at. PoHM Personnl SkcHUcs of Gni-lbuldl. A correspondent of La Presse, writing from iSaples, under date of ¡Sept. 10, says: "I have heard Garibaldi speak, I have seen hita near; he is admirable. His nature is tbat of the lion. Ilis voice is resolute, bis bands larg;, and his body- short and thick. When ajjgry be must be terrible. But habitually he has a placid eye and a 8\veetsmile. ileisnot so much a man of genius as an apostle. He walks onward in faith without fear or hesitation, and works miracles. lie is a man to quit his boat in the storm and walk upon ihe waters. He believes in his mission as others believe in their star. The other day, daling a disturbance in the Carmine, when some soldiers' ¿fired a few musket shots, and even some cannon shots, upon the people, he never stirred. He otfered cigars to tin: national Guard about bim, Haying, "Smoke while you wait for them," Eat he has a keen scent of danger, and when he sees it anywhere he is wont to say, " I will go myself," nnd then nothing can stop him. One of the most striking traits of his churaeter is his singular simplicity. He is the only great man i know who never acfcsapttrt. Hisspeeeh- es, like those of all men of strong convictions, are somewhat grandiloquent; but in privato his manner is the most familiar and cordial that can be conceived. He listens to all comers with the patience of a martyr, not keeping them at a distance or speaking to them like an oracle. He is simple and good. To mention one trait out of a thousand: At Messina one of his old companions in arms knelt down before him on both knees, saying lie had an immense favor to ask, The man was long before he could be brought to explain himself, but at length he stammered out that be wanted one of Garibaldi's buttons, to wear as an.amulet round bis neck, and then he was sure he would not die. Tb Dictator at once lore otf a button and gave it to the suppliant." An English lady writes as ¿follows from Naples: " I have seen to-day tbe.face of G-ari- baldi, and now all tho devotion of his friends is made as clear as day to me.— You bave o,,ly to look into his face, and you teel that t^iere is, perhaps, the one man in the world in whose service you would take your heart in your band and follow bim to death. I never altogether understood that fe.ling until bis presence made it clear to me. It is the individual man and his personal influence that are so strong; but then it is tbe man exalted and sanctified, as it were, by his own single-minded devotion to and faith in a holy cause; and it is" that which you see in his face, as though writ; en in letters of light, and which carries on your thoughts from him as the man to him as tbe type and representative of his cause. One could love the cause without seeing him, but in seeing him one seems to be suddenly gifted with the power of seeing it as he sees ■it, and you love it better for his s'ak' and you wholly honor and admire him for its sake. I have often asked, our marine officers who have seen him to describe him to me. They get on swimmingly about his shoulders and chest, anei head, and beard; and then they desire with all their might to describe his expression—but here they stop and gasp. Neither can I describe it to you. 1 can only say that it explains that devotion to the death, aud, what is more, that faith in doing what the prudent world at large considers an impossibility, for his sake; it makes that feeling appear to you the simplest and most natural thing in the world, ilis wonderful simplicity and forgetfulness of self win the love of all; it is not the grand iron willed hero who determines of bis own strength to carry his under- j taking through. X do not wonder at the conviction which prevails of his having been, raised up by Providence ; he seems to feel that this is the work given him to do, and that he could not leave it undone, but that it is no more credit to bim than it is to a joiner to make a stool, whose mission it is to make stoolsjj It is a face in which the whole character is written—simple, grand and lov- ^¿mp^ nnn To 1>e Distributed thOJO.'Jww io cfis. A correspondent of La Presse, writing from iSaples, under date of ¡Sept. 10,
says: "I have heard Garibaldi speak,
I have seen hita near; he is admirable.
His nature is tbat of the lion. Ilis voice
is resolute, bis bands larg;, and his body-
short and thick. When ajjgry be must
be terrible. But habitually he has a
placid eye and a 8\veetsmile. ileisnot
so much a man of genius as an apostle.
He walks onward in faith without fear
or hesitation, and works miracles. lie
is a man to quit his boat in the storm
and walk upon ihe waters. He believes
in his mission as others believe in their
star. The other day, daling a disturbance in the Carmine, when some soldiers'
¿fired a few musket shots, and even some
cannon shots, upon the people, he never
stirred. He otfered cigars to tin: national Guard about bim, Haying, "Smoke
while you wait for them," Eat he has
a keen scent of danger, and when he
sees it anywhere he is wont to say, " I
will go myself," nnd then nothing can
stop him. One of the most striking
traits of his churaeter is his singular
simplicity. He is the only great man i
know who never acfcsapttrt. Hisspeeeh-
es, like those of all men of strong convictions, are somewhat grandiloquent;
but in privato his manner is the most
familiar and cordial that can be conceived. He listens to all comers with
the patience of a martyr, not keeping
them at a distance or speaking to them
like an oracle. He is simple and good.
To mention one trait out of a thousand:
At Messina one of his old companions
in arms knelt down before him on both
knees, saying lie had an immense favor
to ask, The man was long before he
could be brought to explain himself, but
at length he stammered out that be
wanted one of Garibaldi's buttons, to
wear as an.amulet round bis neck, and
then he was sure he would not die. Tb
Dictator at once lore otf a button and
gave it to the suppliant."
An English lady writes as ¿follows
from Naples:
" I have seen to-day tbe.face of G-ari-
baldi, and now all tho devotion of his
friends is made as clear as day to me.—
You bave o,,ly to look into his face, and
you teel that t^iere is, perhaps, the one
man in the world in whose service you
would take your heart in your band and
follow bim to death. I never altogether
understood that fe.ling until bis presence made it clear to me. It is the individual man and his personal influence
that are so strong; but then it is tbe
man exalted and sanctified, as it were,
by his own single-minded devotion to
and faith in a holy cause; and it is" that
which you see in his face, as though
writ; en in letters of light, and which
carries on your thoughts from him as
the man to him as tbe type and representative of his cause. One could love
the cause without seeing him, but in seeing him one seems to be suddenly gifted
with the power of seeing it as he sees
■it, and you love it better for his s'ak'
and you wholly honor and admire him
for its sake. I have often asked, our
marine officers who have seen him to
describe him to me. They get on swimmingly about his shoulders and chest,
anei head, and beard; and then they desire with all their might to describe his
expression—but here they stop and
gasp. Neither can I describe it to you.
1 can only say that it explains that devotion to the death, aud, what is more,
that faith in doing what the prudent
world at large considers an impossibility, for his sake; it makes that feeling
appear to you the simplest and most
natural thing in the world, ilis wonderful simplicity and forgetfulness of
self win the love of all; it is not the
grand iron willed hero who determines
of bis own strength to carry his under- j
taking through. X do not wonder at the
conviction which prevails of his having
been, raised up by Providence ; he seems
to feel that this is the work given him
to do, and that he could not leave it undone, but that it is no more credit to
bim than it is to a joiner to make a
stool, whose mission it is to make stoolsjj
It is a face in which the whole character is written—simple, grand and lov-

"My friends, we should not slight the
gifts of the Lord hy neglecting to take
care of them; and, as I have a little

A few nights ago, Mrs. John

examining the bed clothing, to remove
a locust which she was confident was
concealed in them. He searched them
once, but discovered nothing, and went
to sleep again. But Mrs. Fulk was not
to be satisfied. Soon she insisted on a
second examination, and this time Mr.
Fulk discovered a rattlesnake,threefeel
three inches in length, snugly ensconced
in the mattress. The reptile was quickly dispatched.
