The Defeated Oatididate.
Transfixed he Stood within (lie hall,
When the result #a*> heard ;
He frowned upon the voters all,
Yet uttered not a word.
Bel rayed, forsaken by his friends—
On whom he most relied ;
Hie ballot he in tatters rends.
Then sat liim down and cried.
That day he would have oot a pile
That ha the race would win ;
He'd ask a hundred up to smile—
Spent all his funds for glo,
He had been promised the support
Of over half the crowd —
Hi,*? knowledge bad been dearly bought,
No wonder he felt cowed.
Just forty votes ! 'twas sad to hear
The Secretary read,
It fell like thunder on hi* ear—
They could not know his need.
Their broken faith tiiey would repent,
And so he swore it there
That he would spend his last red cent,
But what he would get square.
Last year he got but two votes more,
Than in the recent fight ;
He owned he felt a little sore,
But said " things hain't went right."
Next year you'll Iind him in tlie ring,
And find him counted out,
Again he'll swear it ain't the thing,"
But he'll run again, no doubt.

IRVIXO'S DREAD OF BLVXKR SPKKCII-MAKING.
At tho meeting of the Massachusetts Historrcal
Society, to notice the death of Washington Irving,
Professor Fclton, of Harvard College, delivered au
eloquent aud genial obituary address, in which w(
find the following reminiscence of Irving's aversion to making a dinner speech :—
Allow me, Mr. President, to recall two or three
little incidents, that may servo to illustraty some
of tho aspects of his character. The time when I
saw fhe most of Mr. Irving was in the winter of
18-12, during the visit of Charles Dickens to New
York. I bad known this already distinguished
writer in Boston and Cum bridge, and while passing nome weeks with my dear and lamented friend
Albert Sumner, I renewed my acquaintance with
Mr. Dickens, often meeting him io the brilliant
literary society which theu made New York a
most agreeable resort. Halleck, Bryant, Washington Irving, Davis, and others, scarcely less attractive by their genius, wit and social graces,
constituted a circle scarcely to be surpassed anywhere in the world. I passed much of the time
with Mr. Irving and Mr. Dickens ; and it was delightful to witness the cordial intercourse of the
young man, in the fla«h and glory of his yon thf ul
genius, and hia elder compeer, then iu tho assured
possession of immortal renown. Dickens said, in
his frank, hearty manner, that from his childhood
he had known tho works of Irviug, and that, be
fore he thought of ooinlagjto this country, he had
received a letter from him, expressing the delight
he felt in reading the story of Little Nell, and
from that day they bad shaken hands, autograph-
Ically, across the Atlantic.
Great and varied as was the genius of Mr. Ir.
ving, there was ono thing he shrunk with a comical terror from attempting, and that was a dinner
npoech. A groat dinner, however, was to bo given
to Mr. Dickens ia New York, as one had already
been given in Boston ; and it waB evident to all
that no mau but Washington Irving could bi
thought of to preside. With all his dread of mak'
ing a speech, he was obliged to obey the universal
call, and to accept the painful pre-eminence.
imw nun uaiiy uunng tne interval of preparation,
cither at the lodgings of Dickens, or at dinner or
evening parties. I hope I showed no want of sympathy withjhis forebodings, but I could not help
being amused with the tragi-comical distress which
tho thought of that approaching dinner caused
him.. His pleasant humor mingled with the real
dread, and played with the whimsical horrors of
his own position with an in-resistible drollery.—
Whenever it was alluded to, his invariable answer
waH. "I shall certainly break down!:'—uttered in
a half melancholy tone, the ludicrous effect of
which it ia impossible to describe. He was haunted
as if by a nightmare, faud I could only compare
his dismay to that of Mr. Pickwick, who was so
alarmed at the prospect of leading about that
" dreadful horse" all day. At length, the long
expected evening arrived ; a company of tho most
eminent persons, from all professions and every
walk in life, were assembled, and Mr. Irving took
tho chair. I had gladly accepted an invitation,
making it, however, a condition that I should uot
he called upon to speak—a thing I then dreaded
quito as much as Mr. Irving himself. The direful
compulsions of life have since helped mo to overcome in some measure tho post*pnindial fright.—
Under the circumstances—-an invited guest, with
no impending speech, I sat calmly and watched
with interest the impending sceno. I had the honor to be placed next out ono to Mr. Irving, and
tho pleasure of sharing iu his conversation, Ho
had brought tho manuscript ofhis speech and laid
It under the plate. 'I shall certainly break down'
he repeated over and over again. At last the moment arrived- Mr. Irving rose, and was reeeived
with deafening aud loud continued applau=e,which
by no means lessened his appreheusiou, He began
In his pleasant voioe ; got through two or three
sentences pretty easily ; but in the next hesitated,
and after one or two attempts gavo it up, with a
graceful allusion to tha tournament, and the troops
of knighta all armed for the fray, ended with the
toast, "Charles Dickens, tho guest of the uatii
"There," said lie, as lie reHumed his seat under a
repetition of the applause which had saluted his
rising, "there, I told you I should break down,
and I've done it." Thero certainly never was
made a shorter after-dinner speech; I doubt if
there ever was a more suocossful one. Tho manuscript seemed to bo a dozen or twenty pages ; but
the printed ppaech was not as many lines. I suppose that manuscript m ty bo still in existence •
and if eo, I wish it might he published. Mr. Ir-
ving often spoke wilh a good humored envy ofthe
felicity with which Dickens always acquitted hira-

