SATURDAY EVENING.
How sweet the evening shadows fall,
Advancing from the West,
As ends the weary week of toil,
And comes the day of rest!
Bright o'er the earth tbe star of eYe
Her radiant beauty sheds,
And myriad sisters calmly weave
Their lights around our heads,
Rest, man, from labor ! rest from ein!
The world's hard contest close!
Tho holy hours with God begin—
Yield thee to sweet repose.
Bright o'er thc earth the morniiij
Its sacred light wiil cast ;
Fair emblem of tbe glorious day
That evermore shall hist.

Better trust nil, and he deceived,
And weep that trust, and that deceiving ;
Than doubt one heart, that, if believed,
Had blessed one's life with true believing.
Oh, in this mocking world, too fast
The doubting fiend o'ertakes our youth !
Better he cheated to the last,
Than lose the blessed hope of truth,

While a fashionable conversation was being
held in the Music Hall of Newcastle, England, recently, a malicious wag called one of tbe ladies
aside, and told her as a profound secret, that a celebrated electrician had placed a powerful magnet
in each of the six beautiful chandeliers, which
would cause the spring steel skirt of any lady
passing near them to be inverted by tho power of
attraction. As one might conclude, this profound
secret was soon known to every lady in the room,
and produced a great sensation among the wearers
of steel ribbed garments. During the whole evening, not one could be induced to venture near the
brilliant mediums of light; aud several timid
ones departed for their homes inslanter. When
tbo hoax proved to be such, the storm of indignation was worthy of womanly lungs ; and had tho
wag been within reach, he would iiavc paid dearly
for his amusement.

Morn again with golden pencil
Tints the curtain of the East,
And agaiu in robes of tinsel
Standetb at her holy chancel
Making ready ibr the feast!
Gently Hushing,
Gently blushing,
Like a bride before the priest!
Oh, what holy thoughts come o'er ua
Ay we drink the morning's biilm!
As we view the field before us,
As we join the pleasant chorus
Of the morning's holy psalm!
As we wander,
As we ponder,
In the morning's blessed calm.
Thoughts of other, happier hours,
Come to us with memories rife,
And again we seek the bowers
Where we used to gather flowers,
Iu tbe morning march of life ;
Memories greet ue,
Pleasures meet us,
Yet unstained by eare or strife.
Oh, how much of life is wasted
In this so-called world of bliss ;
How much pleasure-grain is Wanted-
How much happiness untasted —
How mueh pleasure do we miss,
Just by keeping
Dull eyes sleeping,
Such a hoiy morn as this !

High Prices for Garden Produce.—Owing to
the unfavorable weather in Eng'aud, the price for
garden products in London at last accounts was

cherries fifty cents; lust year's apples $1 per dozen;
asparagus seventy-five cents per hundred; peas $1

The new novel of Rutledgo haa run to six edi

Mobile, has gone through twenty-three editions in

in relation to both these works, that they were rejected when first offered to publishing houses in
New York ; the Harpers having declined the former, and the Appletous tbe latter.

At Liverpool two expert London thieves picked
the pockets of a cotton broker of £11.000 (er $55,-

chanced to be in town, recognized one of them at
the post office, where he was found to have registered a letter to a lady in Loudon. Following the
man up, they arrested both ; following the letter,
they recovered the entire amount of money ; aud
in almost as little time as it takes to say it, the
pickpockets were exported ior teu and seven years
