While all sweet sounds of evening on the breezo
Steal through the b1 umbering vine.
Thou gav'st the calm repose
That rests on all—tho air, tbe birds, the flowers,
The human spirit in its weary hour,
Now at tho bright day's close.
'Tis Nature's time for prayer ;
The silent praises of the glorious sky,
The eauh's orisons, profound and high,
To heaven tbeir breathings bear.
With them my soul would bend
Id bumble reverence at tby holy throne,
Trusting the merits of thy RoB alone
Thy sceptre to extend.
Ifl this day have striven
With thy blessed spirit, or havo bowed the knee
To aught of earthy in weak idolatry^
I pray to bo forgiven.
If In my heart has been
An unforgiving thought, or word, or look,
Though deep the malice which I scarce could brook,
Wash me from the dark sin.
Ifl have turned away
From grief and suffering which I might relievo,
Careless the cup of water e'en to give,
Forgive me, Lord, I pray.
And teach me how to feel
My sinful w and en tigs with a deeper smart,
And more ot merey and of grace impart,
My siufulness to heal.
Father! my soul would be
Pure as the drops ol eve's unsullied dew,
And the stars whose nightly course is irae,
So would I be to Thee.
Not for myself alone,
Would I these blessings of thy love implore,
But for each penitent the wide world o'er,
Whom thou has called thine own.
And for my heart's beat friend.-:,

Should o'er their path decline
The light of gladness, or of hope, or health,
Be thou their solace, and their joy and wealth,

And cleanse its depths from each impurity,

Geological Survey of California.
It must be apparent to every intelligent mind,
that a geological examination of California ia E
subject of more than ordinary importance. Wi
occupy a territory very diversified, and differing
ideologically from the other States of the Union.
Wehave nearly all the different formations that
the changes of the earth's surface have produced.
California presents a noble held for the geologist.
The Sierra Nevada on the east, with its rocks exposed by deep canons, or penetrated by tunnels,
or by the washing of miners, furnishes a liue opportunity for examination. A survey by au able
geologist of the Sierra Nevada would set at rest
many tbeuries of ibe formation of the gold deposits, and also ofthe gravel beds or ranges throughout the world.
Such a survey might not result in the discovery
of more gold, or give us auy direct benefit, but il,
":S a duty we owe to science. From science wc
bave reeeived many benefits iu our mining operations, and it is but just we should return them.—-
The gold bearing region has been pretty thoroughly examined for its treasures by practical
men, and although a geologist, might discover little of pecuniary benefit where metals may exist in
their ores, requiring a -feieniic examination to detect their presence. Iu such a case it is easy to
K-e the benefits that would follow a survey. But
it is not for that purpose that we wish lo see a
geological examination made. We have had s
preliminary survey by Prof. Tra*-*k, which proved
the existence of a vast number of valuable minerals in various parts of the State, some of them
found in great purity, and many of considerable
value. These discoveries, however, seem to have
attracted but little attention, as we hear nothing
of the production of the numerous minerals whose
presence was reported by him. A geological, accompanied by a topographical survey, would give
to the State an accurate map in whieh tbe dijl'er-
eut mineral regions could be plainly pointed
and a dividing line drawn between the mineral
and the agricultural lands. Ail the older States
ofthe Union have had their geological surveys,
which in many cases resulted advantageoualy to
the interest of the State, in all gave great satisfaction, and added much to the science of geology.
These surveys require several years in their accomplishment, and will certainly at some day be
made, consequently the sooner it Is commenced
the better.—Placerville Observer.
The President will submit fhe correspondence
to Congests at the opening of the session, aud will
ask for menus, money and men to enable him to
defend the rights of our country and uphold the
honor of its flag at all hazards ami to the last extremity.
The correspondent considers the return of Mr.
Dallas before bollidays or early in the session of
Congress as possible.
1 the
Wasihnutox, Nov 3.—There is nothing i
correspondence between onr Government and „Uf,
land to justify the least apprehension of any rupture resulting ironi the San Juau affair.
The administration has disclaimed having given
Gen. Harney any instructions to take exclusive or
military possession of Sau Juan island; but, in
case of such steps being taken, it is not disposed
to recede from it; while il will be ready to continue negotiations as to the disputed boundary.—
Lord Russell's letter ia not offensive ; and presents
no demand except to restore the joint occupation
before proceeding further. This ia declined here ;
but the correspondence continues amicably, and
the conviction is fully entertained that 5cott's
presence and investigation will remove all points
of embarrassment to the satisfaction of both sides.
The information here is conclusive that the importance of the island, as a military position or otherwise, has been greatly exaggerated.
Sinking of tdk Sacramknto Phiso"v Brio.—We
mentioned, says the Union, in our issue of Friday,
that in consequence of the formation of a sandbar adjacent thereto, the prison brig had been
sunkseveral feet by the head. About six o'clock
yesterday morning the officers were aroused by the
ery of the prisoners that the vessel was staking,
the water flowing in freely and partially flooding the cells between decks. Jn.Asim.ich as the vessel sunk sufficiently to admit water into the him
her holes forward, rendering it inadvisable to
continue the prisoners below, they admitted upon
deck, and there closely watched uutil about a
quarter to four oclock P. M., when they were transferred to the station house. They numbered in ail
thirty-throe prisoners, in eluding two females.—
Undoubtedly the prison brig—the old La Grange
—will become a second bark Sterling, and slick
to ber present location, and probably in a worse
plight than atpresent.until she shall havo been
blown asunder, and removed piecemeal, as was
her antetype.