SACRAMENTO, January 18. 1800.
To the Honorable the Assembly of California:
I herewith transmit for the considuratiou of
your honorable body the report of Adjutant-General Kibbe, with the documents relating to Hie
late expedition commanded by him iu suppressing
Indian hostilities in Tuliamu and adjoining counties, the aggregate expenses of which, according
to the report, amount to the sum of $$9,468 i'i.
While I admit the necessity which led to this expedition, and freely acknowledge the eminent
services rendered by the officers and men composing the command, the expenses, so large iu
amount, would seem to demand a rigid scrutiny.
if it be intended to pay these expenses by direct

Expenses of this nature are legally chargeable

The noblest cud loftiest of the Gothic edifices

day scarcely altered—the sharpness of outline, of
angle, of "the minute tracery, appear as perfect as though cut yesterday. Its altitude is
more than 400 feet. Its upper structures are ol
iron bars, upon which are strung sculptured
blocks of stone, so minutely carved, slightly poised, tbat the tower viewed from tho city below or
irom the bastions beyond, rcsmnbles Mechlin lace.
Time, during so many long years, seems to have
detracted nothing from its beauty, but solely to
have deepened its rich russet hue, which contrasts
well with the grim, quaint Flemish houses, clustering around its base. Not only bas time been
benign, but hostile armies have shown respect,
and the victorious soldier in his drunken delirium, lbe fanatic iconoclast in his defacing Jury,
awe-s tri eke n at its majestic proportions, have
Withheld their destroying hands. It still towers
iu all its pristine grace above the mists of the
Scheldt, and tlie clear tones ol its carillons come
floating dowu through the air, to the forlorn and
decayed old city below, as nieilow and as sweet as
when Antwerp was the pride of the Netherlands—
" Of joy the sojourn, of wealth the mart.!'
That of Strasburg is the lol'Mestof human works,
rising 408 feet above the pavement, 24 feet higher
than tbe great pyramid of Egypt, and 120 feet
higher than the lantern of St. Paul's. The construction is similar to that of Antwerp, being a
network of iron bars and sculptured stone, whilst
the openings are so broad, the connections so del.
icate and thin, that the adventurous climber,
mounting its spiral ladders, fears lest he may fall
through the wide lattices down into the city below. Its antiquity is a century greater than the
shaft of the Netherlands, which it closely rivals
in architectural beauty. Those edifices, to be
rightly appreciated, must he viewed at sunset,
when the departing sunbeams are lingering on
their summits, whilst the lesser spires and domes
are mantled in twilight—it is then that the rare
sculpture, the airy proportion, tlie appalling altitude, appear iu all their glory—it is then that the
spires rising above the gloom ofthe grimmed,
stained cities, illumined with the rich, golden sunset hues, have not the aspect of belonging to tbe
material world—it is then that the grandeur of
Gothic architecture entrances and overpowers the
soul.

It has seldom fallen lo the lot of man to see
such amazing vicissitudes of fortune, affecting
himself and family, as has been witnessed by the
person whose name heads ihis article. Tho dreams
of romance have been excelled by the actual realities of his life. He is the only surviving brother
of the illustrious Napoleon, aud was born in 1784.
So long has the latter been a historical character,
that ot first it appears almost impossible that the
reat conqueror, who, after running the most re-
turkable career of twenty years that the world
■er saw, terminates it by his death nearly forty
years ago, ou the rock of St. Helena, should have
a brother now occupying a high position iu the
French Government,
Of all his family, lie alone is permitted to witness both their remarkable rise in prosperity and
fortune, and their subsequent downfall, and their
equally wonderful return to the height of power
and influence. His recollection goes oack to the
time when the family of Bonaparte w»b not known
beyond the range of a few friends, and when ita
members of private life were compelled to struggle in obscurity with penury and misfortune. Ha
can recollect his mother, a widow with a large family ot children upou her hnndB, mrnl wbon it required ft stern conflict to obtaiu for Ihem the necessary means of subsistence. He was in early
manhood when the genius of liis brother first burst
upon the world and opened to his relatives tho
visions of power and splendor that never, oven in
lhe wildest flights of imagination, had they previously entertained. He saw his brothers aud sisters placed by tlie magic wand ol Napoleon, upon
nearly ali the thrones of Europe, and decked with
diadems and coronets.
For the first time in the history of Europe was
the extraordinary spectacle observed of a family
of private citizens parceling thrones and crowna
among themselves, as if they had been the merest
baubles. Jerome was thirty-one years old wheu
the dark clouds of misfortune and disaster gathered black aod heavy over the fortunes of his family
and when the storm eame that swept them from
their heights of grandeur and glory, into the depth
of humiliation and debasement. Ho saw tbo star
of tho Bonaparte destiny, so often apostrophised
by Napoleon, sink beneath the clouds apparently
never to rise again. For nearly forty years tho
blackness of night enveloped it. Not one ofthe
original family saw this long night to a close save
Jerome ; as, before it again emerged from fhe political horizon, they were all deceased. Jerome
has had the remarkable felicity to see the fortunes
oi his family re-established under a new Napoleonic dynasty,
One of ihe chiefs of the old empire, he holds a
similar position in the new. lie directs the coun-
selofthe Regent Empress Eugenie as ho had
previously done those of Maria Louise. A great
historical monument of the past is this old Jerome,
who personally has witnessed the most remarkable
family history that the world has ever seen. It is
not yet finished. He has not yet attained tha
mots extreme old age, and it is possible that Jie
may see events affecting his family quite as startling and remarkable as those which have hitherto
characterized his career.—Cincinnati Inquirer,

