Mr, Bwnnan intends to procure some eighteen or

able that in proper looaUtieg, all the varieties of
grape which Europe produces will grow in Cali-
J,,rniu ; and it is by no means improbable lha.t instead of deferioniting, they will improveby being
transplanted into her virgin soil, nnd fed by her
pure atmosphere. At any rate, the experiment is
worth trying, and although it will subject Mr.
Brandon to considerable outlay, lie is determined
to make it. Such a disposition to aid in developing the rich resourcrs of the Stale is certainly
highly creditable, and Mr. Braunan will deserve
the Ihaoka ol ail who have at heart the wellareof
the Pacific State.
Thk Sk.k Wokm ix Caluyuii-y--About ten or
iwelve days ago we mentioned lhe fact that Mr.
Provosl, of Sau Jose„wusendeuvoriiig to raise the
■si I tt worm with a view to test wdielher silk could
beg made a product ofCalifornia, and yesterday
Mr. Provost sent a box of cocoons, abont seventy
in number, to Mr. Hrnry Hentscli of this city, to
whom is due the credit of having introduced the
silk worm egg in this Slate. The silk composing
these eocoous, is extremely fine, glossy and strong.
proving beyond the possibility of doubt that our
climate is favorable to thc silk worm ; and also,
that the product of the worm is as good iu California as elsewhere. Indeed, we are disposed lo
believe, that after a suitable trial has been made,
and the business comes to be more perfectly understood, the silk of California will rival in lustre,
strength and durability that produced in the most
favorable portions of Italy. The cocoons sent to
Mr. Heufsch by Mr, Provost, are the lirst ever ob*
taiued in tliis S:ate, aud lhe success which has attended llieellbrls ol the gentlemen named will undoubtedly prompt others to like uudertuUingn.—

AxoTiiKii State Puison Outbreak.— We are
again called upon to chronicle one of lho.se Slate
Prison outbreaks, that havo become so common in
California as almost to form a feature. The exact
details of this ulfair had not been received at a
late hour last tfight, but so far as we have been
able to learn, the facts are as follows : Some thirty or forty couviclfl had laid a plan to overpower
the guards und escape, atu^selected tlie hour of
dinner for their attempt, and while at dinner they
commenced throwing whatever missiles, such as
brickbats, stones, etc., at tbe guards, who wero

uch effect that one, named Kibbe, was shot
through tho lungs, and two others*. Edwards and
