Moral Scasios- on a Ham.—Wben a friend of
ours, whom we call Agricola, was a boy, he lived
on a farm in Berkshire county, the owner of which
•was troubled by a dog Wolf. The cur killed his
sheep knowing, poi haps, that he was conscientiously opposed to caiital punishment, and he could
devise no means to prevent it. "I cau break him
ol it," said Agricola, '-if you will give me leave."
"Thou art permitted," said the bouest farmer;
and we will let Agricola tell the story in his owu
words. "There was a ram on the farm," said -Agricola, " as notorious for butting as Wolf was for
sheep stealing, and who stood in as much need of
moral suasion as ihe dog."
"I abut Wolf up in the barn with this old fellow,
and the consequence was lhat the dog never look-
ed a Hiwji ii; fin.; Uze again. The nun broke every bone in his body.)literally. Wonderfully uplifted was the ram aforesaid, by his exploit; his
insolence became intolerable; be was sure to pitch
on whomsoever went nigh him.
" 'I'll fix hiin,' said I—and bo I did. I rigged
an irou crowbar out ol a-hole in the barn, point
foremost, and put au old hat on the end of it.—
you can't always tell, when you see a hat, whether there is a head in it or not; how then should a
ram? Aries made at it full butt, and being a
good marksman from long practice, the bar broke
In between his horns and came out under bis tail.
This little admonition effectually cured him of
buttiug.

E. P. RUSSELUS PATENT.
FRANCIS MELLUS,
HAVING purchased the patent right of the above
valuable invention, for the purpose of supply-
tu"lhe counties of Los Angeles, Sun Bernardino
;itid Sau Diego, is now prepared ty execute all orders with whieh he may be favored.
The public are aware that it has been the study of
scientific men, architects and builders, formany yt
to discover au article for Hoofing purposes, that will
withstand sudden changes ol climate, be impervious
to water, and of sure protection against fire. The
inventor of this rooting labored many years to com-
'tiuo articles which would answer the above purpose
nud obviate the difficulties of rust and decay attendant upon tin and shingles, and the destruction by
tho sun and frost, of the various compositions used
lor rooting. This he succeeded in doing, and now,
after six years of the severest trial we would invite
the careful attention of all interested in such matters,
believing tliat they will be fatly convinced of its
practicaf value both for durability and economy, in
which respects we believe that its equal is not at
present known. This roofing can readily be applied
to roofs of every description, either steep or Hat, and
can be put on over shingles or tin, being much cheap-
or than the first aud at half the cost of the latter.
Two coats of the mastic put on over an old leaky
tin roof, will m ike it as good as new at one-third of
the cost. In preparing this roofing a heavy drilling
or canvass is used, which is thoroughly saturated
with a perfectly water-proof preparation, alter which
it receives a thick coating, upon both sides, of the
Hour of soapstone, which sets into the texture of the
canvass, and gives it a linn body, making it very
elastic and durable. After the canvass, as prepared,
is put upon the roof, another coating ol mastic, which
is thoroughly tilled with sand, is given it, making it
fireproof iu every respect. By exposure, this coating becomes firm aud solid, giving you a roof that
cau be walked upon with perfect impunity, and ae
durable as anything known; and we do most candidly
and unhesitatingly believe, far superior to anything
of the kiud yet discovered; and alter a severe test
of many years, stand as reliable aud good us when
Grit put on, without change or decay. All that we
ask is, that a careful examination may be given it,
»nd we feel convinced that it will bear all thu recommendation which wo offer of it. Annexed we give
you tho names of some of the persons using this
roofing, and to whom we are at libei ty to refer:

