One beautiful spring morning;, in tho pleasmit

view the beauties o! Nature which surrounded me.

wild flowers that overspread tbe ground with
beauty and loveliness. The little birds hopped
from branch to branch, sweetly singing theirsong

little ant pursued her daily labor, seemingly unconscious of my presence. Thenoiseof theblnck-

Bides were shaded by beautiful live-oak and pine
trees, while beneath their wide-spreading boughs
were sweet wild flowers of various hues, filling tho
air with the most delicious odor.
Being somewhat tired of a ramble longer ihan
usual, I sealed myself on a large rock overgrown
with moss and grass, on the backs of a little

its course through a deep, rocky canon, leaping

uovl7 Attest: Joux W. Suore, Clerk.
ligbtful it would be to ascend the mountain at
whose base 1 was sitting, and gaze afar olf on tbe
beautiful scenery. I arose aud examined thesteep
ascent; but I had not proceeded far before I found
it very difficult, and I was about to despair. The
thought struck me very forcibly, that I was
climbing the steep and rugged " Hill of Science;"
that the fountain head of wisdom was on its summit, aud all those who would drink of its inexhaustible Waters must persevere and press onward.
Theu Ambition, steeping forward and offering me
her hand, assisted me In reaching a high point,
which I took to be the summit while sitting at the
base. I cast my eyes around me, and in my imagination I saw Hope, ever blessed Hope, pointing
upward, bearing in her hand au ensign, with the
molto, "Excelsior." Again, with renewed vigor,
I commenced the steep ascent, which I found very
difficult; but Hope and Ambition, advocates of
Happiness, took me by the hand, and assisted mc
in reaching tho summit, after two long aud tiresome hours.
How beautiful, how sublime, how picturesque
the surrounding scenery ! and how refreshing, too,
after my fatiguing walk, to sit down upon the
trunk of some old pine and inhale the pure mountain air, filled with the sweet perfume ofthe many
thousand wild Sowers around me.
As I gazed upon the blue-arched canopy of
heaven and the beauties of Nature, I was filled
with inspiration, and I exclaimed, "O Lord, how
fold are Thy works! In wisdom hast Thou
made them all. Tbe earth Is full of Thy riches."
To the North I view the "Sierra Nevadas,"
magnificently robed in snowy grandeur, and tlieir
ofly peaks towering high above the clouds, communing with (he heavens. The winds from the
summit were fanned into a gentle breeze, whose
cool, refreshing breath stole through every quiet
nook of the emerald plains below, making earth,
seemingly, a Paradise.
To the South, behold the Sacramento River,
smoothly gliding through the quiet vailey of green
plumage, bearing on its bosom steamboats, loaded
with freight and passengers, bound for tho great
metropolis of the State. See the smoke and
steam gracefully ascending as tbey pass along !—
How beautiful!
See Sacramento. Petaluma and their sister valleys, blooming in beautiful orchards and gardens!
aod whose fields ornament the plains and deluge
earth with one vast ocean of waving grain;.while
high above stands Mount Shasta, as a scutry over
all.
While I was sitting here contemplating the
beauties of Nature that surrounded me, I became
so completely abstracted from the lower world
that I forgot where I was, and almost became unconscious of my being.
As I Bat here, motionless, gazing intently on tho
de landscape, Fancy came with her telescope,
and bade me look further. I see, alar off. Santa
Clara, with her beautiful green valleys, teeming
with waving grain, smiling in the bright sunshine,
as a star in the heavens. Further, I see Los An-
resttothe weary traveler; while San Bernardino's vernal beauty gleams liko au emerald in a
monarch'scrown,
"Remove your eyes, and look Eastward," Baid
Fancy, "and tell me what thon see'st." "I seo tho
plains of San Joaquin," said I, "and tho beautiful
groves of Calaveras, rising in grandeur, seemingly kissing tho clouds, against the distant sky ;
while downward foams tlie silvery stream of the
Yo Somite. There, too, stand tho majestic inon-
arebs of the forest, whose noble forms have withstood the storms of ages. See those trees—the
largest of their race—their hugd forms rising
high above tho neighboring trees, and man, at
their base, seems but a mere atom.
Among those bills I see smoke arising from lhe
lonely miner's cabin, where he may bo soon washing the hills in search of the glittering ore. There
the ground is upturned, rocks thrown up, rivers
ade to run an artificial course, washing the gold
as they speed back to their original channel.
To the West, see San Francisco! Majestic heir
of all tbat Is Opulent, brave and beautiful! Pride
of the Pacific! Venice of the West—land of my
home! Where once the degraded Indian dwelt in
miserable buts, Imildlngs of granite and marble
walls ; sons and daughters of beauty and genius
dwoll within her courts, making -her tbe beau-
rnonde of California.
By the kindness of Mr. Henry Grinnell, says

