American, lias river mining been earned ou more
prosperous!,, than tho present season. Fortunes,
aclual fortunes are being made in a single Bummer,
1st well directed eu'ort and a favorable season. It
is" well known that far less snow fell upon our
mountains during last winter than is usual—the
consequence has beeo. less water in all our mountain streams ; and as ihe number of mining ditches
has been greatly increased, their requisite supply
ofwater has greatly assisted in redueing tlie quantity ftawimj In natural channels. This has rendered Saoriag and the laving dry ofthe rivers' beds
a much easier task than 'ever before, and should
the Tains bold off until httein autumn, our gold
dust buy, rs and shipper:; wiil see a larger amount
of nold forwarded aa the product of this summers
labor than upon any previous year ; although the
same cause that has made river tnininj- this year
profitable, has had a tendency to lessen the gross
yield from the placers. There has not in many
places been even a full supnly uf water tor the
ditches; and allow enough to go down the natural
channels fir tiie purpose, of pumping out the water from the river claims between dams. But as
a raining season for placer, bill and river claims,
in connection, with the increased operation in
quartz, over the whole State where gold ejuts,
we believe the present will be found to compare
favorably with any tbat has preceded it.

merolal world is flertolnly the taosi grand and important enterprise of thin age, and worthy the attention andco08i<J*i»tioe of every oivUiaed people
and Government. The plan, aa the Star understands, Is to go to the Atrato river, w>me fifty miles

of some elxty mile** more, without a ilnglerook

facts developed are beyond doubt ei question so
far as the work is concerned.
We arc acquainted with the gentlemen engaged

they are correct—we conclude that the project is a
practical one, and hope it will meet with success,

log tbe town. A comparison of anything out of
California, would be entirely beyond the region of
proDahilty, and we hardly think an instance can
be found in our State, where a town has been so
utterly prostrated, and so Bpeedly rebuilt, as the
town ot Qraffl Valley. In a few weeks, the only
evidence of our recent diaastar will ha hi the new
and improved aspect which everything around
will present to thu ourioiw looker on. Although
we hhould have boe»pleased to record a general
an.I ,h;terrninetl movement in favor of tpidwring
and Btraightening our atreeta, still, when we reflect
upon the numerous aild varied interests wliich
would thereby have baen affected, we can hardly
■wonder that it was found impossible to accomplish much in that particular. The general ap-
peaninoc of tlie place, however, will be decidedly
improved, and the new impulse which will bo given

verses arc the same as those in our present Bible*,

Covldn't TEU* the 0IFFERBSCE.—A loafer got
hold of a green persin mon which (before they had
ripened by the frost) are said to be the most "bitter
»nd po.ck.etj fruit known. He took the persimmoi)
outside the garden wall, and commenced upoi
by seizing a generous mouthful of Ihe fruit, which
appeared to frizzle his lips and tongue 'most pro*
vokiugly. "How do you like itr' asked the
owner of tbe garden, who had been watching him.
The salvia was oozing from both of the corners of
the*fellow'fl mouth, and he was able only to reply :
" How do I look, neighbor, am I whistling or am
J singing.'"
Curious Discovkrt.—While some workmen were
rugging in a field on Kichmond's Island, in Casco
Bay, a day or two since, they turned up a jar
containing gold and silver coins, Ther-- were
•seventeen of the gold coin?', of the denomination
of £1 each, and bore the dates of James I. and
Charles I. It is supposed that they were buried by
some of the early Inhabitant! during some of the
French or Indian difficulties, at tho common cam ent

settled lo that rieinity.

Bird, of plumarre rich and rare,
I would Boar with tliea in air;
Througli the broad ftspflinee orbhte.
Purer virions T would view.
Far from Fcencs where mortals weep,
On tliy pinions I Mould sweep ;
Gaily o'er the sparkling wave,
Where thy pinions thou dost lave
Leud, 0 lend me, th«B- thy wing,
Lonely wanderer, airy king!
Let me now my flight begin,
I would flee the earth's loud din.
Man has made this world, once fair,
The.birthplace of unceasing care ;
Hearts 'gainst hearts, till life is o'er,
Wage a dark, relentless war ;
And when death has kindly freed
A heart that lived alone to bleed,.
Buried 'neath the sod 'twill lie,
Perished e'ea from memory.
Far from earth's conflicting thrall,
I would live, if live at all ;
Give, O give me, then, thy wing,
Lonely wanderer, airy king.
Storms may raffle thy soft breast,
But they soon arc hushed to rest;
Leaving nothing in their train,
That can give thy bo^om pain.
Soon are ye upon the crest
Of heaving waves, with plumage drcst 5
Knowing not thr.tye have been
Dazzled by the lightning's sheen.
But when storms distract the mind,
Sad the ravage left behind,;
To ur fnl eyes and wasted cheek
Utter more than tongue can speak.
I with thee could brave the power
Of angry tempests for an hour;
But the constant weight, of care
This poor heart can never bear.

