We, the undersigned members of the
Committee appointed at ameeting ofthe
citizens, held in the town of Santa Barbara, on the 19th of September A. D.
1864, to take all necessary steps to relieve the impending distress of the pogr
inhabitants of said town, would respectfully represent the following explanation ofthe causes of the existence of
said misery.
Firstly,—It is well known that for
years the population of this place and
county have almost exclusively followed
the raising of stock for a livelihood, and
that owing to the terrible and unexampled drought of this year, the cattle and
sheep have perished by thousands, so
that hundreds of the native population
who had stock are now without the
means of procuring the necessaries of
life, much less of being able to give •employment to the vaqueros or poor laborers.
Secondly,—The small proportion who
heretofore followed agriculture as a
means of livelihood, from the same
cause, instead of reaping a harvest of
grain "have gleaned but misery, as the
parched ground did not even yield back
the seed entrusted to its bosom.
And when it is considered, that here
we have no manufactures, or mines, the
public well see that the suffering ofthe
poor is, and must be great indeed. For
these reasons we appeal to the generous
public to come to our aid. We ask only
for the mere necessaries of life, such as
Corn, Eice, Beans and some Salt-Pork—
of course sugar, tea and coffee, and
clothing will be thankfully received by
the Committee to aid the sick and aged ~
Bemember, that "he who giveth to the
poor lendetn to the Lord."