Gknti.kmks : I have tbe pleasure to report, for
the information ol the patrons and frieuds of lhe
expedition, my arrival at this port.
Wo made a quick passage from Boston. The
schooner proved herself to he a good sea boat, and
behaved admirably during some very heavy
weather. No serious accident occurred.
Ofl the twenty-first day out wo were off God-
haven, and on the Mh inst, wc anchored in the
harbor of lioven. That settlement or outpost in
the Upernavik district is forty miles southward
from Upernavik. We wero there detained in re-
stowing our cargo, so that we might put below
tlie deck a load of lumber intended for our winter
housing, and otherwise better prepare thc vessel
for the ice encounters. We put to sea aguin at
tho earliest practicable moment, and entered this
port on the evening of thc 12th inst. Wo found
here a Danish brig, belonging to the royal company. She will be ready I'm* sea to-morrow, and I
shall send my mail by tl.e bunds of Dr. Rudolph,
the retiring Governor of Upernavik, who returns
In her to Copenhagen, and who has politely offered to do mc this favor.
Through the kinduess and liberality of Mr.
Hanson, the Governor of Upernavik, and of Dr.
Rudolph, I have obtained al Proven and Upernavik all the dogs that I require, and BUOh furs ns
arc essential to my party. Mr. Hanson and Dr.
Rudolph have generously placed at my disposal
everything which their personal property or Uie
public stores will oflbrd for the promotion of the
interest of the expedition.
I have also been fbrluimle in om-runng tho nor-
vicesof an excellent interpreter, Mr. Peter Johnson. Helms had much experience in the management of dogs, and is a good hunter. He resides
at Tessinsak, sixty miles northward from Uperna-
vick, at which place I shall halt to tabs on board
his team of dogs, which wili make, with those on
hand, twenty five.
It is my melancholy duty to report tho death,
by apoplexy, of my carpenter. Gebson Carutbers.
He was: found dead in his bunk last Sunday morning. His body was placed in the burial ground
adjoining the church at Upernavik ; and I havo
directed a railing to bc constructed around the
grave and a suitable inscription to be placed over
it. The loss of Mr. Carutbers is deeply to be regretted. Ho formerly sailed under Capt. De Iir
ven. in the first Grinnell expedition, and in mbli
tf011 to his experience among the ice and his ski]
as a workman, he was thoroughly devoted to the
best interests of this expedition, and 1 had great
hopes of his future usefulness.
It is impossible for me to predict anything with
respect to the prospect before us.
The season has been backward, but tho weather
lias been very mild during tho past t^n days, and
the recent southerly gales have doubtless broken
the ice. The wind now blows fresh from the
northeast, and if there is mucb ice beforo us it
will be driven to the southwest.
We shall leave here to morrow, and attempt at
onco the Melville Bay passage, and shall hope to
mnke Smith's Strait not later thau the 1st of September. If successful in this endeavor, we i-hall
have abundant time to secure a convenient harbor
on the coast of Grinnoll's Land. You are already
aware that I anticipate {from observations made
by myselt upon this coast in 185 I) reaching Cape
Frazer, lat. 7D° 42', where I propose spending the
winter. A degree lower, however, will place one
within practicable reach of my proposed Hold of
exploration, if the condition of the ice wili permit, I will immediately—alter a winter harbor baa
been selected—carry forward the boat wliich f
tend using for next summer's labors, and some
provisions, as far north as possible, and then leuvo
them, secured against the bears, arid return to tho
schooner alter tlie winter has firmly set the ice.—
Early next spring we shall push forward advance
depots, and should we find either ico or water, we
shall endeavor to accomplish with boats or
sledges, or with both, thc chief object ol the voy-
aa'e before lbecbr.se of the summer. Jf this Ibr-
i.um- Kvroiw uf, wo Bffnil men mora avtm mia-
ont 11 nnecessary delay. I do not, however, anticipate this result, hut I expect that we shall be de-
Uiined two winters.
I shall endeavor by every means to avoid a
third year's absence. We carry with us, however,
food and fuel for that period, nnd in the event of
our bsfoff so lung detained, I do not fear adverse
in Its. Wilh the fresh supplies wc have ou board.
I believe we can resist tho scurvy.
I do not hesitate to express my belief lha', nl
ough we are Into, we nre in seaton. Capt. Iugle-
field left this port on the 16th of August. 1852,
aud the Important results which bo achieved during tbe following months in Smith, Jones nnd
Lancaster Sounds are well known.
I am Informed by Governor Hanson tbat the
nb&Mng fleet did not encoded la passing Mell ville

