In au introduction to the writings of Wasbing--
fon, pnb:i;hijd n few years ago iu France, thai
distinguished Prime Minister and statesman, M,
Guizot thus remarks :
"Washington bad not those brilliant and extraordinary qualities which strike tbe imagination of
men at the first glance. He did not belong to the
class of men of vivid genius, who pant for an opportunity of display, are impelled by great
thought, or great passions, and diffuse around
them the wealth of their own natures before any
outward occasion or necessity calls for its employment.
Free from a'l internal restlessness, end the
promptings nnd pride of ambition, Washington
did not seek opportunities to distinguish himself
and never aspired to lbs* gdeuraUon -1 ;-.^ world.
His spirit so resolute, bis heart so 1<.,'!;.", wa- -. -o-
fouudly calm and modest. Capable of rising to
the level with the highest destiny, he might have
.lived in ignorance of bis real power without suffering for it, and have found in tl cultivation qj
his estates; a satisfactory employment (or those
energetic faculties which were to be pn
to the task ofcommauding armies and f
Government."
The Gieat Lord Chancellor Erskine, thus addressed Washington ou his retirement from the
Presidency :
l,I have taken the liberty to Introduce ycur
august and immortal name in a sentence whieh is.
to be found in the book which I send you. I have
a large and valuable acquaintance among the most
valued and exalted classes of men, but you. are
the only human being for whom I ever felt an awful reverence, I prt-y God to grant a long and
serene evening J;o a life so gloriously devoted to
the universal happiness oi the world."
Phillips the great British orator, expressed himself as follows :
■'•It matters very little wbati_-medIat-8pot may
