Up in Podunk, where the thi3tle
Blooms, dies and rots;
Where the winter whirlwinds whistle
All around the lots—
Lives lhe slickest gal you ever
Saw in all your life;
Ankle like a blue beach leyer—
Voice like a fife.
As I sat by her couriin'
Culm and serene—
"With her apron she was sporliu',
Checkered aud clean.
Mingled was our hash together,
All day we sat,
A chawiu' gum iu wintry weather,
Happy as fat.
And I stuck to her like teasles,
Summer and fall ;
Hut she went oil' with measles,
Ankle aud all. *

NEW MEMORIALS OP DA1V1EL. "WEBSTER.
A new and very much improved edition of Mr.
Lanman's " Private Life of Daniel Webster" will
soon be in press, and the subjoined extract therefrom, which we have received irom the author,
will be read with pleasure,
IliWiog been, with brief intervals, nearly all his
life in the public service either iu Congress or the
Cabinet, Mr. Webster resided at the seat of Government more, perhaps, than in Massachusetts; mo
much indeed, and became thereby so identified
with Ihe society at Washington, that he got, during many years, to feel more at home there than
any where else; although his attachment to his
true home and his affections for the land of the
Pilgrims were deeply seated and sacredly cherished in his inmost heart. During liis long residence
in Washington, the twenty or thirty latter years
of It at least, there was no private individual
there with whom his relations of intimacy were no
close aa those with W. W. Seaton, Esq, It might
be added that there waa no one, perhaps, out of
his own tamiiy, to which he waa so much attached.
A part of almost every evening, when not engaged at home or elsewhere, he spent in the drawing room or sitting room of Mr. Seaton—with the
ladies of his family, or ttte a tetc with him, in
winter at the fireside, or in evening strolls in
summer.
Cognisant of this long and familiar intercourse,
and not doubting that it was the parent Of many
Iree and unstudied notes and letters between them,
the writer made inquiry of Mr. Seaton on the subject, aud found that, although he had given many to frieuds for autographs of the illustrious
statesman, he had preserved many ol familiar im
promptu notes of Mr. Webster, which were frankly
submitted to the writer. Several of them were
found highly characteristic and amusing, but he
was unwilling, for reasons thai may be readily
conceived, to permit them to be made public.—
After a deal ol importunity, however, he allowed
the writer to retain a few of the more playful,
which are now subjoined.
The first is brief, but as it relates to a state paper which made a great impression at the time, it
will be read with interest. The day before the
famous Hit/seman letter was transmitted to Congress, Mr. Webster sent it to Mr. Seaton to read.—
Alter it was relumed, and on the morning it was
to be sent to the Senate, it occurred to Mr. Seaton
lhat the ward "patch," as applied to a great empire, would appear undiplomatic, or beneath the
dignity of such a state paper, and tike au attempt
to be-little an adversary government, and there-
lore he despacbed a note to Mr. Webster suggesting, if not too lale, the substitution of another
word. He received by his messenger the following reply:
u The deed was done, before I received your
note* hut patch means a small piece cf ground,—
vide Webster,—vide Shakepeare, iu Hamlet.
D. W."
And with what exquisite grace did Mr. Webster,
in Ihe following epistle solicit fiom his friend a
present of choice wiue!
"Impart your portion to the poor,
" In money, and iu meat;
" And give the slavinir, hungry soul,
Of that which you do" —drink.
My Dear Sir—Vie look for Mr. Archer to
Although Mr. Webster's dinners were always all
that could be desired, his invitations were oftentimes quile original. Witneea the following for
two separate days :—
" My Dear Sir—A man in health, of a bright
and cheerful inoi nlng, generally feels happy after
what Lord Bacon calls *un apt breakfast/ Sucb is
nay condition at Ihe present moment. There is
coiisolatlon in an excellent herring, a cup. ot cot-
fee, and a piece of toast.
"I have not heard from Mr. Gales in answer to
a note I suit him yesterday. But I expect the
whole Intelligencer to dinner, to day. al 4 o'clock.
"Yours, truly, Daxl. Wkhstkb."
" .My Dear Sir—We are fl of ns here, who were
Of Genl. Harrison's Cabinet. We dine logelher
at my house, on Thursday at 5 o'clock. We have
voted you in as P. M. Genl. iu place of Mr. Gran-
g'-r; you must come. If you are engaged at
H "e or elsewhere, you must get off and emue
lo us. At is quite an u-icTpected matter of liu.si-
nemo. We can take uo excuse. Yours, D. W."
Hear him when sighing for a little recreation: —
" My Dear Sir— I shall be, inevitably, detain*
ed here, some days longer; so 1 find, and I am
tired. Cau we go shoot to-morrow f or drive! or
do anything? Is there any body to go withu-?
Pray invent something ifyou can. Pray invent
something—or I shall plunge. D. W.;'
But Mr. Webster's notes were not always frolicsome, as the two following, on totally dillernnl
subjects, will prove:—
J*N\ 1, »49.
" My Dear Sir—I rely on you lor to-morrow,
at 4 o'clock, 1 put the hour thus early in hopes of
catching Mr. Macready, lor an hour or two, before
he goes to bis Teadings.'
'* Huzza I'or Republican Liberty in France!—