my expeef ations. Of this food we liave thrcfe'
thousand pounds—equal to about thirty thousand
pounds of the raw material. I havo tried it during the passage, and consider tLo several articles
united preferable to the ordinary pemican. Pem-
ican of lhe (iuest quality maynt any time be made
of our beef by the addition of bird, of which wa
have an abundant supply. With good and Biif-
licient food, with every essentia! for lhe promotion of health and comloit, with united and earnest companions, and with a vessel well suited for
tbe & nice, 1 have, upon leaving this outpost ol
christian settlement, every reason to feel greatly
encouraged and to expect success.
Trusting our lives and fortunes to the keeping

STATEMKXT Or DE. I.OSOSUAW.
Dr. Longshaw, who left tho expedition of Dr.
Hayes on the coast of Greenland, has finally concluded to make public the particulars of the voj
age of the United States to that point. Wi find'
few items ot interest In bis report furnished to th
Boston Journal, in addition to what wo havo already published :
The vessel Hailed from Nantucket Roads on the
lOtli of July. After being out a fewdays tho vessel rolled badly, and most of the party were seasick. On the IMh thoy paw the great eclipse of
the sun, but the fog interfered materially with
their investigations. After that Ihey had several
days of log, in the midst of whieh they ran into
Mutton Bay, and came near beiug wrecked. Orf
the 23d they experienced a severe gale. The een
swept over the deck, stove the cabin skylight anil
filled tlie cabiu with water to the depth of fiflcert
inches.
On the 2-lth Ihey saw the first iceberg. On tho
27th, during a gale, a seaman named McDonald
was washed overboard, but catching hold ofa ropn
be was saved. On the 1st of August they saw
Disco Island, and at that time there were over (VO
hundred Icebergs in sight. Aug. lib, they reached
point where the sun did not set at nigh.t Aug.
1th, they arrived at Proven.
On the way from Proven to Upernavik, Mr. Ca-
rutlicrs, the carpenter of the expedition, died of
apoplexy. Ho was thirty-one years old, a native'
of South Carolina, and a accompanied the firstex-
pedition. He was buried at Upernavik, upon tho
arrival of the ship there, A Dane, named Janson,
was hired in his place. Six E-quiinaux wore hired
to accompany the expedition.
A dinner wi\^ given by lhe oflicers of the expe*
dition to the otlicers of tlio Danish -ship T/atfe ;
and tlie Governor, doctor and missionary, with
'l"1'" ladies, expressed much gratitieatiim with
VOJ-
'ids
the
12th,
I shall, however, avoid every unnecessary risk
of being eanght by the winter in tbe middle ol ihe
ice. Should the prospects ot success appear lo be
peculiarly discouraging, I shall return southward
and winter at one ot the Danish peltlementa.
My parly are in excellent spirits and earnest in
the performance ol Iheir *liil:e.-*; an! yo:i may
rest, assured that no effort will lie spared to necuiri
pi ish the object ol our undertaking in 1 Inr shortest
possible time. 'J'o favor this, we have every facility which experience has indicated.
Our camp ei'|*iipm<*rH,- an1 of the mo.-t ciunpnet
