the odd trick. One of the best players iu the vii- ,l" '' " ' " '"*'
lage was Major Smith, the tavern keeper ; or, as he
expressed it. the proprietor of the hotel ; a widower, who, like
" Jcptha, Jucl**ro in.Israel,
Had a ili.uLgbtei* j>:i$.siLig fair.*'
Fanny, the daughter, waB one of the prettiest
girls iu Tennessee, nnd thei el ore oue of the pretti-l
est in the world ; for here we digress to lay down
as ipse diait, that Tennessee women, in point of
beauty, are matchless, 'lhe sweetheart of Fannyj
was a young farmer, residing in the neighborhood,!
whom we shall designate by the name of Bob.
It happened one day belore harvest, the young:
man was detained in the vlllnge, and found himself as usual at the hotel, seated between the Major and his daughter. After a desultory conversation between the two gentlemen, on the elate of
the weather, the prospect of tlie approaching harvest, and such important staples of conversation,
the Major asked Robert bow bia wheat crop promised to yield. In reply he was told that the young
farmer expected to make at least one hundred
bushels. The Major appeared to study for a moment, then abruptly proposed a ga ne of 'old
Bledge,' or 'seven up :' the stakes to be his daughter Fanny against the crop of wheat. Tliis, of
course, thc young man indignantly refi
cause he could uot bear the idea that thc
her he loved should he made the subject of a bet,
or, that he should win a wife by gambling for her;
aud, perhaos, because he knew the old mau wns
"hard to beat," and there was a strong probability of his losing both wheat and wife.
It was not until the Major, with his usual obstinacy, had sworn that unless he won her he should
never have her, that the young man wns forced reluctantly to consent to play.
The table was placed, tbe candles lit, the cards
produced, and the playera took tbeir seats, with
Miss Fanny between them, to watch the progress
of the game. The cards were regularly shuffled
and cut, and it fell to the Major's lot to deal. The
first hand was jftyed. and Robert made gift to the
Major's high, low, game. Robert Iheu dealt ; the
Major begged ; it was given, and the Major again
made three to his opponent's one.
" Six to two," said Miss Funny with a sigh.
The Major, as he dealt the cards, winked know
ingly. and said :
" I'm good for the wheat, Master Bob."
The old man turned a trump—it was a spade.
Fanny glanced at her father's hand—her heart
Bank ; he heiil the three, eight spot, and the king ! j
She then looked at Robert's hand, and, lo 1 he had I
the ace. queen, duce, and Jack or knave. She
whispered to Robert to beg—he did so.
" Take it," said the Major.
Robert led his duce, which tho Major took with
his three sp"t, and followed by playing the king.
Robert put the queen upon it. The Major, supposing it was the young man's last trump, leaned
over the table, and tapping his last trick with his
finger, said :
" That's good as wheat."
"Is it?" asked Robert, as he displayed tothe
a6toniBhed Major the ace and jack, yet in his
hands.
"High, low, jack, gift and game!" shouted
Robert.
"Ont!" ejaculated Fanny.
" Good as wheat," added Robert, as he flung his
arms around Fanny's neck and kissed her.
In due time they were married, and ever after
that, when anything occurred of a pleasing nature to the happy couple, they would express their
approbation of it by tbe phrase : ' Good as wheat.'

A RtmnrlinWt* Case for Plijiitioii
A few flays ago, Mr. J. C. Adams, known
Rocky Mountain Bear Trapper, appeared at the
College o( Physicians aud Surgeons, 23d street, to
see if anything could be done for nis head, which
was scalped in a bear-fl^ht some six or yems ago
It appears that Mr. Adams, accompauhd bj a tame
bear, eiicounltred a huge grizzly, and closed with
liim. The monster, by one lell blow, struck Ad-
ms upon the head and tore the -scalp from the
skull completely over the os fronds; and the
trapper wculd eoon have been iu a .condition to
make no mors hunts, but for the lame bear, who,
seeing the danger to his master, rushed inlo ilu
stri!e; and saved Adams' life at the expense of blown. The staffed Skill of the heroic bear is sill
kept as a fond memento. Adams suffered a long
time from tliis fray, and was also injured in tin
same place by a second blow from the large griz
iley, who is known in his collection by the stra
whicli girts his whole body. Adams' skull being
strippul oi ayi;i\.\\nimperio:-liu.rnl the bone, irom
and sloughed off. In its place grauu.atiuns were
formed, which in appearance, looked Like lutigus
matter. But the end of Adams' ill-luck was not
yet. A few months ago he was training a monkey,
which creature sprang upon the unfortunate loan's
head, and inserted his earuiverous teeth in the
wounded part. The monkay was cut to pieces for
this cruel infliction. Under these combined mis
fort noes. Adams has lost his health, and has become a great sufferer. Any one who witnesses
that pale man going through the daily training of
his huge bears can easily see that his end cannot |
he far away. One who saw him.at lhe College ol '
Physicians and Surgeons stales that when the
heart beats, if the bead is uncovered, the pulsations
can be seen iu tbe boneless portion of his .rani-
um. We believe that no remedies can be relied