Proper, preferred lo real, experienced, well-tried
talent and public virtue!
* 1 greatly lear trouble in Europe. Itis more
than an cvt-n chance, that war will break out, on
the Austrian question; and this French election
will add new fuel tothe popular beats, in Genua-
uy and Prussia. Yours, truly, D. Wkuster."
Nkw Yokk, March 21. -A0.
Dear Sir—I am a good deal beset here, for copies of my spech. by some friends, and shall be
equally so when I ranch Boston. Pray put niy
unhappy case before Mr. Grourard."
** i found a great panic heie. The article in
the National Intelligencer of Saturday struck like
a thunder bolt. It is regarded as doing the high
est credit to ihe paper, both for honest patriotism
and ability. The alarm is now subsiding, under a
coulideiil feeling that the Senate may be reiied

Some yean since, the old tomb, built partly of
brick, was much dilapidated.
In repairing it, or in making a new foundation
for the marble slab, the workmen came across
much rubbish, including old boots and shoes ; also
a tonibslone of one of Dr. Franklin's children,
bearing the following inscription : "Francis V.,

lhat lhe ground was al one time mui'.h lower than
it is at present, and that it was tilled up wilh refuse earth, Src., to form ils present level. The

By hard begging, and through the intercession
of Mr. Seaton, the writer has been enabled to pro-
re for his little book of agreeable perr-onalittes
the two following noles. addressed to ladies who

whom it was addrressed had been spending asocial evening at Mr. Webster's house, and on ac-

delivered with tlie bonnet, at tbe residence ol the

"My Dear Josephine—I lear you got a wetting,

well this morning, nnd without cold.
" I have demanded parlauce, wilh your Bonnet;
have asked it how many lender looks it haB noticed to be directed under it; what soft words it
has heard, close toils side; in what instance an
air of triumph has caused it to be tossed; aud
whether, ever, and when, it has quivered from
trembling emotions proceeding from below. But
it has proved ifself a faithful keeper of secrets,
and.wouid answer none of my questions. It only
remained lor me to attempt to surprise it into contusion, by pronouncing sundry names, one after
another. It P9Hred quite unmoved by most o°
these, but at the anparently nne.vpecied mentio'i

