JUNK.
"First-born of Summer, artless as the rose
That lrom the bosom of the changing earth
Gatherelb beauty of immortal worth —
Comes June, aud 'long a flow'ry pathway strews
Joy-tinted thoughts, unrivaled but hy those
Tuat prompt thc lowly heart to venture forth
From Sorrow's vale, lar-up the bill ot Mirth.
To where the flowers of Poesy repose.
Ob, June ! thy charms I lover-like adore,
And, like the roses that as sweetly blow
By cottage gate, aa by the palace door.
My simple soul, unversed in wisdom's lore,
Would fam entwine a garland for thee now,
And p&udly bind it on thy queenly brow I
Owen Meredith, in his new novel, Luclle, says :
We may live wilhout poetry, music, and art;
We may live without conscience, and live without
heart ;
We may live without friends ; we may live without books ;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks.
He may live without bocks—What js knowledge
but grieving ?
Ho may live without hope—What is hope but deceiving ?
He may live without love—what is passion but
pining?
But where is the man that can live without dining?

'So, Golden Gate!
I turn to thee, with a hearf elate.
'Twas a thought a poet heart might claim,
O, Southwest land of ours!
To give thy rock-bound shores a name,
To live alike in song and lame,
With glowing skies and flowera.
To thy billowy bay ia a royal wav,
That leads to a laud of gold ;
And the sea lions guard with watch and ward,
Thy shilling stores untold,
O, Golden Gate!
Oped to a land in promise great.
Ships more precious than arg.osstes-
Of orient climes have gone,
Freighted with life and its mysteries,
To breast the storms of Soulhern seas,
And the blast of fierce Capo Horn.
By the desolate shore of the Land ot .Fire,
Till the broad Pacific's swell
Bore them away to the sparkling bay
Of the land I love'so well—

Of a Souihwe>t-ia*,d'!.hat lies

That out oi the gates of the West may stream,

These silvery chimes are tuneful rhymes,

And the sparkling saud of whose distant strand
Is bright with sunset gold—
The Golden Gate,

difficult to comply with Lhe demands of our sov
creign, forbidding us to touch the women of this
country. Not from any disposition on our part to
disobey, but from their desire to seize us by our
hands. They apparently enjoy here the greatest freedom ; but it is only ifl appearance. Every
woman, married or single, is fastened in a cage of
bamboo or flexible steel, extending from the waist
to the feet, apparently so fixed as to give them no
uneasimss, but they are very much ashamed of it,
and conceal* it under so mauy coverings that it
renders their appearance quite ludicrous. They
are unrestricted as to the upper par. of their person, which they are permitted to expose as much
as tbey wish. This they seem to avail themselves
of, and on all occasions ol high ceremony wear
very low dresses. As in all barbarous nations, they
slit their ears and suspend from them ornaments ol
gold and silver. They also paint and powder
themselves, and after greasing their hair twist it
into fantastic shapes, aud fasten it up with long
pins and combs. Some of them would be fine
looking if they did uot disfigure themselves by
the hideous and vulgar custom of wearing eyebrows and keeping tlieir teeth white. Be assured,
therefore, that we are in uo danger of being captivated by their appearance ; we feel nothing but
regret that the barbarous and absurd oust urn* of
mau should thus destrov the charms which cultivatiou and refinement would so much improve.
Nuthing strikes us so much as the want of respect theae barbarians show even to their highest
dignitaries; tbey never hesitate to spit before
them, and it tequires considerable activity to prevent being spat upou at all times. The custom of
wearing oue sword, it seems, originated from this
Cnny ine^aTivd-'oi y\jii"i*'neig"iiu0i*. ^Cnrewttfg tobacco is much prized, it seems, from the saliva it
produces, which is pieserved, when possible, iu
handsome vases of porcelain, and placed in prom-
ineut positions. None of tbe inhabitants do reverence by crawling;* on their bellies, except after
the election of a uew Tycoon, when those m
search of office come to the central cily and per-
form that ceremony. Those who are fortuiiiite
enough to meet with honor fi\m the Tycoon seldom walk uprightly during their whole term of
office. The unfortunate applicants become at
once censors or spies upon the others, aud their silence has to be bought at a high price. All public servants have their PlIce- wbicl1 nietorww

Shall reserve my reflections on political topics till
I have another opportunity to address you. Till

