A. l.aity Free Mason.
Hon, Elizabeth St. Leger was the only female ever initiated into the ancient mystery of
Free Masonry. How she obfained this honor we
shall lay before our readers. Lord Doneraile,
Miss St. Leger's father, a very zealous Mason, had
arrant, and occasionally opened Lodge at the
Doneraille House, his sous and some intimate
friends assisting ; and it !b said that never were
the Masonic duties more rigidly performed than
by tbem. Previous to the initiation of a gentleman to. tbe first steps ot Masonry, Miss St. Leger,
who was a young girl, happened to be in au apartment adjoining the room generally used asa lodge
room. This room, at the time, was undergoing
some alterations; among other things, the wall
was considerably reduced iu oue part. The young
lady having board the ¥#ictM- »f A,*, Frae Masos
and prompted by the curiosity natural to all to
see this mystery, so long and so secretly locked
up from public view, had the courage to pick a
brick from the wall with her scissors, and wilness-
ed the ceremouy through the first two steps. Cu"
riosity satisfied, fear at once took possession of
hermind. There was no mode of escape except
through" the very room where the concluding-
part of the second step was still being solemnized,
and that being at the far end, and the room a very
large one, she had resolution sufficient to attempt
to escape that way ; and with a light but t: emb
ling step, glided along unobserved, laid her hand
on the door, and gently opening it, before her
stood a giim looking Tyler, with a drawn sword.
A shriek that pierced through every apartment,
alarmed the members of the Lodge, who, all rushing to the door, and finding that Miss St. Leger
had been in the room during the ceremony, in the
first paroxysm of their rage, resolved on her death;
but frern the moving supplication of her younger
brother, her life was saved on condition of her
going through the whole of the solemn ceremony
she had unlawfully witnessed. This she cousented
to, and they conducted the beautiful and terrified
younti lady through those trials which are sometimes more than enough for masculine resolution ;
little thinking that they were taking into the bosom of their craft a member that would afterwards
reflect lustre on the annals of Masonry. The lady
was cousin to General Anthony St. Leger, Gover"
nor of St. Lucia, who Instituted the interesting
race and the celebrated Doncaster St.Leger stakes.
.,'Whenever a benefit was given at the theatres in
Dublin or Cork for the Masonic Female Orphan
Asylum, she walked at the head of the Free Masons with her apron and other insignia of Free
Masonry, and sat in the front row of the stage
box. The house was always crowded on these occasions. Her portrait is in tbe lodge room of every Lodge in Ireland.

Scenery and Kuins on tbe Gila.
An officer in the army, writing from a camp on
the Gila, where supplies for the troops engaged
in the campaign against the Apaches have bteo
coliected, describes the country adjacent, and the
ruins which mark the early existence there of another and more civized race :—■
"The Gila here is a clear rapid stn am— discharging a considerable volume of water, skirted
on both sides with cottonwood trees, and an undergrowth of willow, gooseberry aud wild currant
bushes. The country is interesting, on account o1
the ruins of buildings and enclosures seen everywhere, and the pieces of broken pottery that strew
the ground. That, the country was once densely
populated cannot be doubted, aud by a race far in
advance of the present Indian occupants, in arts
aud architecture, their painted pottery and fallen
dwellings fully prove. In front of my tent are
ruins of a building and enclosure : I have
collected many pieces of pottery, pointed aud
glazed, which retain the colors, notwithstanding
time and exposure. The painting is checkered and'
striped, red and black colors ou a white ground.
At what time this people occupied the country,
whence they came and where gone, are subject.
for the antiquarian, but will scarcely be known
until that "great day when all things shall be revealed.'
■' An old Navajo chief says, ' they are gone
(putting both hands up, and towards the South)
away there;" but they have no tradition in regard
to them. A Pit hi a chief, now here, says hie people have a tradition of Montezuma aud of Cortes,
the Spaniard, but nothing relative to this extinct
race. A probable conjecture is that they were th
ancient Aztecs, or a portion of them, and that tbey
were driven south or exterminated by the faith le
savHge Apache. The country is mountainous generally, with many beautiful valleys and canons ;
timber grows along the water courses and in the
canon, of the mountains, and on the mountain
sides; the "mesas' below the valleys, hills and
prairies are covered with gama grass. The Indians
fired the mountains in our vicinity on our arrival
at thij point, and most Of the country has been
burned over. For two days wc contended against
the flames to preserve our camp."

