Before the session of Congress, you may be

other sectional candidate. If he does not, there iH
no truth iu the saying that "the dog will return

Buchanan cajoled him, after his election, by one
or two petty appointments, and by personally noticing and flatteriug bim, and also by a promise
to furnish the correspondents and reporters of the
Herald with tho freshest department*! aud diplomatic news. Iu this case, as in respect of all ihe
rest of his promises and pledges, J. B., has been as
faithless as the wind, and Bennett finds that be

preparing'a resume of the bitter things that have
been said against Mr. Buchanan before and since
his election, whicb, when finished, are to be stewed
together in a cauldron ofthe'most poisouous malignity, and that is lo bo presented to the Presidential lips through the colums of the Herald in

E. P. RUSSELL'S PATEJVT.
FUANCIS MELLUS,
HAVINti purchased the patent right ofthe above
valuable invention, for tho purpose of supplying lhe counties ot Los Augeles, San Bernardino
-md San Diego, is now prepared to execute all orders with which he may be favored. ,
The public are aware that it has been the study of
scientific men, architects and builders, for many years
to discover an article for Roofing purposes, that will
withstand sudden changes ot climate, be impervious
to water, and of sure protection against fire. The
inventor of this roofing labored many years to com-
'tine articles which would answer the above purpose
and obviate the difficulties of rust and decay attendant upon tin aud shingles, and the destruction by
tho sun and frost of the various compositions used
lor roofing. This he succeeded iu doing, and now,
after six years of the severest trial we would invite
the careful attentien of all interested in such matters,
believing that they will be fully convinced of its
practical value both for durability and economy, in
which respects wc believe that its equal is not at
present known. This roofing can readily be applied
to root's of every description, either steep or flat, and
can be put on over shingles or tin, being much cheaper than the first and at half the cost ot the latter.
Two coats of the mastic put on over an old leaky
tin roof, will nirtke it as good as new at one-third of
the cost. In preparing this rooting a heavy drilling
or canvass is used, which is thoroughly saturated
with a perfectly water-proof preparation, atter which
it receives a thick coating, upon both sides, of the
flour of soapstonc, which sets into the texture ofthe
canvass, and gives it a firm'body, making it very
elastic and durable. After the canvass,, as prepared,
is put upon the roof, another coating of mastic, which
is thoroughly filled with sand, is given it, making it
fireproof in every respect. By exposure, this coating becomes firm and solid, giving you a roof that
can be walked upon with perfect impunity, and as
durable as anv thing known; and we do most candidly
and unhesitatingly believe, far superior to anything
of the kind yet discovered; and alter a severe test
of many years, stand as reliable and good as when
first put on, without change or decay. All that we
ask is, that a careful examination may be given it,
and we feel convinced that it will bear all the recommendation which we offer of it. Annexed we give
you the names of some of the persons using this
roofing, and to whom we are at liberty to refer:

From the Washington correspondent ol the
Bulletin, we tyke the following items:
MKxrCAN Afkaibs.—By advices lately at hand
from the Juarez Goperameat in Mexico, allusion is
made with gleeful satisfaction, to the favor with
which the decree for the nationalization ofthe
Church property is everyv/here throughout that
distracted Republic* received, reaching even to
the stronghold of Miramon.
The British Government have, nuough Capt.
Aldham, the commander ofthe British fleet in the
Gulf of Mexico, informed Juarez, that they would
not enforce the measures heretofore contemplated
for the redress of complaints, nor do any act that
would embarrass his Administration.
The Secretary of War.—It has been conjectured for a long time that Secretary Floyed will
be compelled to resign, his health being so precari.
ous as to prevent his attending personally to the
onerous duties of his department. Recent circumstances inspire the full belief that erelong he will
withdraw from the Cabinet: and rumor h

The r'nllowitig, says the Alta, is from a priva'o
letter addressed to a gentleman of this ciiy : —
Cam -Vlo\-o,U au, \ug 31, 1859.
Mormon alfaira are becomio;. flore complicated
every day. These people canco- be reached by
the U. i-. Cov-i, and they are now reallv as treasonable ps,at any previous time.
Judge Sinclair hes recently gone tbvoogh with
tbe farce of holding l. U. S. Court in Salt Lake
city, and Judge Bckles is now enacting the same
atNephi. .Tbe only civil officer—Judge CV<U-

