We know no -announcement which ia calculated
to afford more plea-iire in the men of t-eience than
that which we publish elsewhere in regard to tba
eafe arrival at Khartum of the Kiijilisti explon-rs
Spake and firant. It has solved a question v. hioh
has puzzled lhe world miico the earliest epoch of,
civilization, nnd which will, no'dnubt. be fruitful
ofthe most important result*, Instead of ascending Uie White Nile, as had been done by all previous explorers, these travellers' entered tho into •
rlor of Africa at Zanzibar, on the eastern coast,
and struck towards the MTthweat. The last heard
from them, previous to the accounts just arrived,
was by our gOVBlninenl, tfarOUgll Mr. Goodhue, onr
Consul at Zanzibar, who staled ibat letten Bad
been received from them on the Ilili of April.
18(5'i,. from latitude one d-gtee thirty minutes
aoulh, and that they liad been thus far disappoinled
in the object of their search. From the statements
published in the Egyptian journals, it appears that
they finally succeeded in overcoming the difficulties that O|ipo-i:d I hem-el vey to their pro^rsfs, and
bad penetrated to the source ol the White Nile,
which turns out tobe tbe large lake which appears on our maps under the title of Lake Vicloria. some five or six degrees to the Houth of the
Moun tal QS ol the Moun. No details are given, as
the travelers, not wishing to have the results of
their labors anticipated by greedy publishers, had
uot been very communicative to these from whom
the Information is derived.
This adds another to the Bdrtefl of important dis
coveries which have been accomplished In our duy.
Within the last hall dozen years the solution of
the question of the existence of a great inland
Arctic sea by Kane the discovery ol the Norlbwe&t
l'Msnge by I'i in and McClintock, and the exhumation of the remains of Frobisher's expedition by Hall
have been amongst the most remarkable of tbe
triumphs thus achieved. These are likely to be
noon added to by discoveries equally important
and gratifying. In another month Mr. Hall wil
■el out on a fresh exploration of the Arctic regions
In this he has three objects iti view: first, to search
for records of Sir Johu Prank lln and his party;
Mcondly, to find the open Arctic sea; and thirdly.
to settle the question whether, according lo the
Ivquirtiax tradition, (his is a great fresh water
lake. Miuiy purs huh ridicule these expeditions
and quesliou their utility. They are wrong; for
their scientific vnlue opart, they nre of great im--
portauce to the interests of the world. The recent discoveries in Africa not only open up regions In which gold and ivory abound, but they
may afford us a solution of tho problem which Is
begtning to puzzle us—that of the luture of the
emancipated negro. In many parts of the interior
of Africa bordering on the White Nile ther« ia, we
aro told, a certiin amount nf civilisation lhat may
invite emigration. Though the process resembles
nomewhat tho "sending coals lo Newcastle," it
may h«ve Its Industrial as well a* political results
As to lha results of Artie eiploratJODS, EtPbougfa
they have not thus far proved of much benefit,
there ie no saying tn what they may lead in tbo
lutnre. If we bad no other motive for prosecuting our researches in Ihut i-nartiM-, tif iot.n-st-

Sheridan; preach this—I wrote it.' 'Give II me

he liked Dick's discourse vary well; so be did
preach it, and left Oaterly next day, the term of
his visit beiug ended. Iu a abort time clamor waa
raised against some strange man who bad delivered a sermon ugainet hypocrisy end ostentation at
Mr. Child'o ehurch, at whom itwas leveled, aud
when the preacher came forth ms candidate for
a bishopric, the clamor would have been roughly
renewed, but lhat Lady Westmoreland, bating her
futber, saw her husband patronize O'Beirne with
delight, and my lord, of course, wished tbe man
sucee§s whu had done anything to cross er to torment old Child. Il Was not, however, till lbe year
1808 that tbis odd anecdote waa related by permission ofthe Bishop, who guessed not what ha had
been doing. What a deep designer, meantime
does Ihis prove Sheridan, uuder the mask of mere
convivial gayety ! An hypocrisy far more to be
feared lhan that of the miser he justly enough ceo-

Some correspondents state that the rebels
have excavated a Inrge spaee out of the sida of
-L'.-p hill near lhe Court House, and that the wc
men and children retire into this when evor the
bombardment becomes active and dangerous, A
statement has been published, derived from rebel
sources, that one hundred and nine women and
children had been killed and wouuded in lhe town
up to the 5lb instant. All non-combatants within Vicksburg would, of course, be allowed by Gen.
Grant a safe conduct through his lines, but the
rebels have made no overtures to him for that purpose.
