The Sewing Machine.
Get one ! Don't say uo ! Which did you get?
One of the kind to opeu and shut ?
Own it or hire if. How much did you pay?
Does it go with a crank or treadle ? Say,
I'm a single man, and somewhat green,
Tell me about your tjewlng machine.
Listen, my hoy, and hear all about it;
I don't know what I should do without it.
I've owned ono now for more than a year,
And I like it so well, I call " my dear ;"
'Tis the cleverest thing lhat ever was seen,
This wonderful family scwiug machine.
It's none of your angular Wheeler thing?,
With steel shod beak and iron wings ;
Its work would both or a hundred of his,
And is worth o, thousand '. Indeed it is ;
And has a way—you needn't stare—
Of combing aud braiding its owu black hair 1
Mine is not one of those stupid affairs
That stands in a corner with whatnots and chairs.
And makes that dismal, headachy noise,
Which all the comforts of sewing destroys ;
No rigid contrivance of lumber aud steel,
Rut one with a uatural spring in the heel.
Mine is one of the kind to love,
And wears a shawl and a soft kid glove ;
Has the merriest eye and a daiuty foot,

"Perhaps it would interest some of your readers
to know wby lbe election of Pennington, of New
Jersey, as Speaker, gave such satisfaction in Lexington. I think it was either in 1845 or 18+G, that
Henry Clay became embarrassed to such an extent
that he had to mortgage Ashland. In the mean
time a movement had been started in New Orleans
by some of Mr. Clay's friends, that they would pay
his debts and relieve him from his embarrassments
nud Mr. A. H. Trotter, tho agent of the ^Northern
Bauk in Now Orleans, was sent east tocouferwith
Mr. Clay's friends. The consequence was, that
about S^O.000 were subscribed, and the Hon. Wm.
Pennington was sent to Kentucky with the money,
and came to Lexington without scarcely any person knowing him. He walked iuto the Northern
Bank, and asked for Mr. Scott, the cashier of the
banlt, and upon being shown that gentleman, asked
if there were not several notes of Mr. Clay's that
were due in a few days, and was answered that
there were. Mr. Scott was requested to give the
whole amount of Mr. Clay's indebtedness, which
waa doue, and a draft on one of lhe NewYork
banks was handed him, and Mr. Pennington lelt
the bank with all Mr. Clay's notes paid. Tn a few
days Mr. Clay came to town to airangv for a renewal ol the notes if possible, and was shown in
the side room of the bank. After fitting a few-
minutes, he asked Mr. Scott if there could be any
time. Mr. Scolt looked at Mr. Clay to see if he
was not jesting, and finding that he was not, told
hiin that a gftf-ftreaiaq from New Jersey had called
yeuterday and paid all liis indebtedness. Mr. Clay
started when Mr. Scott spoke, looked at him a IVw
tonds, burst Jinto ti-urs and left thfl bank overtimed. No man ever had ench friends, Such,

An angel she was, I haven't a doubt,
Though I never discerned her wiugf.;
But it is lair to presume there are angels about
Unencumbered with any such things ;
It ia plensaut, besides; and, wherever we go,
Though our hearts may be ever so cold,
Of all things, to be watched by sweet wuinaa, you
know,
Is the green of our life—and its gold!
She had eyes of tx pure and brilliant blue.
And of course she had golden hair ;
And the pearls ofher preity mouth shone through
The murmuring roses there ;
You would love the snow ol her gentle breast,
And the light ol her gentle brow,
And her little hands—and ail the rest
That I caunut mention now !
In the innocent days that are wasted and gone,
She was gentle and true to me ;
And still in my soul that love bums OQ—

But the angel had wings, after all, and she flew
Far away o'er the pitiless tide ;

Cotton Bales at tlie Battle of Snv Or If an 8.
The Louisville Journal says : Did Gen. Jackson
use cotton hales to defend the American line"!: at
the battle ol' New Orleans? This is aunounced by
tho Delta iu giving aa account of an incident
with which the name of the late Gen. Plauche was
connected, aud whieh, having been made the text
of one of the most invincible errors that has ever
crept into history, is a striking illustration of the
difficulty of arresting a false statement whieh happens to interest the fancy of mankind. Nothing
was ever more transparently absurd than the idea
which is embodied in nearly all the histories*, poems, aud pictures relating tothe battle of New
Orleans, than the assertion that the mound behind
which Jackson's army was entrenched, was composed ol cotton bales. The Delta says the only
basis of this story was the attempt ol some young
soldiers, in the rivalry which sprang up after they
had occupied the Hue of Rodriguez canal, to increase the height and breadth of the parapet iu
front of them by throwing in a lew cotton bales.
Others, too, were used to form embrazures for the
guns. These bales had been thrown out of a flat-
boat, which had eome down to Jackson's camp
with flower and pork aud other supplies, mid were
lying on the levee. They were a portion of a lot
which had been consigned to Major Plauche, aud
had been sold.by him to Vincent Nolle. The speculative efforls of the latter financier no doubt contributed to give form and currency to this story
He set up a preposterous claim for this cotton alter the war, and to maintain It. set on foot the story of the great service it had rendered. We are
pleased to see lhat iu a recently published and
highly spirited poetical description of the battle
of the Sth of January, by Thomas Dunn English,
this vulgar notion is very effectually disposed of—
No cotton bales before us,
Some'fool that story told us;
Built from the swampy mold.
Major Plauche, by the orders of General Jackson, os soon aa it was discovered that a few hales of
cotton had beeu used in making the parapet, and
that they greatly endangered the strength of the
works, and exposed the ammunition to explosion
by the flying particles of burning lint, had the
bales taken out ai.d thrown into the river.