have managed, with theassialance of JwJge Bla&l ,
and other powers, to transport to Carson \V:
The recent assassinations, by the Mormons, of
Gentiles, before Judge -Sinclair's court—one a
sergeant ol the 10th Infantry, in mid-day, and, I'm
told, at the time in the custody ef the U. S. Marshal, passing from the court room to his quarters ;
the other a witness against Brigham Young, ia a
case wluuii was to come up the following day—is
pretty good evidence that tbey are determinftd to
carry out their threats or boasts: that they will
uot permit tha laws of the United States which
may coBfiicf'with their interests (the Moruiofl
Ci:mr<5h)-to bo executed here.
Lieut.'Gay, 2d Dragoons, had alight, a short
time since, with a party of Indians, charged hy
the Mormons with having massacred a party oi*
immigrants. Lieut. G. reports to have killed
some twenty Indians, and had six men wounded.
He wus sent out upon a requisition based upon
Mormon reports.
It is believed by many here that the deed was
committed bv (be Mormons and charged to the
Indians with the view of bringing them in conflict
with the troops. Tbere are some circumstances
which go to sustain this, one of which is the cvi*
i toe of a woman who made her escape during
.h; massacre,
': ere is no law here outside of our military
Ag■■■-. 'Obion', except that of the Mormon Church.
P. IS.—Later.—We have just received jiilorma-
tTroij i':'<.;ii the troops against the Indians, that the
masBaQi;e was committed by a party of outlawed
Indians', from several tribes, who have been for
some time in league with'the Mormons, infesting
tfie route to California—tbe Indians stealing and
the Mormons purchasing the horses, &c. The organized tribes—Bannocks and Snakes—in tbat
wection, visited the troops at once and reported
these facts. There is no doubt that Mormons are
«t the head of lhe party, and committed tlie rape
upon the women. We uulicipate uo trouble from
the Indian tribes here.
Tlie Stale Exhibition.
This evening closes the s:xth annual exhibition
of the State Agricultural Soiiety, in all respects,
seemingly,a splendid success to the Stale aud Society, whose officers have accomplished miracles of
industry in building, collecting, and arranging
such an enormous industrial exhibition in a teu-
ye.ar old Slate. California may well have an
honest pride in the exhibition, and tho citizens of
Siicvani'Mto may well congratulate each other on
the credit due their city in the completeness aud
perfection with which all the intentions of the Society have, this year, through their material assistance, been made manifest to the whole people
of our Slate, in an exhibition of the increased
amount of our industrial resources. Of course,
parts ofthe exhibition were defective, and some
of the minor details might have beeu bettered.—
Ii, would be almost an impossibility that such a
mammoth euttrpnse could be otherwise; but in
the groat whole, no one of our former exhibitions
has been so perfect, none so generally satisfactory.
Alfhough it is questionable whether tho outside
aids made use of to draw a largo influx o( people
into Sacramento city is of a benefit to the Sceicty,
no one can blame our Sacramento nei^hbo s for
making tbe most of the occasion after their enormous outlay; and io their credit be it sa;d, uo

tawards Central America. It bas set its face
against any expedition, peaceable or otherwise.—
Every precautionary measure has been taken ;;
prevent organized bodies of men leavn.i;: o:

can port. It is positively stated that orders-

on fhe Nicaragua Nation, to prevent tin; .
of Walker or his followers, at all hazards, au m
case they arrested him in the act, to turn hitO
over to tbe Nicaragua authorities. Capt. Montgomery, who has been ordered to the command oi the
Facific squadron, has no sympathy with Walker or the movement, and if they fall into his
hands, he will show no mercy. His orders are
explicit; so if Walker determines to run the
gauntlet, we may expect another big row in Congress, similar to the Paulding affair.
Cai-iforsiaLandSdrvet.—Plats ofthe following townships have been received at the General
Land office : Nob. 30 and 31 north of range 1 east;
and 31 and 32 norlh, of range 2 west, of the Mount
Diablo meridian uf the Slaty of California.
It is thus seen that (he total loss in killed and
wounded of the Allies was 24,350, and ofthe Austrians 38,690; making a difference against the
Austrians of 11,300. The number of French taken prisoners was only 3000, while the Austriaus
i lost 1-1,000. Tbe French took forty pieces of cau-

Roofing ! »££».ss-S;l<3 HooflllS III E. P. RUSSELL'S PATEJVT. FUANCIS MELLUS, HAVINti purchased the patent right ofthe above valuable invention, for tho purpose of supplying lhe counties ot Los Augeles, San Bernardino -md San Diego, is now prepared to execute all orders with which he may be favored. , The public are aware that it has been the study of scientific men, architects and builders, for many years to discover an article for Roofing purposes, that will withstand sudden changes ot climate, be impervious to water, and of sure protection against fire. The inventor of this roofing labored many years to com- 'tine articles which would answer the above purpose and obviate the difficulties of rust and decay attendant upon tin aud shingles, and the destruction by tho sun and frost of the various compositions used lor roofing. This he succeeded iu doing, and now, after six years of the severest trial we would invite the careful attentien of all interested in such matters, believing that they will be fully convinced of its practical value both for durability and economy, in which respects wc believe that its equal is not at present known. This roofing can readily be applied to root's of every description, either steep or flat, and can be put on over shingles or tin, being much cheaper than the first and at half the cost ot the latter. Two coats of the mastic put on over an old leaky tin roof, will nirtke it as good as new at one-third of the cost. In preparing this rooting a heavy drilling or canvass is used, which is thoroughly saturated with a perfectly water-proof preparation, atter which it receives a thick coating, upon both sides, of the flour of soapstonc, which sets into the texture ofthe canvass, and gives it a firm'body, making it very elastic and durable. After the canvass,, as prepared, is put upon the roof, another coating of mastic, which is thoroughly filled with sand, is given it, making it fireproof in every respect. By exposure, this coating becomes firm and solid, giving you a roof that can be walked upon with perfect impunity, and as durable as anv thing known; and we do most candidly and unhesitatingly believe, far superior to anything of the kind yet discovered; and alter a severe test of many years, stand as reliable and good as when first put on, without change or decay. All that we ask is, that a careful examination may be given it, and we feel convinced that it will bear all the recommendation which we offer of it. Annexed we give you the names of some of the persons using this roofing, and to whom we are at liberty to refer: — RBFEIIENCKS. — TN BOSTON—Union GlassCo. The British Government have, nuough Capt. Aldham, the commander ofthe British fleet in the Gulf of Mexico, informed Juarez, that they would not enforce the measures heretofore contemplated for the redress of complaints, nor do any act that would embarrass his Administration. The Secretary of War.—It has been conjectured for a long time that Secretary Floyed will be compelled to resign, his health being so precari. ous as to prevent his attending personally to the onerous duties of his department.