Mexican StnaUOOi 111,a Trade.
There have been some recent publications showing the financial condition cf Mexico to be most
miserable.
Since thc establishment of her independence,
What is called her internal debt has been carried
to about ninety-six millions of dollars. That was
the total amount before Zuloaga and Miramon
took possession of thc Governmeut. Since then,
or within the last two years, ninety five millions
have been added to it. Bonds to that amount bave
been issued, many of them—amounting to millions—at seven ctoits on the dollar.
The taxes are crashing. Those on commerce
are particularly oppressive. There is an export
duly on silver, which now amounts to twelve per
cent. Ou every eonducta Miramon charges 8 per
cent , and Juarez i per cent. Whether on account
of this burdensome duty, or lor other reasons,
there had accumulated at the capital^/.eett millions of dollars, of which it was uncertain when it
would beforwarded ; only one eonducta having
left the capital for the last two years. The money
now detained there belongs to merchants and
hankers, who, of course, suffer loss every day it
remains dead, as is the case uow. The freight on
a eonducta to Vera Cruz is now 1 per cent., which
makes tbe charge of getting one hundred silver
dollars from the capital to that place (252 miles)
thirteen dollars. Iu the former city drafts on Vera
Cruz have ruled for a year past at 15 per cent.—
At Vera Cruz the rate on New York aud New Orleans is 2 premium,
By law, specie is required to be forwarded to
the capital or to the coast in Government couduc-
tas. Ot late, however, quantities of silver have
been smuggled from the west coast iu English government vessels. Some of it has taken its way
across the Rio Grande to New Orleans; and the
tendency now ia to San Francisco to be remitted
thence to China. When shipped from Vera Cruz
all charges, including commissions, freight and
insurance, amount to 2 per cent. So that, In the
regular course, by the time a Mexican dollar gets
laid dowu iu the bank, if has paid iu various
items of traveling expeuses^/Zee-n cents.
Among the modes of taxation resorted to is the
extensive one of a forced loan. The exaction of
money by such a method always shows a country
in a desperate conditiou. Miramon had recourse
to it only a few weeks ago, in order to put himself
io funds lor operation against the Liberal General,
Uragua, who was threatening to march on the cap
ital, with a pretty fair show ol making his threat
good.
The import charges are heavy. But the Central
Government has now so litlle strength that they
are not uniform. The Governors of several of
the Northeastern States on and near the Rio
Grande have greatly reduced the duties, much to
the injury of the commerce of Vera Cruz and
sides this chiefly of vanilla,, cochineal, certain
drugs—such as jalap, dye-woods coffee and hides.
These are sold at the place of export for cash,—
Merchandise imported sells on six and eight
months' credit; the wonder by tbe way beiug how
iny body can venture to sell any thing on time in
so distracted a country as Mexico. Yet coinmis-
on merchants guaranty sales for 2i per cent., although they ask the rather liberal commission1 of
5 per ceut. The carriage for goods from Vera
Cruz to the capital (252 miles) costs about sixdol-
lars a hundred, or $2 34 per hundred for every
100 mile;. At that rate, a net ton would coat to
move it $46 80 per 100 miles, or 463c a mile.—
Some difference between this charge and the railroad charge of 3 or 4 cents a mile.
The Mexicau trade and finance are, commercially speaking, of but small importance to the United
States at present. By the policy our Government
has pursued toward Mexico, and the want of ordinary loresight in anticipating the efforts of England to monopolize that trade, it has, so far as we
are concerned, been suffered to ruu down to an
almost nominal amount.
Trial of Juoci; Terry".—The trial of this gentleman took pjpee at San Rafael. The jury was
duly empaneled. No witnesses appeared for the
prosecution. The Court asked whether further
time was required, and the reply being given in
the negative, a verdict of "not guilty" was returned.—Herald.
We learn that the Episcopal Mission Sunday
School celebration on the 4th, was quite as much
of a success peenniarly as it was otherwise. The
nett profits amounted to the very pretty sum of
.1,725, for much of wh.ch the institution is indebted to the opposition of illiberal parties.—SM.
Insane—A man wdio gives his name as Uhler,
was arrested yesterday and locked up in the sta
tion house ou the charge of insanity.—Ibid.
The pigeon tournament at the Willows, was concluded Saturday week. During thc tournament
five prizes were shot for, and three of them were

