makes an authoritative denial of the stateim-nl
that Gov. Corwin is nota candidate for tho Speakership. It says that Corwin wishes it to be understood tbat he is a candidate, and tbat hia namo will
be presented to the House.
The Suspension bridge over the Sciota river, at
Portsmouth, fell to-day, killing two men.
AlbaSt, Nov. 16.—The Journal's figures make
Jones, Democrat, for Secretary of State, 212 abend
of Leavenworth, Republican. If tho Tribune's
figures are correct, theu tlio Joiunal's tables show
742 majority for Jones. Up to this time iho counties received officially without New York, King's
or Queen's counties, put Richmond, Democrat,
and Utica nominee, for State Eimineer, 340 ahead
of Story, Republican. As to Chapin, Republican,
for Canal Commissioner, and Forest, lor Stale
Prison Inspector, they both run ahead of Leavenworth.

Circumstantially that Corliuas' band captured
Brownsville on the ,11st ul... after five hours of
hard fighting, and was in full possession of the
town on the 1st of November.
J. Marks & Co., who'esale dry goods merchants
of this city, however, have letters direct from theii
house at Brownsville, dated Nov. 2d, 5 p. m., stating- "no rein for Cements had yet arrived. Cortinas,
however, has made no demonstration against US,

Mr. Marks and others here say that Miller is entitled to no credit, end think that the Rangers and
troops will reach Brownsville iu time to repel any
attack. Marks' letters cause disbelief in the previous Corpus Christi accounts of the 31st nit.
Five fires have occurred here since Saturday,
three of Which, however, were of trilling extent.
The other two were Ihe New Basin Row, consisting ol six stores, in Kempaut street; loss, $70,000.
Also nine squares embracing eighty smalt buildings above Cbippawa street, in the Fourth Dis
trict; loss, $100,000. Oue hundred families were
rendered houseless by the latter fire, which was
the work of an incendiary.
A heavy gale is now raging along the coast.
The weather is very cold here, and ice has made
its appearance.
The rebellion at Victoria, Mexico, had been
quelled, and the leaders had been shot. The troops
sent to quell it had marched.
Degollado's headquarters were still at San Luis.
The steamship Robert Waterman had been
abandoned, and is a total loss. Her cargo is being plundered by fishermen.
Snow fell in some parts of Mississippi on Sunday.
There were three deaths from yellow fever in
this city during last week.
Augusta, Ga., Nov. 14.—Tbe New Orleans True
Delta, of Friday, Bays Gen. Walker had arrived
in that city, and proposes to take command of a
party to relieve Brownsville. It is also reported
tbat active movements are being made in portions
of Texas to aid the inhabitants of that town against
the attacks ol tbe outlaws.
Nkw Okleans, Nov. 14.—The Picayune of tbe
12th says that Geu. Palfrey's brigade is willing to
go to Brownsville, if the funds are provided by
tbe public.
The authorities of the city are doing nothing
towards assisting the 1'exans, and the Picayune
urges the city to furnish money for an expediiiou
against the guerilla.

Washington, Nov. S.—The departure of Mr.
McLane, to-day, for Vera Cruz, is au incident in
our diplomacy worthy of note. He goes out with
full instructions, and sanguine ot concluding a
treaty, either ou the basis formerly proposed, or
of geueral alliance with Mexico—an alliance both
offensive and defensive, wbich will at once meet
all tbe symptoms of disease iu the body politic of
that most unfortunate Republic.—Mo. Rtpubiican.
Washington, Nov. 15.—The Postmaster at
Brownsville, writing to the Post Office Department, mentions that all the mail routes in that
quarter had been made impassable by the forces
acting under Cortinas. and the mail carriers had
been made prisoners. He says this is emphatically
a war of races and extermination.
Judge Douglas'condition has improved within
the last twenty-four hours, and his physicians con-
sidor him better this morning.
Washington. Nov. Ic.---The Board appointed
by the Navy Department to examine Maynard's
Breech Loading Carbine, say they think it recommends itself to a test ofthe naval service.
Indian   Troubles.