To the Memory of a SaiZor.
At last thou Jst found a haven. Many a year
Has passed since first thy venturing footsteps trod
The stately vessel's deck, and thy blue eye
Looked with a bailor's iove ou rope aad spar,
And in tho gush of boyhood's mantling pride
Thou call'dst the safely-bulwarked craft thy home.
And smiiecl with joy to see the crested wave
Come bounding wildly o'er yon dreary waste,
And melt iu foam at thy good vessel's side.
And thus, too, has! thou dared Life's troubled sen.
And breakers dashed around thee. Once 'twas
smooth.
And summer suns aud summer gales, as soft
As the bright seraphs' whispers, warmed and fanu'd
Thy early venture on Life's chancing wave ;
And the good angei ofa sister's love
Did pilot's duty, and a mother's prayers,
Like the frail helm, unseen, but not unfelt,
At danger's menace turned the trembling craft,
And fixed its course again ' a-port' toward heaven.
There hast thou moored at last. Its cloudless skies
And gales of balm celestial thine. How strange,
Athwart Life's varying tide to turn him back,
And learn the guiding of the unseen Hand,
That lead's Life's voyager safe into port—
To ownth' unerring pilot.
Fare thee well!
And she who struggled 'gainst the tide with thee ;
And dear ones, whose young lips have barely kissed
Life's changeful ripples; they who shared with thee
A sailor's trials ; wo who mourn a friend
Called to that vast unknown that all must tread ;
When the last sands shall sink beneath our feet,
Oh ! may our trembling hope be anchored then
Upou the Rocic of Ac.ks ! Fare thee well I
INDIAN JUGGLERS.
A party of juggler;; e;n;ie fbTWatd ou or.o occasion to perform publicly in the yard of tbe bar-
racfes at Madras. Tlie leader of the jugglers who
were all, of course, native.- of I Lindostan, requested
the commanding officer to place a guard of men
round the scene of display—a plficauti 1
was adopted, arid proved to be a very wtsfl oue.
The floor Of the court, be it observed, wfta eOTHpOS-
ed of sand, (inn and well trodden. On this ground,
then, after some preliminary tricks of r.n iniVrior
kind, one man was left alone with a little girl,
seemingly about eight or uine years old. Reside
them'ftood a.tall, narrow basket, perhaps throe or
four feet high, by a foot in width, :uid open at the
top. No other object, living or inanimate, appeared on the ground. After a short period spent
by the man in conversing with the girl, he Beenrtd
to get angry, and began to rail loudly at hot Fef
her neglect of some wish of his. The child ntf
tempted to soothe him, but be continued to show
an increased degree of irritation as he went on-
Ly degrees he lashed himself up into such apparent fary, that the'foam actually stood upon Me
lips, iind, being naturally of an dOprepossesBiing
countenance, he looked to the white sprctators, at
least, as like an enraged demon as might be. Finally, his wrath at the girl roee seemingly to an
uncontrollable height, and he seized her and put
her beneath the basket, or rather turned down the
open mouth of the basket over her person. She
wa3 thus shut entirely up, the turned bottom of
the basket closing her in above. Having thus disposed of the child, in spite of her screams and entreaties, the man drew his sword, which was al
bright as ihe surface ofa mirror, and he appeared
as if about to wreak some further evil ott tho object of his ire. And after some momeufs, during
which he talked to himself and to the enclosed
girl, ps if justifying his auger, iic did actually at
length plunge the sword down into the basket, and
drew it forth dripping with blood, or at least
blood-red drops! The child screamed pitecusly
from her prison, but in vain ; for the man plunged
the weapon again and again into the scene of her
confinement. Aa he did so, the cries of the girl
became faint by degrees, aud in the end died away
altogether. The deed of death was consummated.

