The following beautiful poem
Dumber of tbe Knickerbocker :
is from a late
Tarry with me, 0 my Saviour!
Por tin' day is passing by ;
See, the Bhades of evening gather I
And tl::. US"'. ■■' 2FCWE2 ?*£*».
Tarry with me I tarry with me!
rienda were gathered round me,
In the bright days or the pasi ;
Tint the grave has elo-rd above them,
And [linger here the last;
1 am lonelyl tarry with me,
Till tlie dreary night is past
Dimmed for roe is - artbly beauty ;
"i ■ i the spirit's eye would Tain
Rest npen Tht lovely features ;
Shall I seek, dear «ord, In vain ■
Tarry with me I 0 my Saviour 1
Let in-: see thy smile again.
Dull my ear to earth-born music ;
Speak, Tbou, Lord, In words of cheer,
Feeble, touting my footsteps,
Sinks my heart with sudden fear;
Cast T-hdvb arms, dear Lprdj around me,
Let me feel thy presence near.
Faithful memory paints before me,
Every deed and thought of s!n ;
Open Thoe the bl lod-fiiled fountain,
Cleanse my guilty sou! within;
Tarry Tnot; forgiving Saviour! (
Wash me holy from my aln.
Deeper, deeper grow the shadows*, •
Paler now tbe glowing west;
Swift the night of death advances—
Snail It be the eight ol rest?
Tarry with mel 0 my Saviour!
i, trembling, fainting, 'lying,
Lord, 1 east myself on Thki I
Tarry with me through the darkue* i;
While i sleep, Btil watch * y me
Till the morning, Hum awake me,

Discovery or the Reitinlns ..r tho Sir John
Franklin Expedition.
In an exchange we notico an account of the explorations of an expedition fitted out by tho Hudson Bay Company in February last, at. the request
ofthe British Government, We were aware seme
months since of the formation, of the expedition,
hut this is the first mention we have seen of the
result of its explorations. A Mr. Stewart and Mr.
Anderson started with the company on the 7th of
February, 1855, from the Gompaay's Poefc in 54
degrees North latitude, to Fort Ciiipewyau, at
the head of Lake Athabasca, in latitude 50 North
where they constructed boats, and then journeyed to Peace River and Fort Resolution in Slave
Lake. On the 22d June started for Fish or Back
river, in 64 Northland followed that stream to the
Arctic Ocean.
At the mouth of Back river tliey found Eacpri-
maux, who confirmed .Dr. II ic's report, and who
directed them to Montreal Island for the evidences
of the death of Franklin's men. They found enow
shoes known to be English make, with the name
of Dr. Stanley, who was the surgeon of Sir John
Franklin's ship, the Erebus, cut in them by a
knife. Afterwards they foiled, on the same Island,
a boat belonging to the Franklin expedition, with
the name Terror distinctly visible. A piece of
this boat containing this name was brought along
with them by Mr. Stewart.
Among the Esquimaux were found iron kettles,
corresponding in shape and size with those furnished the Franklin expedition, and bearing the mar.,
ofthe British Gorernmeot. Other articles, known
to have belonged to the expedition, were obtained
from the Esquimaux. No bodies, however, were
found, or traces of any. Tho report of the Esquimaux was, that one man died ou Montreal Island
and that the balance of the party wandered on the
beach of the main land opposite, until worn out
by fatigue and starvation, they, one by one, laid
themselves down and died too.
The Esquimaux reported still farther, that Indians far to the north of them, who had seen the
ship of Franklin's party, and visited them, stated
that they had both been crushed between tho icebergs. To every inquiry the Esquimaux protested
tl at they died of starvation.
Gathering together the relics found, the party
set cut on their return on the 9th day of August
last.
And eo, at last, the mystery is solved. Erare
Sir John, whose fate has awakened tiie sympathizing curiosity of (ho civilized world, it is now
known, sleeps his last sleep by the shores of tho
frozen seas, through whdse icy islands he had
vainly sought to pass. Four winters back, as the
Esquimaux said, the noble party, after escaping
from tlie ships which could no longer float on
those dangerous seas, found release from their sufferings in death.
The Ship Ilo-joliite,
The British exploring ship Resolute, which was
abandoned in the Arctic Seas and afterwards picked up by an American whaler and carried into
New London, Conn., has become an object of
much interest—her log-book has been found containing regular entries from Sept. 1, 1853, to
April 2, 1854, when she was probably abandoned.
