states:
"That upon diluting one ounce of this gum in
two ouncis of cold water. T had a fine, gltttmoofi
paste, which I have used in sealing envelopes and
other packages.' I have also caused it to be mixed
withstareli, in the application to linen, and, in
both instances, have no hesitation in saying, that
it is equal to the article of which it must soon become a popular substitute, hi the first form, the
Indian Department is permitted thcprivilege of its

sealed up the box with it, and will use it ou the

Ttira=! mid-winter ** the ground was slightly cov-
erel with snow, which a chilling north wind had
been (lrifiing in fcath:-ry ííukes all d-.iy. The tn.-c,
were stripped of thpir green foliage and looked
dreary; the ground was strewn v.-itli the sear ami
yellow loaf, but the gloomy ¡ace of nature did not
present a more melancholy scene than the interior
ofthe little cottage which stood nestling beneath
tho.-o large leafless trees. 1 was then but ten years
of age; but the scene I am trying to picture is as
ire h yet in my memory a!s if it was but yesterday.
In a coffin in a corner o ¡'the room lay the form of
my fal her. My mother gathered her little orphans
around it. to look, for tne last time, upon that dear
lace. Oh I how well do I remember her heart-break-
íag sobs, the scalding tears that traced each other
down her pale chw.-ks as she kissed hi;- smik¡;n e'.:>'ik.
n,nésmoothed back the damp hair from his cold
b,,i>w. amt boM u -, in broken acwwtft. Btitfled by boI*,
thai, we ""ere fatherless; tltat henceforth A:.
no one to support our weakness but a poor, feeble
mother, and bade us look to God for help. Oh!
how my heart ached as I looked forward to the future ; all looked dark and dreary ; but the coilin
lidw=as shutdown and ali that remained of my
father W=ás conveyed to its hist resting place. Tlie
clods fell upon tiie coffin with a hollow sound that
Chilled the life-blood in my veins. The grave was
filled up, and soon was covered over with grass and
flowers.
The muddy waves of life again ebbed and flowed ;
my young heart, too, again began to smile within
mybnast. 1 was evc-n happy, and began to forget
the solemn lesson I had learned.
Years rolled around, bringing surprising changes
With each successive day. but I heeded them not,
forraeh revolution ofthe wheel of time, brought
me nearer to maturity, and the hearts of children
always have the future pictured in brightest colors.
At length the diminishing aspect of our resources
and the failing health of toy motheradmonishedu-,
to try and replenish our purse, and also to i>egain
her ha-nlxh, braving a journey across the barren
plains, to run the risk of sickness and perhaps death,
to withstand hardship aud privation. I left ih
home of'my childhood, the companion'of my youth
and ail the endearments of social life and youthfui
pleasure. We voyaged onward, faltering not in
our course, until Death marked to himself another
victim irom oor little band. The venerable protector of my Childhood—-her. whose careful attention had been ihe solace for every sorrow, she was
struck down by the sickle of Death. J saw his
traces on her lips and brow. I saw the blow was
descending but had not power to avert it. She,
too, was dead! The last link broken, the last bond
5 00 riven, the last hope blasted! We laid her to rest
I on the slope of the mountain. No shroud enveloped her form, no coffin, but a rude Imdx ; no lontglioe
of mourners ; no marble slab to point out theplace
to tiie passer-by. But, yet. how clearly aud distinctly do I remember the spot! The wolves howl
their niournftll d'rges over her head, the bird:-, hi;
panhi't* grave aud warole forth asougas gladly as
if no heavy hearts o'er stood beside that little
mound ; the low night wind whispers calmly around:
the grasáis green, and the flowers ofeveryhue cast
their delicious fragrance about. The travel-worn
emigrant steps a:-ide to see who lies ourie I the» :
he reads the initials rudely carved on a plain board,
the only tribute affection could rear there.,and passes quietly away. Oh! how little doe- he know of
tiie scaldmg ¡car- mat íeü there—atribútelo a lost
friend and mother!
My eyes may never again rest npon that spot.
but memory will make many a weary pilgrimage
thither. You who have wept for a mother, know
well how to sympathise with mc; you who are
blessed with a mother, neverwound her feelings by
a hasty, cruel word : obey her precepts, imitate her
example, reverence her above all eerLhly ihitiL's.—

