of five acres.—
Each of these has a complicated system of vessels
for the circulation of ils juices. Some trees have

will cover 15 or 20 men. Some exuviate tbeir

The New York Tribune has a lengthy article on
this theme. Irom wliich wc exnact :
Actors are usually engaged for certain '-lines ol
husiness,'■* thai is, each oQ-eengages to perform only such Styles of chnnicter as bfl Ifl beftt qua!:li: d io
personate. Uuless engagements were made wilh a
cerlain definite understanding on this point, it is
probable that when the manager came to distribute the charaote»*s of the play for his cpening
night, he would discover that all bis men would
insist on being "Romcos," and no woman would
consent that any otber than she herself should be
the ''Juliet-' of tho evening, and so, the subordinate characters finding no representatives, altogether the play would he in a bud way. Tin; difficulty
ts obviated, as before stated, by engaging each actor for a certain style of character, the ri muoera
lion of course varying with the different degrees
of artistic excellence and ability required. The
principal ■■lines of business,-'* in a legitimate theatre, are technically named as follows:
Leading Man. Heavy .Man, Juvenile Man, Light
Comedian, first Walking Gentleman, second V.'nl!,--
ing a-Jiiueman, Brat Old Man. second Old Man,
first Low Coined an, second Low Comedian, Respectable Utility. General Utility, Leading Woman,Heavy Woman, Hist Old Woman, second Old
Woman, Juvenile Woman, "-VaUcing Lady, Chambermaid.
The requirements of the Leading Man. the
Light Comedian, thc Old Men and tbe Low Comedians, need no explanations, lhe names being suggestive of tbeir various duties. The '-Heavy
Man" is not required to rival Daniel Lambert in
physical ponderosity—but he is so called from
having so much of ibe disagreeable duty of the
drama to do—he plays all the villains of the pieces, and consequently has much heavy work on
his hands in the shape of curses, tbteats of vengeance, howls of **R-r-r r-r-r-evenge," and tbe utterance of a large assortment of maledictions, imprecations and anathemas, and also a tremendous
sight of violent duty for the knees in the way of
dying agonies and prolonged mortal struggles.
The '"Juvenile Man" plays the lovers in heroic
pieces, and tbe "Walking Gentlemen" enact small
speaking parts that require a certain amount of
stage experience. "Respectable Utility" men do
the servants and other insignificant parts of a few
lines, and the "General Utility'' are supposed to
be ready to undertake any very subordinate character; wben not employed in removing or placing
chairs and tables lor the proper disposition of the
scenes—they generally do tlieir acting in groups
or --quads—doing duty as villagers, citiz.ms, soldiers, mobs, or whatever style of crowd may be
called for by the exigencies of the play.
On the female side ct the house, tbe business is
distributed in like manner, the "Chambermaid1
answering to the "first low comedy man," r.nd
claiming the broadly funny parts in all the play:
The remuneration of actors comes next into
consideration, and the scale has a wide range—
from three dollars a week up to two hundred dollars a night. This last sum was, for years, tbe de.
maud ol Edwin Forrest. Other stars are generally
content with certain-sharing terms;' that is, tin
gross receipts, alter a cerlain specified amount ha
been deducted for the expenses of the theatre, is
equally divided between tbe star and the mana
ger. This isthe fairest basis oil which to conduct
this starring system, because, by this plan, lhe
aries of all the stock company are assured first,
and the profits of the star depend on bis own power of attracting the public to Ihe theatre.
Iu New York the salaries paid to stock actors
are higher on the average than those in any other
city in the Un .ted States. Tbe managers i
aim engage ftreliafo «renhB*Hih<*X-au ueiaaiJ, amt
theu have plays esDeeially written, in wbieh each
ot their leading aclors shall have a part suited to
his peculiar powers.
The leading actors receive from fifty dollars to
one hundred dollars per week. Ohe other salaries vary from fifteen dollarsto forty dollars per
week. Salaries for womeu are about half, or pet-
haps two-thirds ot what are paid to men holding