The following curious circumstances connected
with her, will be road with interest :
In the year 1852. Messrs. Perkins & Smith,
ship owners of New London, sent Out a bark called Mr. Civil tin, to Davis Straits, for the pnrposii
of getting oil and bone. Wluie iishing here, the
Captain cf the McClellan (ell in with Sir Edward
Belcher's squadron wintering in the ice. While
in their company (he McClellan was crushed in
the ice, and itwas thought prudent by the Captain
to abandon the ship, and sell her and the contents
to the commander ol tlie British Bcmadron, This
was accordingly done, and the whaling bulk was
stripped of everything that was valuable on
board, and the articles distributed on board ofthe
various vessels composing the Heel. The George
Henry. Cunt. BuddiHgtou.was fitted out by Messrs.
Peiki'ns & Smith to fill the place of the lost bark
McClellan, and in 186S she proceeded to the very
sea where the latter was abandoned to Sir Edward
Belcher's party, and here in the course of the
Voyage one ofthe very squadron which assisted
theMcCtellan'scommander iu bis difficulty was
picked up, an abandoned ship, by the vessel Titled
out in the place of the one taken possession of'by
theBritish three years previously. This ta net
all. On board the Resolute are DOW pieces of
sail of American manufacture, which bad doubt-
less hung from the top-gallant yard of (he ill-fal,
ed McClellan. It is very strange, lhat after such
a lapse of time a remuant of Messrs. Perkins St
Smith's lost vessel should be brought to their
very doors from the depths of the Arctic regions
in this manner.
As no communication has iieen had with the
British Government in regard to the recovery of
the Resolute by Capt. Biiddiiiglnii, the liual disposition ef the ship cannot be determined upon.
However, it is very likely that her formi t owners
will buy her back, and remunerate her Balvors
handsomely for their trouble, bravery, aud unceasing perseverance.
Messrs. Grianell. Minium & Co., agents for
Messrs, Perkins & Smith, will, it, is said, arrange
the matter with the English Government in a

Adventure In the LCncltwooila,
In the rammer of [825 [was traveling oa Dual-
aesa in the western part of Tennessee, Thai portion of the State which Ilea between the Tennessee aad the Mississippi ma at that tlm
drear] forest. No roads—nethlng bat bone-
pattathrough the woods, and the only marks to
gune the traveler upon bli journey were Hie
"blazes'' and '-notches" upon the trees. I
ma dressed in true baokwoodi fashion, and I re le
a fiery mustang, w th a mane aud tail as while as
snow, a beautiful arched neck, end an eve Uka an
eagle, lie was a perfect beauty and as fleet as
the wind. Across his baek 1 bad thrown B pair of
Baddle-bagt, containing on one side a dozen
"pones "of corn bread and a piece oi baCOD, and
|o balance them there waa a "nlla ot roeka'Mn
■"■ the other end la the shape of two thousand dollars in gold, which I had collected, and was transporting t© a bank in Kentucky to dispose of for
Eastern axohauge. Two large wooden atlrrupi
hung dangling from my saddle, aud tbe holsters
in (root contained two beauties in the shape of
enormous horse-pistols; orer thsse, to keep them
dry. was the pqnirrel Bkin covers.
I had been riding for several hours, iwimtolDg
the rivers that crossed my path, eni.tling in the
rich perfume of tho forest flowers, watching the
squirrels playing about in the tree-tops, and listening to the music which issued from the throats
of the thousands or bright winged songsters with
which the woods abounded. I had not seen a solitary human being since morning, and night waa
rapidly approachiug ; indeed, it had already begun lo grow dark, aod 1 had made up my mind I
would have to camp out for the night. I was
looking around to select some good place, when
I was startled by tha neighing ofa horse ahead of
mc, and presently I saw two i.ri«n approaching on
horseback. They wen rough-looking fellows,
dressed in hunting shirts, and wilh squirrel
skin caps on their heads. I did not like their
looks, and unseen by them I drew up my pistol*,
and cucking them, replaced them in the holsters,
and casting my "eyes ahf&d.^ saw one ofthe men
make a motion I did net like. I resolved If they
proved to be what f suspected, I would give them
a hard fight and die game.
'• iViaw!" what a fool I wasi" thought I, as
they rode up and bid me good evening. We conversed about five minutes, whoa one of them
said :
'■My youngster, what have you get in your
saddle-bags that rattles so!"
"Nails,'' I replied.
"Nails!" said he. "Hey Bill, let's examin
tho article I" and he seized my horse by Ihe bit.
Quick as liehlning T drew my pistols, a»d
poiiited awuzzle to each of their hearts.
"Gentlemen," said I, '■'scake a motion to draw
a weapon, and that motion seals your fate!''