thenigbtof the 17th, a bold and dariug attempt
was made by a iw»e pJirty of Indians, who were
supposed to be Maricopas to murder the occupants
of a mail station, known as Sutton's, located at
tbe foot ofthe forty miledesert, on the Gila River,
besides setting fire to the house, and stealing all
the valuable stock ol tho Overland Mail Company,
stationed ai that point.
At the Caiion stutio:* of the Overland Mail Company, some sixteen miles from "Suttons," a party
of Maricopas Indians, on the 19th, surprised the
Company's herder, and took from him the cattle
under his charge.
A party of Apaches from Sonora visited the
Cassa Blanco Ranch a few miles this side of Fort
Buchanan, on tbe evening of tbe 16th, and succeed in stealing some nineteen bead ol fat cattle,
belouging to Mr. Ellis of San Ignacio in Sonora.
Fortunately the cattle being wild, the Indians
fearing pursuit were obliged to leave tbem.

of 450 of her passengers and crew, which occui
red during the gale on the morning ol Wednesday,
the 20th October, in Red Wharf Bay, which is '
uated about three miles to the Westward of fulfill Island, fctenai Straits, and six or seven to the
northwest of Beaumaris, on the coast of Wales,
some four hours sale fom Liverpool.
Tliis catastrophe, has in a marked manner cast
a gloom over this town; and in London a painful
sensation was experienced on the distie.sing oc
currence being made known there.
The United Stutim ami Nicaragua.
The following letter is*; Irom ihe late United
States Minnister to Nicaragua, General Lamar,
and gives a very Satisfactory account of the relations existing between the two countries:

Oknti.mbn:—In reply to your inqlries. I am
happy to state that a treaty between the United
States and Nicarngrta has been ratified by the latter government, and is acceptable to ours, by
which the door to peaceful and friendly emigration to Nicaragua is opened to Americans. This
has laid the foundation for a return of confidence
between the governments: it is ample iu its provisions for the protection of our citizens, in life,
property and religion; it is made in good faith on
tbe part ol'Niearagun, and if violated by her can
be enforced by onr Government, without hazarding tbe respect, of other nations. Should any inconsiderate citizens of ours forego iheir nationality, by marauding npon a Government which is
now in good relations with our own, it will bo
only a revival of thebucaneering of a past ngp,
when force and not reason, was the rule of nsitio-is.
The Administration has accomplished all in
ils negotiations with Nicaragua that imyht to ho
desire by Americans; and if (be result haa been
tardily reached, the delay by that Government is
due quite as much to the dread br filibuster invasion as to Kuropean intrigue or mennce.
Two questions alone remain to lie settled; tlio
claims ol our citizens against the Government, and
the opening of the Transit route. The former
wil! be adjusted. I have no doubt, to the satislac-
tion of all parties by joint commission of both
Goverinents, and with regard to the latter, although some difficulties continue to exist, which
may be further complicated, still much Is to bo
hoped from the intelligence and recent experienco
of the leading men of Nicaragua, when appealed
to by the justice, aa well as energy of our Government.

The Steamer Cortes.
The Atlantic nnd Pacific steamship company's
steamer Cortes, after a considerable detention, arrived safely at -Sau Francisco last week. We
copy the following, wbich duly accounts lor her
protracted absence :*—
Memokand..—The Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company's steamship Cortes. R. II. Horner,
commander, left Panama November 9, at 10:,'J0 a.
m., with 553 passengers and United States mails,
from New York. October 20, per Company's steamship North Star, and passengers and United States
mails from New Orleans, October 23. via Havana,
per Company's steamship Daniel Webster. The
Cortes was detained iu consequence of the North
Star running on a coral reef, October 25, at 4 A.
M.. olf Plana or French Key (one of the Bahama
group of islands), sitiiatid on the western side of
Mumguiim, passage, where she lay for 6 dnys and
10 hours. After throwing overboard some 450
tons coal and lightening the ship by landing the
passengers on the island, she was finally got off
uninjured, and the passengers re-embarking, she
proceeded on her voyage, stopping at Kingston,
Jamaica, for coal and provisions, and arriving at
Aspinwall November 8. The steamship Daniel
Webster carried for New York most of the passengers that left San Francisco October 20, per steamship Uncle Sam. November 14 and 15, off Te-
hunantepec, encountered a most severe gale from
the North, with a terrific head sea. Old shipmasters pronounced the weather to be moreboisterou::
than any tbey had ever experienced ou the Pacific. The ship behaved beautifully. November 17.
at 8 a. m., arrived at Acapulco : took in coal and
provisions and left same day at 10:30 l*. m.