pounds of which are annually exported from Canton, the only phice which foreigners are allowed
to visit. Silk,.co.tton,,rice, gold and silver, and all
the necessaries of life, are found in China. The
arts and manufactures in many branches, are iu
high rVierfeciion, but -Stationary, as improvements
are now prohibited. The government is a despotic
monarchy. Revenue, $200,000,000 ; army, 800,-

Nothing has yet been determined in the Cabinet
relative to ihe Overland mails; and as to the Jen-
tral route and the appropriation to the Pony Express, a Washington dispatch of tlie llth July,
slates that the Cabinet again has had the matter
under consideration. One party proposes weekly
tripB to Placerville in twentyrfiye days for $125,*
000 per annum. The entire Cabinet, except Holt,
is inclined to accept this proposition. This looks
as if pothing was likely to be done.
The Attorney-General bas given bis opinion to
the President la the New Almaden Mine case. He
maintains recent proceedings as being judicial.—
No power but the court lhat granted the injunc-

company is in possession, is fraudulent aod worthless. They had received Beveral millions they
wiire not entitled to, and should not be permitted
longer to enjoy the fruits ,ct their illegal enterprise.
A Breckinridge ratification meeting was held at
Washington on ihe 9th. President lin.chanan was
afteward serenaded, He m*de a speech of 3,000
words, and expressed his gratification at tbe nomination of Breckinridge and Lane. He gave a his.
tory of the establishment of lhe two-thirds rule,
wbich was to prevent the anti-Democratic States
combining with a few Democratic States from
nominating a candidate nol agreeable to those
Stales and electing him. Neither Breckinridge or
Douglas got lhe regular two-third nomination,
hence aiiy Pemocral was at liberty to vote for
either. He spoke of tbe rights of cilizene to the
protection of property^ and said that this would
be the last political speech he would ever make.
Three cheers were given for the President.
The friends of Breckinridge in Indiana are organizing an electoral ticket in tbat State.
Efforts were making in Virgiuia to have one
Democratic .electoral ticket only. A telegram
from Richmond, ot the 12th. however, says lhat
the friends ot Douglas will call a State Couven
tion at Staunton to nominate an electoral ticket.

Anolher secret of this] cburm which he possesses
in common with our Chevalier, is his perfect immobility. Not only has he a cast iron constitution,
but also a cast iron heart, which gives him complete command of hi3 temperament. To bim all
parties and principles are alike; he is no
more moved than a millstone is affected by tha
quality of grain it grinds. He uses all as mera
implements toward attaining his one great object'
power, §t any pri.ee, at all tipie., and uudej every
circumstance. Like bin master, Talleyrand, uf?on
whom he haa modelled himself on an English
mantle, and whom he resembles in his identification with all the parties to his time in turn, he
never exhibits too much zeaJ, but uses just as little
as is required to attain his object. It is true that
the English public do not generally attribute to
him ibis impnrlabilily in which he is engaged
against every emotional influence. His speech up-
ob the old old hats, which had a touch of most genial poetry abont it; his speech at Sir Robert
Peel's wedding, which was in the happiest taste
and happiest style, and his celebrated speech of
.disbelief in original sin, are cited by many admiring worshippers as proofs of his deep sensibility.
But no one better understands tfje weaknesses of
the English people cr panders to them with more
playlul grace ; and those who know him best, and
have studied him more closely, believe that these
bits of sensibility were simply put on for the occasion. His recent entreaty to be allowed to make
his suhscr.ption "five sovereigns lor that splendid
1 ttie fellow, Sayers," isjustsuch another delicious
touch ot sensibility which will endear him in 9
hundred English houses where faith in English
pluck and endurance are absolute.