They were completely taken by surprise;; and
wheeling their horses around, they struck off into
the forest. After getting ft few roda off, one of
them raised his fis: in a threatening attitude, I
drew-tbe trigger of my right hand pintohand
the villain's arm fall upon his saddle, and atte
iitg a yell cf agony, Ihey darted off iu the woo,!
I reloaded my pistol, struck raj spurs into tho
horse's side, and after ten miles of the tasteit
riding I ever experienced, I reached ft log house
where t put up lor the night.
Two years after the incident jufit noted tcok
place, I was travelling down the .Mississippi on an
old-fashioned boaf, wlieu my attention was attracted towards an Individual on board, whom I
thought Iliad met before, but where T could no) Bay.
I was determined to follow him tip, find BOS ii" I
could not call to mind where Wfl had met, and
under what circumstancea. I at last found au opportunity to get a good look at him, ay he was
Beated upon ah old barrel head, earnestly
in a game of "seven up." I stepped up. end
looking over his shoulder, perceived that two
fingers of his right band were, missing. The game
progressed, until iu an excited moment he arose,
and shaking bin list in (lie face of h!a opponent,
in answer to some remark of tho latter concerning the game, exclaimed—
•' I swear you liel"
I placed my hand upon his shoulder, acd turning him around—
"Ah!ba!"I exclaimed, "we've mwt before."
Liftinghis maimed hand, his face turned white
as a sheet, and, hoarse with passion, he vociferated:—
■' Yes, we have met before, in lbe woods of Tennessee ; and I have sworn that you thai! die! Take
that!"
And the wretch attempted lo draw a pistol from
his coat, but the trigger caught ia the ragged lining ol'his pocket, il went off, and feu rolled overboard into the muddy waters of the Mississippi—a
corpse..
TwENTT-PlVB! years ago, Iowa was a wilderness,
tenanted only by the savages. Now she has a civilized population estimated at six hundred thousand)
ard constantly increasing. The emigration last
year was very heavy.
During tbe year 1864, one hundred and sixty*
five men were hung in the United States for murder. Of (his number, only seven could read and
write.
THEBE ia as mneh greatness ai mind in the owning ofa good turn as in the doing of it: and we
must no more force a requital, out of season, than
be wanting in it.
Take heed of jesting: many have been ruined
by it. It's hard to jest, and not, aomi times jeer,
too ; which oftentimes sinks deeper than was intended or expected.
He who says lu'bis heart "I will be useful to
my race," ought 10 begin by mastering the knowledge of himself.
The happlnessof tbe human race lathis world
docs not consist of our being devoid of patsions,
but in our learning to command them.

Singular Anecdote.
Two gentlemen at St. I'etersburg had coa-
tracted a bitter and irreconciliablc enmity agaisst
eaeli other, A servant of one, happening to die,
was buried within twenty-four hours, after Ihe
Russian custom, when the other determined to
gratify his revenge upon his enemy by accusing
him of the murder of his man. To give color to
this accusation, accompanied by some of his con-
Qdential servants, he proceeded privately t» disinter the corpse, with a view of inflicting marks
of violence upon it. The body was removed
from the cofflu, and held erect, that it might re-
Oeive a severe Hogging, when to the astonish.
ment and dismay of the whole party, after a few
blows had been inflicted, animation returned, aud
the affrighted resurrection men ran off with tlie
atnofll precipitation. Thi; corpse soon recovered
its animation, and was enable to move oil' in its
shroud and regain Eta master's habitation, which ho
enteri A to the great terror of its respective inhabitants. Al length, however, bis reality becoming
certain, they were reassured, and ihe supposed
ghost comraunieated all that he could remember
of the state he had been in, which was that Li*
senses had not left him, although he felt so torpid
as to be incapable of motion until the blows had
restore!! him. This led lo the detection of the
diabolical plan against his master's liio aud
character.
To tlws Point.
It ia stated that Bishop Donne, of New Jersey
[a strongly opposed to temperance. A short time
I incft. Rev. Ur. Perkins, Oi the same denomination,
and a member of the ©rder of '-Sons,'' dined with
tbe Bishop, who, pouring out a glass of wine,
desired the Rev. gentleman to drink with him,
Da lie replied :
"Cant do It, Bishop, 'wine la a mocker.' "
of brandy, then," said tho distinguished ecclesiastic.
" Can't do it, Bishop,'strong drink Is raging.' "
By tbifl time the Bishop becoming somewhat
restive and excited, said to Mr. Perkins:
"You'll DABS the decanter to the gentleman
next to you.'' *
•' No, Bishop, I can't do that, 'wo unto him that
puttetb the bottle to his neighbor's lips.' "
