LATER FROM NICARAGUA.

By the arrival ofthe Orizaba we have dates
from Nicaragua to Oct. 14th, ten days later than
the news bVought by the Sierra Nevada.
As we informed our readers last week, says the
Nicttfdguense, the allied forces having advanced
n Managua, Gen Walker ordered the garrison
at that*place,-amounting to three bundled and
fifty men, to fall back immediately on Granada,
in order to allow the enemy to occupy that place.
This they did; and it was the tiaanimous wish of
ery American in Granada that their apparent
success would rns'pTre them with sufficient cour-
to attack this city. Such an. attack could be
followed only with one result—a most disastrous
defeat. -The citizens—that is, the persons not belonging to the army, but engaged in trade and
attending to the civil business of the State—
formed themselves Into a company to assist in the
defence of this city, and participate in the glory
of a victory. But as the enemy would not c*>me,
Gen. Walker, having received a reinforcement
from the United States, as wei! as two mountain
howitzers, and shells, grapeshot, etc., advanced
on to Masaya to give them battle;
On the 11th Oct., at It a. itfj Gen. Walker
arched from Granada and encamped before Masaya ut 10 p. if. that night.
There was some skirmishing during the night.
At daylight the battle cotsmene'ed, and the enetny
were dispersed by a fur,ious charge ofthe rifles,
under cover of the bombs from the b'swiizers, and
the Plaza of Masaya captured. The fight woM
(hen carried on from house to house, but the enemy were filially driven from the place. The enemy numbered 2500, and Walker's force SOO or 900'
Walker lost only two men. Immense numbers of
the enei'ny were' kille'iT.
On'th3 morning of the 13th of October. Gen.
Walker received information that a large body r.f
the enemy had marched from the vicinity of Masaya to Granada. He immediately started in pur
suit. Before the arrival of Walker ihe enemy
made an attack on Granada, but Were repillsed by
the garrison', numbering 150 Americans under'
Gen.'Fry. with cons'derable loss. They t&eh got
into the houses and attempted to cut their way into
the centre of the city Gen. Walker arrived early
in the morning and routed the enemy with considerable slaughter. Only ten Americans were killed
Tt is expected that the victories of Masaya and
Granada have put an end to the war in Nicaragua.
EETATLS OF THE BATTLE OF "MASATA.
The Am*ericans entered Masaya by the way
known as the middle road. They had scarcely appropriated to themselves a place to spend the
night, when the enemy began to shoot in the direction in which our soldiers were encamped. This
random shooting was kept up for aboui two hours,
but there were not any of the Americans killed.
Fotir were wounded, crtie only of whom' is dangerously so.
Parties of the Rangers and Lancers of the ene-
mv came in contact several times, and the latter
were instantly repulsed with loss. Onfee during
the night a patty of Lancers came up to the very
door of the house in which a body of Americans
were quai tcred, and Bred their guns.' Not one
American was touched, but several of the enemy
were made to bite the dust. One American boy
a'bout fourteen years of age, who was with the
soldiers,.shot the bugler ofthe Lancers .n this
Charge—a feat of which he left very proud. The

us proclaimed that the enemy were also furnished
with the Minie rifle.
Aboft'i dayfight on the morning ofthe 12th the
battle began. The American forces were stationed on atr eminence. The enemy were' seen in
\tirge numbers at a distance of about five' hundred
yards. They fired at us with a large gun and
seemed (it was too dark to determine theii ni'o-

Our men, who had been: some' lime standing in
lines, were ordered to advance'. They moved on
about one hundred yards. The hOWit/ers continued to throw shells until they got in* j=ight of the
church in the upper plaza. The First Rifles were
now in sight of the church—a shell wai
plaza, and the word was given to charge.

the General's aids, Mahon and Gist, accompanied
them. The church and the houses surrounding it
were entered in a minute, and when Gist returned
and said, ''General, the plasfa is taken !;' a shout
of triumph rent the air.
After breakfast the Americans agaiu commenced operations. A well organized party of gap.