some 3.500 people, and ^Grass Yalley 2.500. The
mining uo.t'.nties 115,000. The .calculation is too
low. "From a few paragraphs which we have noticed in exchanges, made on data furnished by
Census Marshals, it appears that in most of lhe
agricultural counties, tho proportion of voters to
the inhabitants is about one to three ; and iu tha
southern counties, wliich contain a large Spanish
population, and in San Francisco, the proportion
is prohably about one voter to Ijve inhabitants.—
Thi3 will make the total population ot theState
about 300.000—but little more than half the number that is usually estimated. The population of
San Francisco is perhap*5 more overrated than that
of any other section of the State. The papers of
that city claim a population of over 100.000; but
the returns of the Census Marshals, in all probability, will show that there are not more than 60,-
000 or 70,000 iuhabitants in that city. The politicians have hwm calculating that the population
of our State would entitle us to five or six members of Conureas, after the next apportionment ia
made ; of course there were a huudred expectants
for each additional member. But they are bound
to be wofully disappointed."
Crin-ot.in'e Victorious —the London Illustrated

of dress. The few attempts lately made, with nl-
together contrary pretensions as to size, have sig_°
naily failed, and are now merely regarded as momentary ('.Qcentricities, of which no account ia
held. We will not say what share the interests
of the linen drapers and dress makers have had iu
contributing to this victory, but unfortunalely for

One of the best players iu the vii- ,l" '' " ' " '"*' lage was Major Smith, the tavern keeper ; or, as he expressed it. the proprietor of the hotel ; a widower, who, like " Jcptha, Jucl**ro in.Israel, Had a ili.uLgbtei* j>:i$.siLig fair.*' Fanny, the daughter, waB one of the prettiest girls iu Tennessee, nnd thei el ore oue of the pretti-l est in the world ; for here we digress to lay down as ipse diait, that Tennessee women, in point of beauty, are matchless, 'lhe sweetheart of Fannyj was a young farmer, residing in the neighborhood,! whom we shall designate by the name of Bob. It happened one day belore harvest, the young: man was detained in the vlllnge, and found himself as usual at the hotel, seated between the Major and his daughter. After a desultory conversation between the two gentlemen, on the elate of the weather, the prospect of tlie approaching harvest, and such important staples of conversation, the Major asked Robert bow bia wheat crop promised to yield. In reply he was told that the young farmer expected to make at least one hundred bushels. The Major appeared to study for a moment, then abruptly proposed a ga ne of 'old Bledge,' or 'seven up :' the stakes to be his daughter Fanny against the crop of wheat. Tliis, of course, thc young man indignantly refi cause he could uot bear the idea that thc her he loved should he made the subject of a bet, or, that he should win a wife by gambling for her; aud, perhaos, because he knew the old mau wns "hard to beat" and there was a strong probability of his losing both wheat and wife. It was not until the Major, with his usual obstinacy, had sworn that unless he won her he should never have her, that the young man wns forced reluctantly to consent to play. The table was placed, tbe candles lit, the cards produced, and the playera took tbeir seats, with Miss Fanny between them, to watch the progress of the game. The cards were regularly shuffled and cut, and it fell to the Major's lot to deal. The first hand was jftyed. and Robert made gift to the Major's high, low, game. Robert Iheu dealt ; the Major begged ; it was given, and the Major again made three to his opponent's one. " Six to two" said Miss Funny with a sigh. The Major, as he dealt the cards, winked know ingly. and said : " I'm good for the wheat, Master Bob." The old man turned a trump—it was a spade. Fanny glanced at her father's hand—her heart Bank ; he heiil the three, eight spot, and the king ! j She then looked at Robert's hand, and, lo 1 he had I the ace. queen, duce, and Jack or knave. She whispered to Robert to beg—he did so. " Take it" said the Major. Robert led his duce, which tho Major took with his three sp"t, and followed by playing the king. Robert put the queen upon it. The Major, supposing it was the young man's last trump, leaned over the table, and tapping his last trick with his finger, said : " That's good as wheat." "Is it?" asked Robert, as he displayed tothe a6toniBhed Major the ace and jack, yet in his hands. "High, low, jack, gift and game!" shouted Robert. "Ont!" ejaculated Fanny. " Good as wheat" added Robert, as he flung his arms around Fanny's neck and kissed her. In due time they were married, and ever after that, when anything occurred of a pleasing nature to the happy couple, they would express their approbation of it by tbe phrase : ' Good as wheat.'
