Mo:n.-*.ir:\T to thi-: BSoBDEBBD BOTLB¿B.—Th? citizens ui' Louisville have erect ed a monument to
W. 11. <;. Butler, the teacher shot by Matt, Ward.
It is an elegant piece of workmanship, built of
Italian marble, about ten feet in height. The inscriptions on its sides arc as follows:
■' William II. O. Buttler, born in Jefferson
tajim-iy, tndiana, Octobers, 1825,
died at Louisville, K*y., Nov.
, * 2d,l'855." '■-"'
On tlte reverse:
11 A man without fear and without reproach ;
of gentle and retiring disposition; of
clear iBBfla .vigorous mind ; an ac- "
complEshed ¿scholar; a devoted nndsSieeSSrul teacher ; a mees and
¡nimble Christian."
yin jJhdNqEÜjjpijte :
"He fell by tin: hand of violence, in the presence
of his loving pupils—a'martyr to his iidel-
ity in the discharge of his duty,"
Ou thc South side :
" Tii is monument is erected by his pupils aud a
bereaved community, to show their *p-
preeiatiou of his worth, and to
perpetuate their horror ."'
at his murder."
This is not more a niGirjiment to the murdered
man than to the murderer; for, on the stone, to
the gaze ofall eyes, is his crime engraved in words
tbat no atonement ean wash away, liow'much hotter for the criminal's own memory if he had suffer-

Some years ago, au awkward cliap in Westers
New York, who obtained liis living by forging in a
blacksmith shop, hired a iiorso one day to carry a
load of wrought nails to the next town, a few miles
distant. While descending a steep hill, the -smith
gave hia hor?e a few extra cuts, thinking to accelerate hid «peed in a place where graduation seconded the motions of the wagon, but the steed stumbled, floundered into the ditch, and kicked the—
bucket. The blacksmith, upou turning tho body
over, discovered that the anatomical harmony ol
the beast's neck *iM destroyed, that the spine was
dislocated beyond the" bone-setter's art, and that in
fact the 'boss' was dead.
With a rueful countenance he repaired to the
owner ofthe nag, and a^ked what Was to be done.
The reply was, -'You must pay for the horse-"'—
The blacksmith demurred, and went to consult a
lawyer.
Th"; lawyer happened to bo away ¿from home,
bjjt his wilet who was prone to mischievous fun,
thought she saw in the-clieiifc food for a little sport,
and inviting him to cuter tiie house, remarked that
she sometimes gave legal advice iu her Jinsband's
, «aa requested htm to" state" his case
plainly.
"Very well," said the blacksmith, seating him-
:self, leisurely, "I'll spose a ease."
"If you please—tliat will do as well as to state
your own," said the handsome attorney.
"Well! yer see its just like this: tí'posinyouwas
an old hoss—an1 I should drive you to mill. And
«•fiosiu 1 should cut you up the leas test mite on thc
flank, aad you should rear up and kick up and
break the lirecchiu, and finally yet* should fall iuto
a ditch, and break yer cussed heel:—who'd pay fbr
yc?—Would IV asked the excited Yulen.i, in a
voice of thuuder. 'No, I'd be hammered into horseshoe nails, and driven into the devil's cloven foot
afore I'd pay the Ehstred cent!' ¡;jj^i;^i;^^^~
The lady decided that lie had a clear case, aud
might go ahead without fear of damages.