The Telegram has published the following particulars relative to a massacre of Indians in and
near the vicinity of Humboldt Bay :
It appears that a party of farmers and graziers,
residing around the Bay, annoyed at the frequent
instances of running off stock by the Indians,
formed a secret society for their extermination.
On Sunday morning, Feb. 26th, between 3 and
4, a.m., a party of abont thirty men from Eel river
crossed over to Indian Island, and massacred some
forty Indians, men, women and children—butchering them with axes ar.d knives. Indian island is
situated in the bay. opposite Eureka, and is about
a Quarter of a mile from that place Eight or ten
Indians escaped the massacre, and made their way
to Eureka, where they placed themselves under
the protection ofthe citizens. A party of the latter immediately proceeded to the island, where
they found thirty six butchered in cold blood—
among them, several inhuits only tx tew weeks old.
No (race of the murderers could be found, except
the remains of their victims.
At about the same hour of the above massacre
another party of white men attacked an Indian
camp at Table Bluff, a few miles below tho entrance
to Humboldt Bay, where they slaughtered about
forty men, women and children.
It is thought by the citizens that, at the same
time, the Indian encampments on Eel River, Bear
River, and Mattelo Valley, were attacked ; it being generally supposed that the massacre was preconcerted, and simultaneous throughout the entire country.
The citizens of Eureka and around thojiay were
bitter in their feelings towards those engaged in
this slaughter, aud anxious to bring them to pun
ishmeot.

Bowie KsiFE.—The belief that Wm. Bowie was
the inventor of the knife which bears his name, is
erroneous. A gunsmith by the name of Black,
wbo was famed ia (he early settlement of Arkansas for the superiority ofhis rifles and butcher
knives, waa tbe inventor. Bowie had contracted
with Black for a flue target gun, which was to excel anything in the Territory, and while in the
shop one day Buwie asked Black to make a good
butcher knife, regardless of expense. Black took
Id mill-saw file aud forged it into a knife of
peculiar sliape—tempered it by a process known
only to himself, and burnished it so that it reflected like a mirror. The hilt was mounted with gold
and silver, of beautiful workmanship—the sheath
was tastefully decorated with the same metals, and
on the blade was engraven the words '-Bowie's
knife ;" whence tbe name by which this terrible
weapon is now known. Bowie was very proud of
bis knife, and became very expert in its use, (it
would cut a spike nail as if it were a straw) and
took great delight iu exhibiting his prowess to
both friends and enemies; which caused the de-
iand to be so great that Black forged both night
and day, and grew rich in a fow years. He then
confided the secret to two journeymen, and retired
from business, and weut into some wild speculation, in which he lost all bis money.
When the writer of this article last saw him, he
had lost bis eyesight, and a few months afterwards
be died a raving maniac, declaring that he had
murdered every person who had fallen by that
bloody weapon, ana tnat ins oiinuness was a visitation from God in consequence.—Marysville Express.
Henry IV. unil the Number 14.
The following has been translated from the
French. It presents two of those curious coincidences of number, name and event, which now and
again occur in the lives of some people—serving
to Bhow how much of hpparaut order aud agreement sometimes comes out of chance :
"The name of Henry IV. of France, ''Henry de
Bourbon,'' is composed of 14 letters ; that prince
was born 14 centuries, 14 decades, and 14 years
after Christ; he waB born on tho 14th of December, and died on the 14th of May: by adding

{0.) Herald, of June 27, 1833. It relates to an
incident in Daniel Webster's visit to the West,
where he was the guest of Hon. Thomas Ewin,
" As Messrs. Webster and Ewing were wending
their way to Circleville, when about seven miles
from the town, their passage was intercepted by a
tree, which had recently lallen across the read,
and whicb au honest yeoman was leisurely cutting
out. They surveyed the premises, to see how the
difficulty might be overcome. Our knight of the
axe not knowing eilher of tbe distinguished Senators, congratulated himself on the timely arrival
ol two such hale and uble bodied men to his assistance, aud very frankly advised them, as the best
means ol overcoming the difficulty, to get down
from tbeir carriage and aid him in the removal ol
the obstruction.
"Pleased with thu republican plainness of the
suggestion, and finding the man's strength inadequate to the task in hand, they followed the advice. Mr. Ewing first took the axe, and wielded
it with effect, as he does his arguments in the Senate anil nt "*■= '-■• "J- ■■•"■* mf)V-~J *■*- *"■'•■ ***-*,

