traducida de la que se haya escrita en italiano,
onstodiada en el mencionado real y general archivo de Simancas comprendida en el negociado
y legajo ya eepresados en ias primeras líneas ;
la cual es da presumir que víno remitida de
Italia a la majestad de Felipe II, por cuanto la
mencionadacipia italiana se encuentra entre
los papales mas importantes de Roma correspondientes a aquel glorioso reinado. Y porque
no haya lugar ni ocasión de permitirse la mas
ligera duda- sóbrela autenticidad actual del
espresado documento, _\ crédito que pueda inspirar mi nombre. ía remito así oomo también
a las partes citadas del mencionado archivo
general del reino donde la hallarán y puede

Wh have been frequently desired to furnish

a permanent hedge.
i his is a subject of very great importance
in tbis country ; tbe cost of fencing is one of
the heaviest bills the cultivator has to bear,
and it is, or should be, bis first care that what
be does, should be done we!!.
We know that many suppose tbat it would
require a great length of time to secure a
Hedge from the Seed : yet it is not so. if tbe
proper care is given in planting, cultivating,
transplanting, and heading in and forming the
hedge, three years from tbe seed will give a
very good barrier against intrusion ; the
fourth year a strong protection, and the fifth
yearan impregnable fence, a protection against
man and beast, and even the smaller animals.
We recommend the fallowing rules to be
adopted, to secure the most desirable fc.ee

We recommend the seed to be soaked over

one—in moist weather it is not needed. The
ground should be plowed very deep ; subsoiling
will add to tbe growth of tbe seedling. Plant
in broad drills, quite thin, after the ground
has been tretl and tboiou»bly polarized ;
cover tbe seed two to throe inc! ei in wet weather, three to four in dry Weather. Wben the
seedlings have grown "half tbe season, he; d

grow strong and be better furnished with roots

the rows one foot apart and tbe plants one fool
apart in tbe rows—setting them triangular, so
as to break joints, thus filling the rows and
making an uniformity in both sides of the
hedge. The plants should be set a little deep
er than they originally grew.
We recommend another feature in preparing a hedge for extensive grounds, .^elect a
stronger piant than (lie average, and plant one
every twenty-five feet. These are to be permitted "to rise with undipped wings"' and
form a tree, ¡t requires but ¡ittle imagination
to conei ve of tlie beauty of a long and con tin
nous hedge of living green for miles, ornamented with golden yellow fruit ; and then tower
ing up along this i i no, magnificent trees,
twenty, thirty, forty, and fifty feet high, bearing the same golden fruit. All this can easily
be accomplished by commencing right and
doing it well
^fter the transplanting is finished, and after
tlie plants are first set and the ground levelled
around them by treading lightly and raking
clean and smooth, tlie plants should he cut
down to within two inches ofthe ground; this
will cause them to branch freely and glow
thick. When they have reached two feet
high, cut them back one half, this causes tliem
to grow slowly and branch again, and if the
season is favourable tbey can be shortened a
second time, and tlie wo,-k is done of pruning