From the reports of the various committees of
this society, and the Fruit Growers Convention,
we take the following extracts :—
PEARS.
The committee on pears report, that many 0'
the summer pears, the Bartlett included, were ov
er-ripe and the true flavor could not be discerned'
But anything superior to the specimen of Bartlett
pears exhibited by Mr. Gould, we do uot remember to have tasted. We have lound no pear that
can compare with this variety of summer fruit.
It is worthy of note that tho specimens of Bartlett
pear from Smith's gardens, at Sacramento, are
le?s ripe than those from the hay districts—say,
ten days later. And tho same pear is just enter
iug our markets from Los Angeles (400 miles
south) in barely ripe condition.
Fall pears are not ripe, which makes judgment
difficult of determination. That tho Seckle is
properly a fall pear, is made certain by the fact,
that it is at this time (September d, 1S5*J,) unripe'
Tlie Louis Bonne appears to be the second hest,
after the Seckle ; hut it ia apt to decay at the centre, unless it he plucked before maturity, and allowed to ripen off the tree. Tbis remark probably
applies to lall pears generally.
The winter pear presents much more difficulty ;
not any being far enough matured to afford any
lair judgment. Besides, we have aa yet uo experience that covers more than a fractional number
of tiie varieties exhibited.
The Easter Beurre and the Winter Neliis appear
to he the most fully proven as to keepiug realities
and to flavor combined.
WILL CALIKOKNIA API'Lt^ KEEP ?
This question, so interesting to our fruit men, is
now answered in tbe affirmative.
Mr. Wadswortb, editor of tho Culturist, and
originally impressed with tbe idea that our apples
would not keep, presents upecimeus of apples
grown hy Charles Mock, of Pctaluma, iu 1858—
whicb arc now iu a state of good preservation.
There aro three varieties—viz: first, the Unil,
second, tho Green Skin, or Green Cheese; tliird,
the Carolina Greening— all being of South Carolina stock.
Dr. Haile, of Alameda, exhibits specimens ol
what looks like tbo Green Newtown Pippin (and
so we call it) grown on his ground in 1S58, and
now iu sound condition.
Mr, Osborn, of Napa, and Mr. Hill, of Sonoma"
have each preserved the Newlowu Pippiu of 1858
to the end of May, 1859.
It Is earnestly desired that other public spirited
ments.
From experience so far realized, we commend
to notice the cultivation of several varieties of
apples (aud of other fruits) which are being introduced, natives of South Carolina aud Georgia-
It appears tbat trees from those latitudes east
are better adapted to the climate of California for
late keeping than trees from the more northern
Slates. Bernard Fox, of Sauta Clara, has raised
in his nurseries some lifly varieties of soutbern apple trees, bearing many names quite unknown to
us, being mostly seedlings from the Indian settlements.
As our fruit increases, it behooves growers to
look to their stock. Trees which this year are in
good market standing may be supplanted in public favor a few years hence. It is the design of
this report lo serve the iutere.Lt of growers by giving publicity to whatever new suggestions seem
lo bear upon Iheir interests.
The experience of every grower seems to unite
iu recommending the selection of nursery trees of
one year's growth Irom the graft in preference to
older plants. Tlie mutilation of root is proportionately less in transplanting, and the future
hardihood of the tree will repay tbe apparent delay of growth—which is only apparent, as the
third year will rrove.