'•You can't be doing your best, now, sir? You

way cleared, our travelers resumed their journey,
and left tho countryman blessing his stars that
they had been directed that way (which was off

The London Timet, in an editorial, explains the
present position of the Sau Juan difficulty. It
says, we have reason to think that the proposals
made to the Americans are such as may lnii'ly satisfy both countries. Instead of standing out (or
the Rosario channel and the whole group of Island?1, as against the Deharo channel and none of
them, a third channel is proposed for the bounda
ry line, which will not only evade the two disputed courses, but will leave tbe Americans in possession of the largest share of the disputed territory. This channel, in its course, cuts off the Island of San Juan alone to the west, and consequently leaves us with tins island alone, while
the Americans will retain the remainder So considerable, in fact, is the concession thus made,
that it reasonably suggests a little compensation,
and we believe the American government will be
asked to give us the whole of a certain coast and
headland which the forty-ninth parallel now cuts
in two, and we do hope this reasonable proposal
will be accepted.

AVasiiinotom, Feb. 12.—Private letters received
here state that the Kansas Legislature has abolished slavery in that Territory by an overwhelming
vote. This terrifies Douglasites. If Gov. Medary

the Legislature will pass it over his head, and tha
people will banish him.
The assault of Edmundson upon Hickman, Is

and weakened by a recent attack of blood-spitting,

Feb. 13.—Tlie contest in "Virginia between Wise

appear, however, that the former has the best
chance.
Several Democratic Senators were not at the
adjourned causns, held witb a view to adopt tbe
resolution upon the slavery issue, which should bo
supported as a party measure. Of the Senators
absent were Messrs. Mason, Hunter, Hammond,
and Johnson of Tennessee. Four hours were consumed in discussions of the point asserting the
justice of Congressional action to protect slavery
in the Territories. Mr. Saulshury moved that it
was inexpedient to adopt the resolution***. This
motiou was supported by Senators Cliiigniaii and
Tombs, who were opposed by Messrs, Gwin, Fitch,
Bright and Lane. Mr. Douglas opposed the adoption of any resolutions in advance of the meeting
of the Charleston Convention, and declared for
the Cincinnati platform without change, and argued against legislation iu relation to slave property in the Territories, precedent to any action of
the Supreme Court as to the power of the Territorial Legislatures, Most of the Senators said
nothing. The resolutions were finally referred to

New loss., Feb. 18.—The Tribune says the
agreement between Com. Vanderbilt and the Pacific Mail Company had not been actually Bigned
at a late hour thia afternoon, but there were only
a few unimportant details to arrange, and little
doubt was felt that the signatures of both partie8
will be attached to-night. The onlj question, wa
believe, unsettled, was that of the division of the
treasure freights between tbe Atlantic and Paoillo
companies. Mr. Vanderbilt demand;) 36 per cent-
and the Pacific Mail Company offer 30 per
centum. Tbis, however, involves tho questiou of
sodjc $15 000 per annum, and is not likely to break
up the negotiation.
The scheme of the arrangement, as far as made
pnblic, is substantially as stated. The Pacific mail
with the exception of the Champion for $750,000,
of which $50,000 is paid in Pacific Mail stock, at
par, aud $250,000, cash. The Champion is either to
be taken by the Paeilic Mail Company in exchange
for the St. Louis, or $'.£50,000 in cash. Mr.Vander-
bilt is to be paid $50,000 to bring her back to the Atlantic. The Vanderbilt and Roberta steamers are
to do the whole Atlantic service, aud the Mail
Company the service on the Pacific, the revenue
of the line to be divided SO per cent to the Atlantic and 70 per cent, to the Pacific, with the excep.
tion of the freight on treasure.
It is not proposed to put passenger fares back to
the old rates, but they will be materially advanced.
It is believed that by this combinatiun of the Interests of Com. Vanderbilt and the Mail Company,
a very profitable business can be done, without
danger of any opposition line being established.
Trial iit Juitr.—Lord Campbell, tho Lord
Chancellor of England, has renewed his hitherto
ineffectual effort to induce Parliament to abolish
that principle of the trial by jury which requires
tho unanimity of the jurors. Parliament haB already limited the application of the trial by jury,
by enacting lately that in some cases the decision
of a judge or magistrate may supercede that of a
jury on questions of pure fact. The Lord Chancellor would go much farther, and advocate tbe
passage of a law, providing lhat if the jury in a
civil action cannot agree, after having deliberated
a certain time, the verdict of a certain number of

Among those whose places were often vacant,
was one man who cared but little for the sanctity
of tbe holy day, or the reproof of the minister.
On taking his usual Monday morning rounds,
Dr. P— was sure to visit Mr. C—, as we will call
him. Said the good man,
"Why were you not at church yesterday?"
"Had other business to attend to," was the blunt
reply.
"Mr. C," Baid the clergyman solemnly, "there
will be no preaching in hell."
"Well, it won't be for the want of ministers,"
was the quick rejoinder.
This was a hard cut, and the good old Doctor
shook his head, aud went on his way ruminating,