IRVIXO'S DREAD OF BLVXKR SPKKCII-MAKING. At tho meeting of the Massachusetts Historrcal Society, to notice the death of Washington Irving, Professor Fclton, of Harvard College, delivered au eloquent aud genial obituary address, in which w( find the following reminiscence of Irving's aversion to making a dinner speech :— Allow me, Mr. President, to recall two or three little incidents, that may servo to illustraty some of tho aspects of his character. The time when I saw fhe most of Mr. Irving was in the winter of 18-12, during the visit of Charles Dickens to New York. I bad known this already distinguished writer in Boston and Cum bridge, and while passing nome weeks with my dear and lamented friend Albert Sumner, I renewed my acquaintance with Mr. Dickens, often meeting him io the brilliant literary society which theu made New York a most agreeable resort. Halleck, Bryant, Washington Irving, Davis, and others, scarcely less attractive by their genius, wit and social graces, constituted a circle scarcely to be surpassed anywhere in the world. I passed much of the time with Mr. Irving and Mr. Dickens ; and it was delightful to witness the cordial intercourse of the young man, in the fla«h and glory of his yon thf ul genius, and hia elder compeer, then iu tho assured possession of immortal renown. Dickens said, in his frank, hearty manner, that from his childhood he had known tho works of Irviug, and that, be fore he thought of ooinlagjto this country, he had received a letter from him, expressing the delight he felt in reading the story of Little Nell, and from that day they bad shaken hands, autograph- Ically, across the Atlantic. Great and varied as was the genius of Mr. Ir. ving, there was ono thing he shrunk with a comical terror from attempting, and that was a dinner npoech. A groat dinner, however, was to bo given to Mr. Dickens ia New York, as one had already been given in Boston ; and it waB evident to all that no mau but Washington Irving could bi thought of to preside. With all his dread of mak' ing a speech, he was obliged to obey the universal call, and to accept the painful pre-eminence. imw nun uaiiy uunng tne interval of preparation, cither at the lodgings of Dickens, or at dinner or evening parties. I hope I showed no want of sympathy withjhis forebodings, but I could not help being amused with the tragi-comical distress which tho thought of that approaching dinner caused him.. His pleasant humor mingled with the real dread, and played with the whimsical horrors of his own position with an in-resistible drollery.— Whenever it was alluded to, his invariable answer waH. "I shall certainly break down!:'—uttered in a half melancholy tone, the ludicrous effect of which it ia impossible to describe. He was haunted as if by a nightmare, faud I could only compare his dismay to that of Mr. Pickwick, who was so alarmed at the prospect of leading about that " dreadful horse" all day. At length, the long expected evening arrived ; a company of tho most eminent persons, from all professions and every walk in life, were assembled, and Mr. Irving took tho chair. I had gladly accepted an invitation, making it, however, a condition that I should uot he called upon to speak—a thing I then dreaded quito as much as Mr. Irving himself. The direful compulsions of life have since helped mo to overcome in some measure tho post*pnindial fright.— Under the circumstances—-an invited guest, with no impending speech, I sat calmly and watched with interest the impending sceno. I had the honor to be placed next out ono to Mr. Irving, and tho pleasure of sharing iu his conversation, Ho had brought tho manuscript ofhis speech and laid It under the plate. 'I shall certainly break down' he repeated over and over again. At last the moment arrived- Mr. Irving rose, and was reeeived with deafening aud loud continued applau=e,which by no means lessened his appreheusiou, He began In his pleasant voioe ; got through two or three sentences pretty easily ; but in the next hesitated, and after one or two attempts gavo it up, with a graceful allusion to tha tournament, and the troops of knighta all armed for the fray, ended with the toast, "Charles Dickens, tho guest of the uatii "There" said lie, as lie reHumed his seat under a repetition of the applause which had saluted his rising, "there, I told you I should break down, and I've done it." Thero certainly never was made a shorter after-dinner speech; I doubt if there ever was a more suocossful one. Tho manuscript seemed to bo a dozen or twenty pages ; but the printed ppaech was not as many lines. I suppose that manuscript m ty bo still in existence • and if eo, I wish it might he published. Mr. Ir- ving often spoke wilh a good humored envy ofthe felicity with which Dickens always acquitted hira- noif nn-«««», -: jn t[1(] (oilowing sprint; ARE YOU INSURED ?