Medical Use op Salt.—Tu many cases-of disor-
d¿í *ed stomach, a teaspoonful of salt is a certain
cure. In the voilent internal aching, termed chol
ic, add a teaspoonful ofsalt to a pint of cold wafer,
drink it and go to bed, it is one .of the speediest
r.-medies known. The same will revive a person
who seems almost dead from receiving a very heavy fall, &&.
Iu an apopleet!c fit, no time should be lost ii
pouring down salt and water, if sufficient sensibility remain to allow of swallowing ; if not, the head
must be sponged with water until the sense return
when-a't will completely restore the patient from
the lethargy.
In many cases of severe blending at the lungs,
and when other remedies fail, Pr. Rush, found two
teaspoonfuls ofsalt completely stayed the blood.
In case of bite from a mad" dog* wash the part
with strong brine for au hour, then bind ou some
salt with a rag.
In toothache, warm salt and water held to the
part, and renewed two or three times will relieve iu
most cases. If the gums be affected, wash the
mouth with brine : if they le covered with tartar,
wash them twice a day with salt and water.
In swelled neck, wash the part with brine, and
drink it also twice a day until cured.
Salt will expel worms, if used in food in a moderate degree, and aids digestion; but salt meat is
injurious if used much.— Scientific Aimrican.
Woman.—As the dove will clap its wings to its
side, and cover and conceal the arrow that is preying on its vitals, so it is the nature of won.iau to
hide from ihe world the pangs of wounded affection.
With her the desire ofthe heart has failed. The
great charm of existence is at an end. She neglects all the cheerful exercises that gladden the
spirits, quicken the poise, ar.d send the tide of life
in healthful currents through the veins. Her rest
is broken ; the sweet refreshment of sleep is poisoned by melancholy dreams, " dry sorrow drinks
her blood.,'" until her feeble trame sinks under the
last external assailant Look for her after a little
while, and you find friendship weeping over her untimely grave, and wondering that one who but
lately glowed with all health and beauty, should
now lie brought down to "darkness and the worm."'
You will be told of some wintry chill, some slight
indisposition that laid her low. but no one knows
the mental malady that previously sapped her
strength, and made her so easy a prey to the spoiler.— Washington Irving.
Tai-: Pope veksts tue Tiu.^ceafii.—The Holy
See and the King of Naples have just entered into
a convention of thirty-one articles, to regulate
telegraphic correspondence between tlieir respective domln'ons, which is published in (Im oOielal
journals. Like all other governmental measures fe
these countries, it .exhibits the most zealous dis-
tr-st of the people. After prescribing neeessary
iv,]estbr the establishment and economy of tlie
lines, its agents, *tc, it is provided that either
gov'rnui'a'iit may at any moment suspend, for an
indoterm nate time, the working ofa Hue, and
moreover, that the superintendents must be acquainted with the names and characters of individuals «ho oi :r communications, and that no despatches which, in their judgment, may lie contrary
to the security of the State, to its religion, togood
morals or public ord'.r. can be accepted. Communications cannot exceed 100 words, and must be

A Little IIvshaxd UtiULTTfLB Wife.—The Sati-
_sl_t Rcgislei is responsible for this. Two little
children—a boy and girl, aged four aud three years
r.'speciively. were missed by their families. u:.d
considerable alarm existed. Persons were om in
all directions aud the bell-ringer had been sent for,
when, passing a thicket of bushes in the garden,
tlte mother thought she heard low voices near.—
Pulling away ihe leaves tliere mme the truants,

denouncement was fo comical that it was eo iclnd'd

Pi.axt Tkfes.—Plant tliem by the roadside
piiwit them in yards, streets, lanes, lots—every
where you can find room for a tree to give shad'
or bear fruit. Now—this very day—is the right
time to plant trees. There is no better time than
now to plant hardy fruit trees, and every hundred dollars that may be spent in plant ng such
trees along the highway, of a farm that has 3 pa -
lie travelled road running through it wil aid a
thousand dollars to the seliiug price of that far
twenty years hence. Take up large trees, w th
plenty of roots, and plant them as though you intended them to grow, and they will grow.
Pexm-AUTv.—A counnittee of eight j*sjeuileinen
had appointed to meet ;at 12 o'clock. Seven of
th. in were punctual: but the eighth came bustlia;
in with a polo ik's for being a quarter of an hour
behind the time: "The time" sad he. '___* d

of it being so i ate," &c. A Quaker present said,
"l-'riend, I am not clear that we should admit thy
apology. It were a matter of regret thou shouldst
have wasted thy own quarter of an hour ; but here
.are seven besides thyself whose time thou hast
also consumed, amounting in tlie whole to two
hours, aud olio-eighth of it WB&thine oa. nproperty."
;jy,.. If you want to fall in love with a girl,
don't 'commence flirting with her. Tliis courting

friendly intentions of exchanging a few amicable