"Go, and mayGtod.be with you and keep you.
my noble Henri I"
One instant more, ami lie had vaulted into his
Saddle, and at tho head of his men-at-armp, was
dashing out ofthe courtyard. Their lance points
flashed like diamonds ia tiie moonlight, and the
steel shod hoofls of their horses clanged merrily on
the stones. Ere the outer gate was passed, the
count turned in his saddle and waved a mute flÜOU
to his loved lady; one moment his white crest
mingled with his charger's (lowing mane, t-hene.vl
he was gone, and thegate closed behind him.
Long stood Lady Blanche in that castle door,
with the moon lightingup her sad, pale (ace ; lon^
alter ber husband's loria had disappeared from her
sight, she stood attentively listening to thc sound
ofthe steel shod hoofs, growing faint and more
fainter, till even her anxious ear could eatcii no
further sound ; then witii a sigh, she turned to her
desolate apartments.
The drawbridge ivas secured, the portcullis lowered by her orders, and a vow she registered, to admit no stranger tothe hospitality of her hoard, until her husband returned. Many noble ladies did
the same while their lords wore absent and in peril.
Many teaas were .shed after thc fight of'Kouccsval-
les. The Moors fought like demons. Thc smoke
hung like a pall over the battle Held ; a mingled
clamor as of thousands in agony, .«¡note on the ears
of the despairing Frenchmen. Backwards and ior-
i wards rode the knights and paladins, cheering
and shouting to the men. Foremost was Count
Guarinois, apparently fresh and unwearied. "On.
on to thc rescue! Closeiip! France and victory!''
he shoul,ed,*but to no purpose. The column was
broken and panic struck, and borne backwards in
wild con'usion. The heart oi'Gunrinois.sank when
he beheld the despair and wild retreat ofthe men.
Knights and men-at-arms all seemed to be struck
alike with despair and terror. One more pffijri the
brave Guarinois made. Waving bisiaaoe on high
and putting spurs to his ¿ral hint charger, he rushed
forwards, his white plume streaming iu thc air, and
his olear, high tones distinctly beard.
"Fly not, cravens—ily not J Death to thy Moors!
Forward tend conquer!"
Alas it availed nothing. Thc soldiers pushed
not forwards', and the Moors closed around the devoted warrior and his icw remaining men-at-arms,
trusty followers, who would not leave their lord
in his great peril. Surrounded as he was, he still
fought with desperation, still shouting "France and
victory!" The Frenchmen heard, but they only
made a faint attempt of rallying to his rescue. Ilis
followers were cut down one by one, yet still iie
fought. Laying aside liis lance he seized his ponderous battle-axe. liaising ttimeelfin iii;- stimrps,
he ¿wielded it wiih wonderful strength, and at each
blow a Moorish knight .rolled in the dust, and a
horse careered riderless, over that bloody plain.
But one man cannot hold his ground against numbers, and a well directed blow from a lasce unhorsed the now exhausted but dauntless cavalier Guarinois. As the Moor who had overthrown him was
about to cleave his head from his body, the Kiflfir
Marlotes, one of thc seven Moorish king.-, das'hed
up.
"Slayhim not, slay h,m not.''-' lie shouted, "but
boar him off» prisoner.-''
The day closed iu, and darkness .spread its welcome cloak over that held, which i ad b.vn Ihe
scene ofthe bloody an 1 fetal light of licnce.svallcs.
O, weep, ye men of France over your defeat!
Weep, thon beautiful Lady Blanche, fbr thy brave
Henri lies in a Moorish dungeon '? Hide your heads
in shame, yc cravens, who came not to thc rescue
of tho brave, true Guarinois!
■ In an apratment ofthe palace sat two maidens ;
Xarifa aud Madisma, daughters of King Marlotes.

joy I will receive thee."
A derisive smile played for a moment on his
handsome faeo, 1ml Guarinois answered not.

Kindly Uie King Marlotes spoke} r<;r Era loved
his noble captive, and would fain win him for himself and daughter. Nut one moment did the count
i,pause to think, but clear and promptly came thi;.-
: answer.
"God forbid, and Man his dear mother, that I
should renounce the faith of Christ, mid adhere to
Allah. I want no ".-¡fe. I have one in my sunny
France; I do not need another one in Spain, No
kindly though you have .spoken, and generously
offered me thy child, I cannot abjure my faith OT

lung Marlutes*;- eyes hashed, and he clenched his
hands ¡n i\igo.
"Think once again. Count Guarinnis. Tffc offer
ofa king's daughter shoold not be lightly refased.
Accept, and life, liberty, and power are thine, henceforth. .Kefuse. and the lowest dungeon I possess,
is thy life-long abode!''
No muscle of thc count's face moved, his eve
quailed not .before the flewe rage of liie king. No v.ilhin liiy balk

his heart sank. Finn nml calm Be stood in Ids high

that his answer would shut him onl fiorever*frora
the pleasant light of day. Again he repented, and
his voice was clear and high : ,
"I cannot change my faith, or break my vow for
love or life."
Marlotes sprang from his scat in fierce rage, and

''Ha. ha, so thou art caught by tin- reports concerning this brave infidel captive knight!-"'
Three days had Henri Guarinois been imprisoned, though his piuco of confinement was light and
large, aud he liad been treated with ail kindness by
tho King Marlotes. He was aroused from a revery

The jailer replied :—
■ " These trumpet sounds do not announce feast or

Springing to his icet, the pale Guarinois spake
out :
'• Xow help rae God were I but armed and moim-

tlieir food full soon, for whatever the height, Í

The jailer marvelled. Would this pale knight,
who in chains liad languished seven weary year?,
attempt what gallant practised spearmen had failed in?"
"List to mc, sir jaiier. Give mc my trusty steed,
if he is not long since dead, all caparisoned as of
old ; give me the trusty lance I 'brought with me
from home, and my good armor, and 1 will win the
prize or die."
The jailer spake with wonder in his voice :
"Seven years of gloom sod imprisonment have
not robbed thee of thy brave spirit. 1 will repair
to the king Marlotes, ami report to him thy words.-"-'
What hope has sprung up in thy heart of steel,
brave (iuarinois? The jailer sought and olifüiiu-il
admittance to thc king. The jailer found him seated in his listed ring, with a black cloud on his
brow. He whispered to him the captive's boast.
Marlotes laughed in scorn, then ¡urning to his
knights he said :
"Listen, and you .shall hear brave tilings. My
prisoner Guarinois has Ihis day made the boast that
wero he but mounted oil his old gray steed, with

failed to gain, or yield his life blood at my feet."