and portable description, The lood prepared expressly fot the expedition, by the American Dei A-
eating Company in New York, consisting of soup,
bad and potatoes, is excellent and fully equal to
their reception ; and thereafter tho American oflicers were feted and feasted daily.
Tiie expedition sailed lrom Cpernavik, Ang. H,
for TesSUIBBaak. They encountered some ice, and
arrived there on the 23d. At this place there wns
tt small sett lenient of Esquimaux, oue hundred and
twelve of whom were enmlovd to inula' un Ota
furs mtrehn**■><' ut l.lporiMivit- inl-i clothing mif"
Solent for four years. Six dog houses were constructed on ihe deck of tho vessel, and tho work
of housing the deck had beeu commenced btforo
Dr. Eongshaw left the expedition, which was on
the 2d of September. Dr. Hayes proposed to saif
In a abort time for Smith's Sound, on the west
side, which be thinks tho freest lrom ice. Having
attained perhaps yo degrees, he would, during Iho
month of Ociober, carry two boats and a quantity
of provisions to some point about two hundred
miles north-northwest, which he hopes to accomplish before the long winter's uight seis in. Jn
April, or as soon as it is light enough, he will
start for lhe depot, and thence over ilic ice towards the Pole, carrying the boats to and launch-
1 ig them upon the open una, should he find it ; if
not. he would go over tho ice ns rapidly and m
far as possible.
All the ship's company, officers and men, wero
in excellent health nnd spirits, ami enthusiastic
about the result of the expedition.
We find in a Detroit [taper a letter from Dr. L.,
written before he had concluded to leave lho vessel, on account ofa fear of injury to his eyes
from the ice, from whicli we copy the lollowintf
extract:
"Our most valuable man is Mr. Sontag, for besides science, he has tact, and directs lhe preparation cf suitable food, mo ihat we live like prince*,
thanks to the liberality of tho citizens of Boston.-
Our vessel is larger and stouter thau tbo Advance
was; our cabin is twenty by fif'iy feet, and lias
eight berths ; we have 1.00-8 pounds of preserved
meats, to be used only on Sledge journeys over tho
ice ; we have five boats, spare ones, and canvas Irr
ahuihlrince ; -15 tons of coal—in fact, we are admirably supplied with everything needed.
"Our table compares favorably with that of tho
Astor House in quality and variety ; every kind
Of fish, Mesh or Iruit that Fulton market wouhl

"We expect (o be gone three years at least, for

"The expedition has sow attained tba latitude

New ToitK, Ncv. 80—We understood that Mr.
J. Jl. Wade, director of tho Western Union'
Telegraph Company, will go out iu tomorrow's
California steamer, for the purpose of making
arrangements for building the California end of
the Pacific Telegraph line; Material for tho lino in
purchased, and ifi now being shipped from Boston
via Cape Horn.
From present appearances there is every reason
for believing lhat when the spring open", thw
work on boih ends of the route, na well as tho
center, will be vigorously commenced. Two Hgenlir

routes, for the purpose of more IhrniiL'hly

San franciseo, when the route which the wires
are to take ia to be finally determined upon.