TIIK EXPLOUATIUN ANU DISCOVKIIY.
Most Interesting Report hy Capt. McClintock.
[From the London Times.]
On the Si of April our long projected spring
journeys were commenced; Lieul. llobson accompanied mc as far as Cape Victoria, each of us had a
Sledge drawn by four men, and mi auxiliary sledgo
drawn by six dogs. This was all llietorce we could
muster.
Belore separating, we saw two Esquimaux families
living out upon the ice in snow huts : Irom tlmin wo
learned tliat a second ship had been seen off King
William's Island, and tbat she drilted ashore on tba
fall of the same year. From this ship ihey had obtained a vast deal of wood and iron.
I now gave Lieut, llobson directions to search
for the wreck, and to follow up any traces he might
iind on King William's Island.
Accompanied by my own parly and Mr.Petersen,
I marched abng the east shore'of King William'*
Island, occasionally passing deserled snow huts,
but without meeting natives till the 8th of Mav,
when off Gape Norion we arrived at a snow village
containing about thirty inhabitants, They gathered
about us without the slightest appearance ol fear or
sh ness, although none bad ever seen living white
people beiore. They were most willing to communicate all tlkir knowledge and barter all iheir goods,
but would have stolen everything had they not been
closely watched. Mjiiiv more relies of our countrymen were obtained ; we could not carry away all
we might have purchased. Tiiey pointed to lhe
inlet we had crossed the day before, and told us
that one day's march up it, and thenCe four days
oveiland, brought them lo the wreck.
None of these people had been there since ]fi47-
8, at whieh time tbey said but lililo remained, tbeir
counti vnicn having carried a way everything.
Most ol our information was received Iioiii nn intelligent old woman; she said it was in the lull of
the year that the ship was forced ashore; many of
the white men dropped by the way as they went toward the Great River ; but this was only known to
them the winter fallowing, when their bodies wero
discovered.
Tbey all assured us that we would find unlives on
the south shore, nt the Great Elver, and soma lew
ut (he wreck ; but unfortunately this was not tbe
case. Only one family were met off Point Booth,
and none at Montreal Island or any [dace eubse-
queui.lv visited.
PiiintOgle, Montreal Island, and Barrow Island
were searched without finding anything except a
few scraps ol iron and copper in an Esquimaux hiding place.
Uecrossing the strait to King William's Island, wa
continued the examination ol the southern shore
without success until ihe 24th ol May, when about
ten miles eastward of Gape Ihrsclirll. a lihaehed
skeleton was found, around which lay Inignients of
European clothing. Upon carefully removing tho
snow a small pocket book was found, eontaini.ig a
few letters. These, although much decayed, may
yet be deciphered. Judging from the remain* of bid
drCBs, this Unfortunate young man was a steward or
officer's servant, and his position oxacily veiilied
the Esquimaux'!) assertion, that they dropped iia they
walked along.
On reaching Cape Ilerschell, next dav, he examined Simpson's Oai'ii, or rather what remains of it,
which is only four feet high, and the central stones
have been removed, as il by men seeking something
within it. My impassion at the lime, and which I
till retain, is lhat records were deposited ihere by
he retreating crews, and tubsequently removed by
the natives.
After parting from me at Cape ATictoria. on tho
'28th Apiil, Lieut, llobson made for Cape Felix. At
a abort distance west of it he found a veiy la j;o
cairn, and close lo it three small tents, wilh blankeiH,
old clothes, and other relies ol'a shooling or a niag-
| iii-lic stationi but, alihough the cairn was dug under, and a trench dug all round it al a distance uf
ten feel, no record was discovered. A piece of
blank paper lolded up was found in the caiiu, and
two broken boilles, wbiel' limy, perhaps, havo urn-
tained records, lay beside it among some stanes
-frbljb bad fallen from .iff the top. The QUiat i iler-
esting of tho articles discovered here, including a
boat's ensign, were brought away by Mr. llolisi n.
About iwo miles further U) the southwest a small
cairn was ibund, but neither relies nnr n-eonli- obtained. About three miles norlh ol Poinl Viclory
a second small cairn was examined, but only a broken pick-nxe and empty cani.>ter were IihiihI. i
On the litb ol May, Lieut, ilobson pilulied his
tent beside a large cairn upon Mount Victory. Lying among some loose Htones which had lallen liom
the top of this cairn, wafl faurid a small tin case,
containing a record, tbesub-taiic.j ol which is briefly
