Startlixg Occl-ruench—A SnaXS IN a Ladt:
Dress.—The London Court Journal says :
A. lady wbo had returned from India three years
ago, was the other day opening a drawer iu what
is termed a bullock trunk. To her amazement and
horror, a snake reared up his head ; her first impulse was to push the drawer to, but it was stiff
and heavy She ran down stairs, sore&raiug for
help. Her brother, who was iu the drawing-room
went lo her ussistance and preceded her up stairs.
The snake was not to be seen, and the geqtlaman
thought it must have been his sister's imagination,
so after some litlle time the search was given up.
Tbe following morning, a canary thai, always
hung in the lady's room wan missing, nnd o:i i
ing into tbe cage, the snake lay eui led up at ttie
bottom of it, and all that remained of iae bird by
its Bide. There was no difficulty iu destroying the
snake, and it was discovered to he what is termed
a green snake, whoj-re nature it is to make a spring
at the eye, when death immediately ensues. Tbe
marvel is bow the snake lived so loug mid the lady eseaped.

A Homely Song of Toll.
I passed by the door of tlie workshop—
The workmen thoy were three;
And ihey blithely sang while the anvil's clang
Made music to their glee ;
"Ho! for the strength to do!
Hoi for the will to dare !
Ho! for the patience lonij and true,
That buttles want and cure !
Wc view not with hatred or envy
The lords of sloth and ease ;
Bnc may heaven forefend that our sons should end
In filing things lifee these.
What are they but tares
That fall before tlie plough ?
And what tbe diamond's beauty wears
To Fwcat ou labor's brow ?
The sluggard muy sicken of pleasure,
VMid resets of gay delight ;
Eut we find our wealth in llie pulse of health
And onr wnuee in appetite.
And home is doully sweet.
To men who seek but humble cheer,
And earn the bread they eat.
Wo would not abide in a palace,
To sleep 'twlxt doubt and fear ;
We would never sup from a prince's cup, ■
To taste the widow's tear.
Wo Would not Stop to strike
A neighbor his s-poil ;
We think, and feel, and share alike,
In brotherhood of toil.
The earth has enough for her children,
But she loves the sturdy heart:
And she says tliat all may be free from thrall
If each will beat his part.
Then let us live content,
To learn in Nature's school,
That riches are the accident,
And labor Is the rule I"
I passed by the door of the workshop,
And lift niy cap in the air,
To the Strength and Will, and the Patient Skill
That have their dwelling there.
Ho ! for the strength to do !
Ho! for the will to dare!
Ho! for the-patience, long and true,
That, buttles want, and care.

The Scotsman fays: "'A very significant compliment to Mr. Gladstone's oratory, and a very
striking incident in itself, appears not to have been
marked by our London contemporaries. We mean
the presence of Lord Brougham within the walls
of the House of commons for the lirsttime during
very nearly thirty years ; that is, since he left it
iu 1830, to become Lord Chancellor. It is pretty
well known that Lord Brougham left, the House of
Commons to preside over the House of Lords,
witb the utmost pain and reluctance ; that his own
most earnest desire was, uot to accept auy oflice
which necessitated the abdication of his position
as member for Yorkshire, and that he took a position nominally and titulariy higher only at the
most urgent entreaty and virtual command of his
party. Since his removal, he has never once been
known to enter as auditor within those walls
Friday night, for the first time, he overcame this
remarkable reluctance, and then, too, for the first
time, it is understood, he heard heard llie man who
now occupies the position he himself so long held,
unrivaled and undisputed—the greatest orator in
the British House ot Commons. Lord Brougham
was seen fo listen intently during* the whole four
hours during which Mr. Gladstone spoke, and is
known to haye expressed the highest admiration
of the speech, as a masterpiece of clear aud skillful statement and persuasive rhetoric.
Royalty Visiting Canada,—It is now defiuifely
understood that His Royal Highness Albert Edward Saxe-CoburgGotha, the Prince of Wales aud
heir to the throne of Great Britain, will visit the
loyal subjects in the Provinces in the first week in
June. Great preparations [are making for his reception. The precedents lor this visit are found
in the advent ot Prince William Henry—aftei«
wards King William the Fourth—some seventy-
five years ago, in company with Captain, after,
wards Lord Nelson ; aud the Duke of Kent, father
of Queen Victoria. Tlie ostensible visit of England's future ruler is to officiate in placing the lust
stone of the Victoria Bridge over the St. Lawrence at Montreal. He will probably visit some
portions of our territory, and be lionized cxten-
sh ely.

The Mobile Tribune amusingly checks off the incidents of Tennyson's poem, for which be was paid
ten pounds a line. For instance, the opening costs
$750 ; a passage in whicli a wife asks her husband
to forgive a man, costs $550 ; the husband rates
his reply at $800 ; and the upshot of tbe whole
matter is, that the good woman sings the baby to