A letter from Sliangliae. dated August 2d, saya
that the Cited Slates steamship Powlmlten, witli
Minister Ward, had just arrived from Peiho. Tho
following statement was furnished by her offlofiTS:
On the Kith of July the Powhatten was anchored
oifPeiting, when an Imperial edict arrived that
the American Minister and his suit of twenty
should bo escorted with all honor to Pekin.
On the 2Qlb, Mr. Ward and suit landed, were
received by an escort and conducted to Pekin with
every show of respect. They first traveled forty-
five miles across the country in covered carts,
striking the Piho ten miles above the Tzu Telng-
theiiGe. proceeded in junks within eleven miles of
Pekin. whence they again took carta to the capital.
Tho trip occupied eight and ahalf days. Remained at Pekin fifteen days, during whiJi timo
they were confined to their quarters, uot as prisoners, for they were at libertyat any moment to
walk oui. Tbe Commissioner refused them tho una
ofborses and guides, l.aving it optional with Mr.
Ward to remain or not, as he pleased.
Tliey would doubtless, however, have closed tho
gates entirely, had not Mr. Ward (alien a linn
stand at tha fir-st interview,s;.y ing, that as soon as his
airVtiiSfview and demand liis return under escort.
It seems the Emperor was very anxious to see
Mr, Ward, but that lie also insisted upon his performing kalew, that is, prostrating him-elf ninu
times with his head to the ground, which was positively refused.
The result was, that on the I4ib dny it was finally concluded to receive the President's letter
at Pekin, and send Mr. Waid back to Petting to
Change treaties, and the next day they returned.
At Petting, oil the 16th, the treaties were exchanged, and an English prisoner named John
Powell was given up, having proclaimed himself
an American.
The United States steamers Mississippi anil
Powbaltan were at Shanghai, and the Toirewan
at the Gulf of Peieheli, aud the Georgetown a*
Japan.

Pioneer Press?" seems to have created considerable newspaper comment, and not without success.
I would state for the purpose of enlightening tbe
public and those most interested—tbe California
Pioneer.—that the whereabouts of the "original
Press" has been ascertained, Samuel Brannnn,
of San Francisco has received a letter from tlm
Sutter Creek Foundry, informing him that a portion of tbe frame had been broken up, but the
plates, and other larger portions, were in the pos-
session of the proprietors of tbe foundry, who
e very kindly offered to forward them to Mr.
Brannaii.' The reel has been turned into a gavel
for the Royal Arch Chapter of that place.
Arrival ok Railroad Cars.—Hy the ship War-
hawk, from Boston, says the Sacramento Onion,
C. L. Wilson & Co., received 1537 bundles, packages and car stock, including the passenger-ems
for the California ventral Raihoad.    Tbe cars, etc.

opening of eighteen miles of the road in January.

force of the entire country is officially stated at
two million seven hundred and seventy-six thousand seven hundred and seventy-six. A formidable number fruly ; yet, to render such an army effective in actual battle, we think that more regard
must be paid to discipline, drill, familiarity with
the use of weapons, and some change in the habits of life. How many militia meetings are there
in dill'erent States, that are only intended by a,
few officers as a mere matter of lormal routine,
and almost without men of rank or file I In New
York and one or two oilier great cities, the mils-
i are considered as burlesques, while ibe "mili-
fines" aro extremely un popular, and very imperfectly paid all over the Union. Tho real
trength ol a country however, in a military sense,
s to be found in the spiritof the people. And in
this view of tho mailer, doubtless, an English
officer of distinction, who hsd traveled among us,
was induced to say: "In no nation of the world
could un army be more promptly improvised than
in lhe United Slates," The Boston Traveler, iu
closing an able review on the subject, observes