In 1754 he was stationed at Alexandria with hia

Of the COfltest, Washington grew warm (for his
passions naturally were very powerful, though a
wise regard to duty, i e. honor and happiness soon
reduced them to prOPW command) and unluckily
said something to Mr. Payne, who, though but a
cub in 8l£B, was a Hon iu heart, elevated his sliil-

ground. News was soou carried to the regiment
lhat their colonel was murdered hy the mob! On

of lightning upon a magazine of gunpowder.—
In a moment the. whole regiment was under annu

been liberally plied with cold water, acids and vo-
latiles ; and, happily for Mr, Payne and his party,
was so far recovered as to go oui and meet hie en-
raged soldiers, who crowded round hiin with facea
of honest joy to see him alivo again. After thanking them for Una evidence of their atlaehinent 10
him, ho assured tbern that he was not hurt in the
least, and begged them by their love of him and
their duty, to return peaceably to their barracks.
As lot* himself, he went to his room, generously
chastising his passion, whieh had just, Mirnek but a
spark that had like to have thrown the wlioto
town in a tia::ie; and feeling himself the aggressor
of Mr. Payne, he resolved to make him the honorable reparation ot usking his pardon. No sooner
had he made this heroic resolution, than recovering that delicious gaiety which ever accompanies
good purposes In ft virtuous mind, he went to a
ball that night, and behaved as pleasantly aa
though nothing had happened. Early the next
morning he wrote a polite note of invitation to
Mr, Payne to meet him at the inn, Pnyne took it
Ior a challenge, and repaired to the inn in lull expectation ol smelling gunpowder. Put what x\-.vA
his surprise, on entering the chamber, to see, in
lieu ofa brace of pistols, a decanter of wine aud
a pair of glasses on the table. Washington rose to
meet him, and offering his hand, with a smile began: Mr. 'Payne, to err sometimes is nature; to

An act of such sublime M'ltue. produced its
proper clfects upon the mind of Mr. Payne, who,
from that moment, became flic mosc enthusiastic
admirer and friend ol Washington ; and, for his
sake, ready to charge up to a battery of two ami
forty pounders. 'Would our youth,' says tho narrator, 'but be persuaded to aet iu a style so correct and heroical, our papers would no longer
shock us with accounts of elegant young men
murdering each otiier ou false principles of honor ; by one desperate deed depriving themselvea

Wine-giiowt.vg in France.—Mr. Harry Hammond, a son of ex-Governor Hammond, of South
Carolina, bas lately visited the wine districts of
France, and examined the business of wine-growing, and he published (he knowledge thus acquired in a pamphlet. From this essay, we learn
that there are 5,200,0i)0 acres cultivated in vines
in France; that the vineyards are distributed
among "2,000.000 population; that the vineyards,
therefore, average two acres und a half each to
size; that the average yield of wine per acre ia
250 gallons, and that the average profit from good
vineyards Is about $7fi0 yearly. The best vineyard land iu France is worth $0,000 per acre. Notwithstanding the very high value of land, and tho
small quantity of wine produced- and the uncertainty of the crop, the vis-yard owners still expect to make $750 yearly per acre. Calilornia
has nothing lo fear from Competition with Franco
in tho wine business.