Tho following lines were ordained from the lato
Mr, E. A. Davenport, compiler of a Dictionary of
Biography, and author of several other English
works. They are in Byron's own handwriting,
were sent with the seal and post-mark ofthe letter
which enclosed them, and were never before published in his works. The lines throw some light
on the apparent indifference which Byron was in
the habit of exhibiting oil the occasion of separation by death, or other causes, from those he loved;
and especially on tho occasion of his parting with
Madame Guiceioli, at the period of his embarkation
for Greece :
;; I heard thy fate without a tear,
Thy loss without a sigh ;
And yet thou wert surpassing dear,
Too loved of all. lo die.
I know not what hath seared mine eye :
The tears refuse to start;
But every drop its Hda deny,
Falls dreary on my heart.
Yea—deep and heavy, one by one,
They sink, and turn to care ;
As cavernefl waters wear tlie stone
Yet drooping, harden there :
They can not petrify more last,
Than feelings sunk remain,
Which coldly Bxed, regard the Past,
But never melt again !"'
So, at least, thought most of the horror-stiffceo
persons who witnessed this action. And well it
was for the chief performer in it that he had requested a guard to be placed, for it reefoired all
the exertions of this guard to prevent Ihe arouse,!
soldiery, who believed this to be no trick, hut a
piece'of diabolical butchery, from leaping into the
arena, and tearing the man into pieces. The excitable Irishmen among the number, in particular,
ground their teeth against one another, and muttered language not very complimentary to thejug
gler. Even the officers, whose better education
aad experience made them less open to such feelings, grew pale with uneasiness.
The wan, warned, perhaps, by the looks of the
soldiery that it would be as well to close the exhibition without delay, raised his bloody sword
for a moment, before the eyes of the assemblage,
and then struck the basket smartly with it. Tha
basket tumbled to one side, aud on the spot which
it had covered, in place of tho expected corpse of
the giri, whose last groans had just been heard,
there was seen—nothing! Nothing but the iiat
sand ofthe court-yard. No vestige of dress, or any
other tiling to indicate that the girl had ever been
there! The amazement ofthe spectators was unbounded, aud it was, if possible, rendered more intense, when after the lapse Ofa'few second-;, the
identical little girl came bounding from the side
of the court-yard-—from among the spectatG/Bfeet,
it seemed—and clasped the juggler round tho
knees, with every sign of affection, aud without the
slightest marks of having undergone any injury
whatever. As we have said, the astonishment ot
the assembly was immeasurable; and it might
really well be so, seeing that the feat was performed iu the centre ofa court, every point of the circumference of which was crowded with spectators.

VKTO.-.-iUnyor English, of Sacramento, has
vetoed the ordinance passed by the Common Ooun
cil of that city, providing lor the education of
negro children. He vetoes It upon the ground
that ii would lie obnoxious io a majority o(the
people who are Southerners,
lage, the nature ofthe ground put that out of tbe
question, and, besides, nothing of that kind existed,
was made plain to all who chose So satisfy thein-
selves on the ■■subject, by lookup;- at the seen-; of
the performances when they bad closed. Every
oue had been sure that the girl had been pat below
the basket, and that she did not get out of it in
the natural way. But she did get out, and how?
ft is impossible to ^iy. though there can be no doubt,
that it was accomplished by some skillful niau-
ceuvre.
A somewhat similar feat is occasionally performed with animals. A juggler will olteii place a
lean dog below one of these baskets, and preSto-
passl when ha lifts it up, you will behold a litter
of as line pups as ever whipper-in could desire.
But most people will probably think the tree triok
a more wonderful one than any of these. A juggler, in performing this, chooses either a small spot
of earth, ofthe extent of two or three feet aejuaro,
and in the open air : or he take.-; a large flower-pot,
aad fills it with mould for his purpose. Either of
the ways will do. Having thia small plot of tarth

the distance of two or three feet, thejug; : i
to the company a mango stone, or the .-dime found
iu the centre of the eastern fruit known by Lint
nam", which varies in size from that of an apple
upwards. This stone (he juggler then plants in the
earth, at the depth of several niches, and covers It
up. Not many minutes elapse until the spectators
behold a small green shoot arise from tlie spot. It
increases iu height and size every moment, Until it
attains the altitude ofa toot or so. It then begins
to send off branches from the main atera; oh these
branches leaves begin to appear, bearing the hue
ofvegetation. Buds next present them lelvi

Fortunes, aclual fortunes are being made in a single Bummer, 1st well directed eu'ort and a favorable season. It is" well known that far less snow fell upon our mountains during last winter than is usual—the consequence has beeo. less water in all our mountain streams ; and as ihe number of mining ditches has been greatly increased, their requisite supply ofwater has greatly assisted in redueing tlie quantity ftawimj In natural channels. This has rendered Saoriag and the laving dry ofthe rivers' beds a much easier task than 'ever before, and should the Tains bold off until httein autumn, our gold dust buy, rs and shipper:; wiil see a larger amount of nold forwarded aa the product of this summers labor than upon any previous year ; although the same cause that has made river tnininj- this year profitable, has had a tendency to lessen the gross yield from the placers. There has not in many places been even a full supnly uf water tor the ditches; and allow enough to go down the natural channels fir tiie purpose, of pumping out the water from the river claims between dams. But as a raining season for placer, bill and river claims, in connection, with the increased operation in quartz, over the whole State where gold ejuts, we believe the present will be found to compare favorably with any tbat has preceded it.