going up the country. He said he was. Wheu do
you start! Iu a few minutes, but I'd wait till
morning for a companion, and give him a seat iu
my buggy. Enough said, I'll go. And thus at an
unexpected moment the good opportunity offered,
and I was ready. I packed my saddle-bags in
good old itinerant fashion, bid my friends good
bye, slept, awoke, and was ready for niy journey.
At an early hour we were on our way. The
road is smooth, the air cool, the horses frc.-h. Hie
!*uogy light, and my travelling companion is a
scholar, well versed in ancient and modern literature, has been ou tbis frontier from the be
ning, is thoroughly acquainted witb the mam
and customs of the people, has seen the elephant
on all Bldfe-f, aud, like all men of his claaa, is
communicative, aud seems never to tiro in rei
ting his adventures and answering your question
so I am '-thoroughly furnished" for a pleasai
trip. The country through which we traveled is
sui-geueris. Hero are no bold mountains, no
gently rising hills, no broad prairies stretching beyond the reach of the eye, no mpjestic forests
overarching the road but a level counlry thickly
set with low scrubby trees, scraggy bushes and all
varieties of the caclus. This may well be considered a thorny land, for almost everything has a
thorn; but nowithatanding the growth of the conn"
try, the soil is rich, and where there ia rain, produces a variety of crops iu great abundance and
witb lit.le labor.
Our seasons are ho long that two crops will mature in oue year; but there ia so little rain here
lhat people cannot depend upou their farms for a
living unless Ihey irrigate their lauds, but this can
be easily done. The land is cheap and productive on the Rio Grande, and thousands who are almost starving on the wcrn out hills of the old
States would do well to seek homes upon tliis
frontier. Itisahcaltby country, aud never molested by ludians. I heartily wish that enterprising upright Americans would come aud settle up
this whole valley. They would give a new tone
to our society, and sow more tbau one kind ol
goodseed. But while wo have talked ol the appearance and productiveness of the country, the
coolness of the air has gone, the suu has mounted
to zenith, and now makes dusly viejentes and panting caballo glad to see a raneho, aud at the lirst
opening we turn in. And now that we arc iu the
shade, (.how pleasant it is) and while we arc waiting for dinner (don't think you'll hear anything
more of the diuuer, for if J could ask no questions
tor stomach's sake, I'll tell no tales for conscience sake) wc will havo a tale about the ranchos. which uo larms on which ncveral families
live, and resemble small villages. Generally |
there arc Irom twenty ^to a hundred persons ou a
raneho.
The fields are fence with brush, and tho houses
are made ot poles and grass or carl. The frames
of lhe houses ure first mads of poles and Ihcu
weatherboaided with cane or loug grass, thongs
of raw-iiide beiug used instead of nails. The houses or jaocols (pro hark-ols) thus made are plastered inside with mud and covered wilh grass or
palmetto. A dozen or two of these rude buildings
clustered together iu or uear the brush-enclosed
held are called a raneho, aud tbere ure many of these
ranches on both sides of the Rio Grande, and they
are all very much alike, but there is a remarkable
addition to some of them. At a convenient place
there is a loug broad arbor covered with grass or
cane and surrounded with seals. At one end of
this arbor there isa fixture somewhat like a pulpit.
But the arbor, what is it for? It is for a fandango. Here men and women, old and young, often
meet and spend lhe whole night in lively Mexican dances. And the pulpit fixture, what is il*
It is the bar, where arc kept liquors aud viands to
refresh aud inspirit I'audaugeros.
But I cauuot teli you all the thoughts aud thco"
ries that passed through my mind during the trip.
A trip up the Rio Grande will make auy earnest
man think much and feel more. At almost every
raneho one cau liud material fur a loug letter, so
peculiar and strange are the manners and customs
ofthe Mexicans; but I must try to close this letter. Atouerauch where wc stopped for dinner,
we fouud some white people, some black and some
neither thu one nor the otht-r, but Ihey all seemed
to understand English. 1 bad never hoard of them
before, but Ihey were huaiau beings and Christ
died fur ihem. Tbey had uot heard a sermon lor
years and perhaps would uot for yenrs tOCOme. My
heart yearned for them, and I ruuiember the great
commission, "preach the Gospel to every creature," and so I lold my fried if ho would wait I

learned thiit the ball had beeu extracted. It wm
found lodged under the skin on the outside of lhe

ball had entered the right breast at the poiut above
named, when it took an outward course, passing
through the lunacies, shattering the sternum, or

much has not been ascertained. It was tho opinion of llie surgeons, at tliat hour, that unless tho
left lung was badly injured, tho wound was not
necessarily mortal. Mr. Broderick wus a good

BY FRANK BAKER, HO and 11*2 Clay street, jy23-3in SAN FRANCISCO. Moral Scasios- on a Ham.—Wben a friend of ours, whom we call Agricola, was a boy, he lived on a farm in Berkshire county, the owner of which •was troubled by a dog Wolf. The cur killed his sheep knowing, poi haps, that he was conscientiously opposed to caiital punishment, and he could devise no means to prevent it. "I cau break him ol it" said Agricola, '-if you will give me leave." "Thou art permitted" said the bouest farmer; and we will let Agricola tell the story in his owu words. "There was a ram on the farm" said -Agricola, " as notorious for butting as Wolf was for sheep stealing, and who stood in as much need of moral suasion as ihe dog." "I abut Wolf up in the barn with this old fellow, and the consequence was lhat the dog never look- ed a Hiwji ii; fin.; Uze again. The nun broke every bone in his body.)literally. Wonderfully uplifted was the ram aforesaid, by his exploit; his insolence became intolerable; be was sure to pitch on whomsoever went nigh him. " 'I'll fix hiin,' said I—and bo I did. I rigged an irou crowbar out ol a-hole in the barn, point foremost, and put au old hat on the end of it.— you can't always tell, when you see a hat, whether there is a head in it or not; how then should a ram? Aries made at it full butt, and being a good marksman from long practice, the bar broke In between his horns and came out under bis tail. This little admonition effectually cured him of buttiug. S.