PACIFIC li.wr.KOAD.
The necessity ttn- a Mililary Railroad to the Pacific is enlarged upon; the constitutional power1
of the Uuited States to assist in constructing it, or
to build it entire, is asserted.
The difficulties and the expenses of constructing
a Military Railroad to connect our Atlantic and
Pacific States, have been greatly exaggerated.
The distance on the Arizona route, near the 32d
parallel of north latitude, between the western
boundary of Texas and the Rio Grande, and the
eastern boundary of California on the Colorado,
from the best explorations row within cur knowledge, does not exceed'lour hundred and seventy
miles, and the face of the country is. In Ihe main,
favorable. For obvious reasons, the Government
ought not to undertake the work itself, by mean"
ot its own agents. This ought to be committed to
other agencies which Congress might assist either
by grunts of land »r money, or both, upon such
terms and conditions as they may deem most ben
ehc'al to ihe country.
Provision might thus be mnde, not only for the
safe, rapid and economical transportation of
troops and munitions of war, but also ofthe public mails. The commercial interests of the whole
country, both East and West, would be promoted
by such a rdad ; and, abov■■ all, it would be a powerful additional bond of union. And, although
advantages of kind cannot confer constitutional
power, yet they may furnish auxiliary arguments
in favor of expediting a work, which, in my judgment, is clearly embraced witbin the war-making
power.
For these reasons I commend to the friendly
consideration ol Congress, the subject ofthe Pacific Railroad, without finally committing mysell to
any particular route.

I commend to your consideration the report of
the department in relation to the establishment of
the overland mail route from the Mississippi river
to San Francisco, California. The route wa9 ser
lected with my nil! concurrence, as'the one, in my
judgment b::st calcnlaied to attain the important
objects contemplated by Congress.
Iu relation to the signing of bills, the President
avows his deter mi nation as follows :
"For my own part, I have deliberately determined

How the President, at least two days previous to

This was the subject ol a lecture delivered by
Mr. Pitts, in the Tabernacle, New York, recently.
The lecture demonstrated that the rise of a great
nationality was promised in an age of intelligence
energy, and locomotion, and argued that this was
not literally the restoration of the Jews, but the
proplvbcy was realized in the political and religious organization of the UniU-d Stales, That this
country arose when and where it was premised, at
the end of 1290 prophetic days from the deduction of Jerusalem, which period terminated on
the -1'b of July, 1776. He said that the land pic"
tared in the prophecy of Daniel, was to be inhabited by a people gathered out of all nations ; that
it was to be located between two seas—the Eastern and Western—that its cities and villages
should have neither walls nor gates, nor bars, and
that it was to be first visited by the ships of Spain ;
that emigration should come for the freedom of
worshipping God, and that it was to be a republic,
and that this republic slnmld be an epoch in the
history ol humanity, to learning, agriculture, commerce and trade ; that the United States was the
stone kingdom promised by Daniel—the man child
born of the Virgin Woman ofthe Wilderness—the
land shadowing with wings. In fact, that this
great country and govrnmeni was a child of Pro
vidence, and was nurtured and rai.ed up as the
model government of the world, to which the empires of the earth would finally conform. But before Republicanism became world-wide, the great
battle of civil and religious liberty on one side,
raid ecclesiastical despotism on tbe other, would
come oft on the field of Armagiddon.
True or false, the speaker evid ntly placed his
arguments clearly and logically before an appreciating audience.—New York Paper.

" That the Central America was not found and1