Almost every house was full of the enemy. They
were driven steadily back from one lo the other
until tht-y were at length all in the large Plaza.
They thus fought all day. The enemy were ly
ing in all directions, but, wonderful to relate,- we
lost only two men, and one of these was killed by
being so close to the enemy that the bursting of
one of our own bombs took effect upon liim.
Before night General Walker had taken up qnar
ters about midway between the churches. Ilia
staff were armed with Sharpe's carbines, and did
good execution during the day in pickingoffsome
of the enemy. Among those who distinguished
themselves as good shots were Col. E.J. C. Kcwen
and Lieut. Col. Frank Anderson.
About midnight the enemy evacuated Masaya*
and marched' upon Granada, thinking doubtless
that in the absence of Walker it would fall at*.
easy prey.
DETAILS OF THE BATTLE OF"' G11AXADA.
The gallant defence of Granada by Gen.- Fry,
with his one hundred and fifty Americans, has
been briefly narrated above, but when the enemy,
found they couid n it enter the Plaza, tiiey went
around to the houses of seven persons, and murdered them in a shocking manner.
Among these who lost their lives was a Mr-
Wheeler who bad been sent here to distribute
bibles by the Bible Society of New York, the Rev.
Mr. Ferguson, and a M r. Lawless, who had been a
merchant here for some years.
About 8 o'clock on the morning of the 13th —
the anniversary of the day on which he first took
Grenada—Gen. Walker and his force were with
in gunshot of the Jalteba church. On a slight
eminence in the road, the enemy had erected a
barricade and placed a cannon. There must have
been a force of three hundred men at least defending this spot, and they did certainly defend it
with the spirit of desperation. Our men advanced to within fifty yards of them under a most
galling cross-fire. At this point, so intensely hot-
was the fire that they were stopped for about
twenty seconds.. At this juncture. Gen. Walker
himself appeared at their head. The sight of him
made them invincible. They charged like enraged lions, and the enemy fled in every direction,
leaving their cannon on the field. They then
rushed inio the city, attacking tlie places in which
the enemy had fut'tified themselves, and in, less
than three-quarters of an hour the whole opposing
forces were steking for safety by hiding iu the
bushes, and endeavoring to escape from the city
by every available source.
The numbers of the enemy killed in Granada is
truly astonishing. In many oi the houses they
lie piled up iu do^eus ; they are lying on the
streets, on the door-steps and in the out-hon es.
They were killed in large numbers in ihe bushed-;
whole bungo loads were killed while they were
endeavoring to escape by the lake, and intelligence is every hour arriving of where ten and
twenties of bodies have been discovered in fhe
yards. The guard-house is nearly full of prison-
soners, and others whebave been endeavoring to
escape are being, while we write, continually
brought in. There were not more than ten Americans killed altogether. Sotae oftho'sewere killed by running from their positions too soon atter
they had heard ofthe arrivaV ofthe troops from
Masaya. There are probably fifteen or twenty
wounded. Among the wounded we regret to an-
nouiice John Tabor, proprietor of El Nitara-
giiense, whose leg has b en broken above the knee
by a musket ball; and Major A. Giilis. We have
not had time to collect a lisli of ail the killed and
wounded.

Louis Dostcb,-about forty years of age, committed
sircide yesterday morning at the Globe Hotel, on
r>upout street, near Washington, by taking strychnine: It appears tbat Dostchf until lately had
beenlivingin Sacramento with his wife,but some
disagreement occurring, tbey separated, and he
came down to this city to reside. He was a jeweller by trade, and not finding work there, he made
up his mind to seek employment here. A few dnys
after his arrival, he heard that his wife in Sacramento was be :f#ng improperly, and he resolved
to put himself out of existence. A small phial,
about half filled wilh strychnine, was found upon

promptness and decision in Seizing arms and munitions of war, and breaking up a conspiracy that

the doings of a* body of reactionists, and yesterday came in possession'of sufficient proof positive'
to seize upon the men and their arms. In a miserable house in' the' Callejon Ave Mima the arms:
were found. The character of th'e persons encaged in this conspiracy is much the saiiie as those'
engaged in the attempt at revolt iii the Monastery'
of San Francisco. This is no dOnbt the last dying'
gasp or the anti-government party in this City.
The Stasisw Question-.—Th'e advie'ea by ths'
Mexico are extremely contradictory with regatd to*
the Spanish question. These cau lie no doubt,'
however, but that the acts of the present Minister,
Senor Alvarez, have been disapproved of hy his
Government, and that he will be dis-placed by another Minister.-
Puebla.—The laSti advices we hare from Puebla
represent that place in a quiet state. Another
conspiracy had been discovered in that city on the'
night of the 23d of September, which was exten-'
sively planned. It was gotten up by some petty
officers of the Vine,-but was fortunately discovered
in time to be crushed without any trouble. The'
vigilance of Gov. Traconis and his trusty officers'
deserve every praise. i
Resuscitation*.—We learn with pleasure that
the Siglo and Indeptmdant are to commence their
publication again.

Valley.—Several ho'rses have been stolen within-
the last week from from the Californians, in and
ai.out the Pajaro Valley. Every thing indicates'
an organized band of horse thieves in that vicinity. Some of them are prowling a'bout Watsou-
ville. The native Californians Say that the band
are under the direction of the celebrated robber
chieftain, Joaquin Murietta, Who has rhturned
from Mexito. We were told yesterday that he had
been seen in this county by a mr.n who'knew him,
and that a partner of b'is, called Pantellou, staid

We have no doubt that Pantellon, Who har* been
e'en in Watsouville, and has been t'u its vicinity
or several days1, is connected With1 these horse

It is, however, proper' to' state that nearly or quite'