The Sonoma Democrat speaks very highly of a
discovery for oblaining gold from sulphurets,
made hy Mr. Fond. The results given are truly
touishiug.
Swiss Wise Makers.—Several Swiss, bred to the
business of wine-making, lately returned from
their native land, which they had visited altera
residence of some years in California, are about to
go to Anaheim, Los Angoles couuty, to settle
there, and devote themselves to their trade.—Alta

two or three such occurrences are noticed in thc
San FranciBco papers.
Officer Rand attempted to arrest '-Steamboat
Jake," who drew a knife and severely stabbed the
officer. The latter, in -self-defence, shot at and
killed his assailant.
Gas in San Jose.—The municipality of San Jose

the contract has been awarded to Mr. James 11a-
gan, formerly of the Metropolitan Gas Works in
this city, for fifteen years. Mr. Ilagan is now busily engaged in making preparations for lighting
San ifiwe.—Setttld.
DoOBS of the Capitol.—A letter from Rome
says ihut Rogers, the sculptor, is there at work
upon a bronze door tor the Capitol at Washington, the estimated cost of which is £25,000. Thete'
are eight groups sculptured upou it, representing
scenes in the life of the discoverer of America.—
The first scene represents Columbus before tho
council of Salamanca, unfolding his great theory. In the second he isjust starting out to seek
royal aid. Iu the third he is belore the King
and Queen, laboring to convince them. Isabella"
leans forward and seems interested, but Ferdinand
scarcely deigns to heed the visiouary enthusiast.
In the lourth he is confiding his son to the care of
the monks, while his ships wait. In the fifth ha
is landing in great state npon St. Salvador. The
sixth is at Hispaniola, where one of the sailors is
bringing an Indian girl to the ship on his shoulders. The next is the great navigator's triumphal
entry into Barcelona on his return. In the succeeding one he is about to be sent home from Cuba
in chains and disgrace. Thc "last scene of all" U
death. The priests have administered to film tiie'
sacrament, one holds a crucifix for him to kiss ;
friendsand attendants aro weeping around, and
the spirit ofthe dying man is about to start on
that last great voyage from which noue return, Iu
niches surrounding these scenes, are figures and
bustB of various royal personages cotemporary
with Columbus, including Ferdinand and Isabella,
&c—JV. Y. Tribune.
Yki.low Skix*.—As the ladies are interested in
whatever improves or injures the skin, wo reproduce the following speculations on the sallowness
of complexion from the Philadelphia Ledger:
" If our Western friends can iu any way teach
their wives, daughters or cooks to keep the pearl-
ash out of their bread, all the yelloiv people, especially the yellow children, who arc supposed to bo
turned yellow by the fever aud ague and bilioui
fevers, will soon be turned white. It is a great
mistake to suppose that the yellow countenances
of the West come from bile, when it is only the
enormous quantities of pearlash eaten in the
bread that is reflected through the skin. Bread is
the staff of life, it is said- and so it is—but itis
the stall'of death, too, in this couutry. Bad bread
kills as mauy people here as bad rum. So many
people eat poisonous pearlash for bread lhat they
die by inches. Dyspepsia—that great monster disease of Lhe couutry, that deranges the liver, briugs
on costiveness, and thus liually kills the human
victim—is half the time -'pearlash." Here, in tho
East, out of New England, we have nearly driven
off the pearlash-Baleratus cooks, but not altogether. Pearlash lives here yet in bread, but in cities
and towns we have nearly whipped out tbe murderer. In the distant Western towns, beyond the
good hotels of the lakes and rivert*, pearlash, under the name of saleratus, is king, lt is pearlash
for breakfast, pcarlasn for dinner, and pearlash for
supper. It is uot any wonder, then, that the people of the East turn yellow West, aud sicken ; not
of fever and ague, bilious aud congestive fevers,
but of pearlash three times a day."
PlU-ISERVATlON BT THE ClIEMISTRY Ob1 NaTCUK.—
You remember reading ho*', upon a day uot
many years since, certain miners, working far under ground, came upon the body of a poor fellow
who had perished in the suffocating pit forty years
before. Some chemical agent to which the body
had been subjected—an agent prepared ia tlie lab-
progress of decay. They brought it up to the surface, and for awhile, till it crumbled away through
exposure to the atmosphere, it lay there, the imago
of a fine, -sturdy young man. No convulsion had
passed over the face iu death—the features were
tranquil: tLe hair was black as jet. No oue recognized thc face ; a generation had grown up since
the day ou which the miner went down into his
shaft for the last time. But a tottering old woman, who had hurried from her cottage at hearing
thc news, came up. and she knew again the face
which through all these years she had never quite
forgot. Thc poor miner was to have been her
husband the day after that on which he died.—
They wero rough people, of course, who were
looking on ; a liberal education and refined feelings are not deemed essential to tbe man whose
work it is to get up coals, or even tiu f but tbero

contrast—the one so old, the other so young.—
They had both been young these lout; years ago ;

took fire about two o'clock on Saturday morning,
June 23d. Thirty pcrsntu were sleeping in the

He may live without bocks—What js knowledge but grieving ? Ho may live without hope—What is hope but deceiving ? He may live without love—what is passion but pining? But where is the man that can live without dining? IMPORTANT TO Housekeepers, linkers, Miners, And all others who desire to have good Bread.
