EPITAPHS.
The New York Eyening Post prints the following selection of epitaphs "adapted to the prevalent causes of death :"—
'*A sudden pitch
From a.misplaced switcli,
Laid me dead in this ditch."
"Off the track the engine rushed—
Some were drowned, and I was crushed."
What is lite? 'Tis but a vision.
Here I died by a collision ;
Twenty more died by the same.
Verdict—'-Nobody to blame."
- "Sister, mother, aunt, and mo
Were run over. Here we be.
We should have had time to mizzle
Had they blown the engine's whistle."
Sweeping round a curve
Whose outer flexture bordered an abyss,
Tlie ears were canted down the precipice
And seven of us killed. But what of tbat?
'Twas the curve did it, and the engineer,
Being ou a bender, was excused.
"Train-borne traveler rushing by,
As thou paesest, wipe thine eye,
Sere a car well filled with freight
Killed sixteen and wounded eight ;
For a moment, frieuds, be weepers,
As you pass the railroad sleepers
You may share our fate—why uot J
Ere you reach the next depot."
"Here are deposited the bones,
(.The flesh being torn off.)
Of an unknown maD,
vr \,riT J?V""-1d™L blind »nil UpjA. ,
Neglected to obey the customary signals,
And was run over as a punishment
For his contumacy.
The engineer promptly stopped the engine
After it bad cut the body in two,
And, with most exemplary humanity,
Conveyed the remains to an adjacent wood shed
Where all means of resuscitation were tried,
But alas 1
The vital spark had tied.
For the humanity they displayed,
The engineer aud signal men
Were presented by the company
With a service of plate.
Go thou and do likewise."

We grow "lali corn" in America. The world is
beginning to find it out. Every year brings the
fact more and more home to the perceptive and digestive faculties of all civilized humanity. Like
all great truths, it did not gain credit at once.—
True, everybody sees it here with his own eyes,
but not so on the ofher side of the water. The
first accounts of the productiveness of our Western prair.ea were read by our Buckinghamshire
Tanners with about as much respect as the fish stories of the sailor Sinbad. It, took even the highest dignitaries of the lnnd a long time to get lair-
ly up to a level with Ihe actual fa-fit. Even at ihis
day there is an ear of corn in the British Museum
which enjoys a very distinguished consideration
as a curiosity. It divides attention, we do uot say
equally, but certainly fractionally, wilh the Nineveh Bull and the great Kohiiioer, It is a perfect
marvel to our good cousin John Bull ; and yet it
has but a very simple history, and it is not a very
extraordinary ear of corn, after all. It reached ita
present distinction something in this wise :
Li the month of January, 1847, at a certain dinner party rn Loudon, at w-hieh Lord John Russell,
Lord Morpeth, and many ofher distinguished persons were present, the conversation turned upon
tlie Irish famine ; and the remark was made by
Lord John that he rejoiced that so good a substitute forthe native breadstuff had been found in
Indian corn. Turning to Mr. Bates, the American
partner in tiie House of Baring Brothers, his
Lordship went on to say :
■' Why, Bates, some of Ihe coiis have twelve to
fourteen row of fj-ram on IhemV
To which Mr. Bates replied :
'* Yes, my lord, 1 have seen from twenty to twen-
iy-lour rows on a coh/'
" That is rare Yankeeism," was Ihe pleasant retort of the Premier ; and tlie whole company
shouted In approval.
Thu burst ol merriment over, Mr. Bafts bought
his pence by a wager of a dinner for the company
all round that he could produce such an ear.
-" Done?'' exclaimed Lord John, and the bet was
clinched.
The dinner passed off. Mr. Bates re/limed home,
but not entirely at ease. He hud done a strange
thing ; for the first time in his life he had made
an engagement he was not absolutely certain of
his ability to fulfil. He had misgiving that he had
rashly pledged the honor of his couutry. It had
been long since he had looked noon an Americnu
crib ; and however patiently he bad winnewed the
ccrrz-ucopia of his memory, he Inund lhat ihe cobs,
of his early days had gone glimmering, through
the lapse of time, among tlie things that were,
and were now so far off tliat he couldn't ciuut the
rows. He was as Blaulus would say, redactus ad
innilas—ln Yankee parlance, "hard up." But for
tune favnrs the brave.. It happened that a friend
of outs dropp'd in, the next day, at the counting
house of the Barings. Mr. Bates, wilh brighten
ing face, hailed him, and made known his diffi
culiy.
" You are safe," was the response ;
get bome, you shall have even a big
you have promised."
Our friend G soon returned, and straightway wrote fo Messrs. Rogers & Reynolds, of Lafayette, Ind., telling ihem the story, and begging
them, for the honor of the country, to come to the
rescue, and furn the tables on Lord John, showing
them Whftt Yankees could do.
In the July following. Mr. G. received, by express, from Laf:yette, a nicely arranged box, con-
taing six ears of horse-tooth corn, two of wliich
had twenty-nine rows, two thirty one, and two
thirtv-two. The box was forthwith addressed to
"J. Bates, Esq., eare of Baring Brothers Sr Co..
ship, by Black Ball Liue, cave of the Liverpool
House." It reached its destination, and Lord
John Russel, first Lord of the Treasury, third son

Cut the great and pervading evil of our paper currency is its unfavorable influence upon International trade—au influence overshadowing lhat of

QedSB of Rank among Pons.—A large proportion of the furs used in this country and elsewhere
are cured and dressed in London ; and although
Euglahd does not use expensive lurs. yet London
is the great fur mart of llie world. Tbe ermine Is
OOOeHtered the most precious, and next to that the'
Russian sable ; but the veal sables are rare, for according to our latest Russian statistics only 25,-'
000 skins of the beautiful little animals
duced during b
pro-
9 year in the Czar's Empire.
The prices paid Ior them twe almost fabulous—ft
fine set being worth $2,000. The sable for lining
oue of the Emperor's cloaks, exhibiled at the1
Worl'sFair in 1861, was valued at -£1,000. Next
to the sable in popularity and costliness, ranks
thc marten, or American sable—a fur rich and
highly priced, yet so fashionable as to be almost
universally sought for. The Hudson Buy sables
are next in value, and are almost expensive as the
Russian. Next is the mink, pre-eminent for beauty, wear aud durability. It is not, perhaps, so delicate-looking as the stone marten, or so artful-
looking as the African monkey, or so captivating
as the i-rmine, but it is quiet and graceful, and
more thrifty than them all. Besides the mink, tho
stone marl en. lhe litch, the Siberian squirrel and
the Persian and Russian lamb arc in daily use.
The skin ol the black bear forms the most magnificent sleigh robes—a good turn-out of which;
including robe and apron, costs upwards of $100.
The Canadian furs most esteemed in Europe, and
of which ihey have no representatives, are tho
black fox and the silver fox. These are found on-
I ly in the Hudson Bay Territory on the north shore
of the St. Lawrence. The raccoon and the musk-
rat are also conltnecl exclusively to this continent.
Iu England, valuable furs are but little worn—the
climate not requiring the lengthened wear oT
furs at any one time. The muskrat and the rabbit, and the American hare, dyed, form, therefore,
tbe hulk of the furs worn there. Tbe value of
those exported from tho Uuited Slates in 1857,
was $1,118,041.
Tini* Ol»*0AKEN Bucko.—Tbe following reminiscence of Samuel Woodworlh, possesses sufficient interest, we think, to warrant us in presenting it to our readers. It is a portion of a private

in the matter cannot be questioned. In reference
to the period of the production ol Uie "Old Oaken Bucket," the writer says: "Jt was written in
