eight p. m.    The feat of Mr. Brown was" one of the
most wonderful on record.    We regret to say that
he has never received the compensation agreed to
be paid him for the daring act, and the Government is largely indebted to him for other important services. Juan crossed the Isthmus of Panama four times previous to coming to California,
and has doubled Cape Horn three limes, lie was
taken prisoner by Gen. Fiores, in one of the South
American wars, and escaped from him to this State

Death of an   Exlraordloary  Character,
Dikd—In Stockton, December 10th, 1S59, John
Brown, a native of Carlescrona, In Sweden, in the
The San Joaquin Republican  gives the following history of John Brown, who. although of
the same name us he 6t Ossawattomie, was quite
lother character ;—
The life of the subject of this notice has been an
;eutful one. Embarking at the age ot fifteen
; the service of his native country (Sweden), he
lied for England, and was iu the harbor of Portsmouth when the English frigate Bellerophon arrived there with the Emperor Napoleon I, as a
prisoner on board. He next engaged in the service of Gen. Simon Bolivar, aud was present in
 „fthe engagements which marked the progress of that patriot to power in South America.
Juan Flacco, as he was called, arrived iu Califor-
"n 182S, and has resided in the country ever
since. During the war with Mexico, while Mr.
Brown was enlisted in the company of Major A.
H. Gillespie, at Los Angeles, the Caliiornians
managed to surround the town, and threatened
the entire destruction of Major G.'s force. The
only possible chance lor timely relief was from
Commodore Stockton, who was then lying with
the Savannah frigate at Sun FraucisCo. At the
request of Major Gillespie. Mr. Brown undertook
to carry a dispatch to Com. Stockton. Gillespie
prepared the dispatch in a bundle of thirty cigar-
etlas, and placing it among other bundles of the
weed, Brown succeeded in eluding ttie vigilance
of the Californians (then commanded by Gen. Andres Pico), although pursued by them, and coming within an ace of being taken, he euceeded,
after an unparalled ride ol four days, in delivering his message lo Com. Stockton in person ; the
consequence was, the relief 0! M;ijor Gillespie and
the rescue of him and his force from utter destruction.
Mr. Brown was afterwards employed by Gen.
lvearny to carry an express to Col. Fremont, which
he accomplished by crawling through the Califor-
nian camp, and obtaining a horse from an acquaintance (a Calilornian), whom he of course deceived
as to his mission, lie has resided in the vicinity
of this place for the last eight years. Brown was
a man of strict integrity, ot asocial disposition
and generous impulses, and of unwavering devotion to those whom he recognized as his friends.
He has suffered much for the past six years from
rheumatism, which had greatly shattered his constitution, and having some three weeks since contracted a violent cold, tliis produced inflammation
of the stomach, which ended his mortal career on
Saturday last.
The time when Major Gillespie was thus eur-
rouuded was in 1846. When he started out from
Los Angeles, Juan Flacco (lean John) pretended
to be a deserter from Gillespie's force, but by some
imprudence his true character became known to
the Mexicans, outside. He was fired upon, and
his horse killed under him almost immediately,
lie ran on loot twenty-seven miles, and touched
the ranch of a Mexican, where, by false representations, he procured another horse, having arrived
about day-break aud starting at sun-rise. Brown
arrived at Santa Barbara near eleven o'clock that
night, aud his horse Wftt killed by the ride. Capt.
Itobbins lurnished him with fresh horses also, and
he arrived late that evening at the ranch of Mr.
Burton who also furnished hoiseB. The next
mornir.g, alter a short rest, he started and arrived
at Monterey at night. Being unable to obtain aid
there for the Americans, he started the next mornir.g Tor San Francisco en an American horse owned
by Mr. Bye, which was furnhmed him by Captain
iiaddo\'.
At Monterey, Mr. Larkin, the American Consul,
AaAabsent, and Mr. Gi'cen, his clerk, gave him
letters to Anje! Castro, Antonio German, tud others on U12 road, which procured him fresh horsee.

He bud also a loiter to Captain Charles M. Weber,
who was at that time residing in San Jose, nnd
known to be in tbe American interest. Mr. Weber
was absent at the time of his arrival, but fortunately Thomas O. Larkin was there when he arrived,
at 12 o'clock, noon. In four hours' time he again
started, with horses furnished by Mr. Larkin, and
at eight o'clock at night reached San Francisco,
and delivered his dispatches, which produced tbe
desired effect, and aid was at once dispatched lo
the Americans in Los Angeles. The distance from

We, Herald, bad the pleasure of examining a
curious work of art, in tho possession nl'our old
friend Mr. D Hill, representing the Mission of£on
Gabriel, near Los Angeles, during ita most flourishing period.
This highly valuable landscape was executed in
oil, about 18;i"), in the city of Mexico, from a drawing made on the spot, between 1880-84,09 Mr.
Ferdinand Dieppe, of Berlin, who was formerly
trading on this coast for Messrs. Mirment & Co.,
a Mexican merchant firm. The executon, (aB our
friend informs us) is most faithful to nature, and
accessories as existing in 1828. It represents the
entire mission on a feast day in the Hpring ol the
year under a cloudless sky, with a religious procession leaving the church and Hie buildings in
complete order, with Californians, Indians, huts,
trees, hedges and animals, and the river Bowing
by; all according to the times. Old Friar Sanchez is in the foreground In his Francscan habit attended by his two Indian boys in their red dresses,
spciking to a foreign trader, and a number ol Indians, male and femnle are introduced dressed in
the fashion of the mission period—the women in
their bnyetas of red flannel, aud the men conforming to custom and nature.
The execution ot the work is exceedingly endit-
able to the artist—the sketch was made with the
best judgment and taste by the draughtsman, who
must have been highly competent a:id au fait, wilh
all his perceptive lacul ties alive. In the back gi ound
Mount San Bernardino rears his snow capped summit and wooded green sides, and (be neighboring
lulls are covered with a lively California May
verdure of emerald, flushed with the glowing
tinge of an afternoon sun. Tbe painting measures 33 by 28 inches, and is valuable not only as a
work of art, but as representing a magnificent California landscape, with historical accessories now-
buried forever in the grave of the past. It is the
only proper painting ever made of one of the mis-

cic merits is worthy of careful  preservation.
Tbe church buildings. Indians, etc., being clearly and faithfully delineated,' and in excellent proportions on tbe canvas, must cause it lo be held in
esteem by the old Californian or the man of taste.
Mr. Dieppe was a gentlmaii held in the highest esteem by the old settlers and the Missionary Fathers, as an intelligent worthy man, and is said to
have made a valuable collection of notes and O.tli-
fornia curiosities which he took with him to Ber-

tion of soil to great advantage. It is the only irrigation that can properly be applied to lauds de-

[Prom the Arlionian.
Recovkrt of Stock and Pu.visumust of Apaches.—A party of four Apaches, on or about the
29th ultimo, on one of tlieir thieving trips, as usual, visiled the ranch of Mr. Thomas Smith, an old
resident of this town, and succeeded in driving off
seven head of fat cattle, belonging to him. Immediately upon the loss being known, Mr. Smith
and four of his men followed in pursuit. After a
hard chase, ou the third morning, they suddenly
came upon their cump in the mountains, about six
miles lrom Santa Cruz, and a severe light at ouce
ensued. The Indians fired several shots, being
well supplied with powder and balls, and Bllghtlj
injured Mr. Smith's negro man,also fatally wounding a favorite and valuable mule, Mr. Smith and
party succeeded, however, in giving them their
deserts ; killing three, the fourth e.-:cu[iinj/, and
recovered all of the cattle, with the exception ol
