HY ALBERT LBIOHIO.V,
There is a certain indescribable pathos In the
following lineta, which will remind the reader ut
Hood's "Bridge of ■ Sighs," though there fo nothing In common between the two poems BftVfl a
touching H;.diie.ss and a breathing of the ' human.1
Found dead—dead and alone;
There was nobody near, nobody near
W'vn the outcast died ou his pillow of stone—
No mother, no brother, no sista r dear,
Nut a friendly voioe to sooth or ebw r,
Not e. watching eye, or a pi tying .tear,
Found de-ad-—dead and alone
In the roofless Btreet. on a pillow of stone.
Many a weary day went- by,
(Voile wrenched and worn he begged for bread,
Tired of Life, and longing io Iia
I', ao iful down wHS the silent dead,
Hunger and cold, and scorn an I pain.
Had wasted liis form ami seared his brain,
Till at ia-t on a bed of frozen ground.
Witb a pillow of stone, was the outcast found.
Found dead—dm-id and alone
Ou a pillow ofetonc in tbe roofless etroet—
Nobody heard bis la-t faint mo,m.
Or knew when liis sad heart ceasod to beat.
No mourner' lingered with tears or sighs,
Bui the stare looked down witb pitying eyes,
Ami tbe chill winds passed with n walling Bound
O'er the lonely Bpot where his form was found.
Found d.ad—yet not alone ;
There wan somebody near, somebody near
To claim the wanderer as bia awn,
And Bod a boms for the bo elesa here,
Oas, wben every bumau dour
l- closed to bis children, scorned ami poor,
Who opens the heavenly portal wMe :
AU! God was near When tht; outcast died.

tain Jane potato. These ball-, were produced in
that #ood year f.,r potato cnltnre, 1852. In the
autumn digfrinfj of the first year, but live varieties
w?n: deemed worthy of bein,^ saved—four of
them white skinntd. and one pink eye. the skin
white with pplashes of purple. One of the white
varielies was lost tho next winter, by frost.
Thoy all suffered exceedingly by tho alrongth in
1850; but the pink eye was sti 11 promising, and
bore seed balls.
During- The past summer, inconsequence of hot
and wet weather, the potato crop here hassulTered
very severely from d sease. The three whita*
sorts above notlciid giaw d'.v,u'f. were very heal th-
ful. bore balls, but the yield was too small to^be
encouraging. The pink eye, however, has yield.-
ed remarkatdy well. In the case of twenty-four
hills, on a poor (rravelly loam soil, the yield was
but five pccks_ or two hundred and fifty-two ba&h-

but in the case of nineteen hills, planted in a
moist day. gravelly soil, of moderate fertility, the
yield was exactly two bushels, which is said to
be equal to five hundred and tea busln.ds lo
the acre. The yield of one of these hills was
tavolve pounds, and of another eleven. The tub-
crs. in both position*, wero entirely sound. But
what ia remarkable, these potatoes, in both localities, yielded on an average about twenty balls tc
tho hill. The fall being damp, as woll as the
summer, the tubers matured later than IS.'-i
This variety, in many n'spects, is the" most rc-
marfeabl-e one 1 have yet originated. I think that
in rich, warm, gravelly loam, it could easily be
made to yield six hundred bushels to the acre.
Ia the case ofthe large yield statod shore there
was no elfbrt to raise a large crop. Tho soil was
certainly but of moderate fertility, such as I prefer
in this climate for potatoes It had, moreover,

ferocity. The descending axe met hall' tray.
cleaving its skull and laying it dead at his feet—
We had no time to express our wonder and congratulations at his narrow and [singularescape,
before our attention was called to that which filled us with amazement if not dread. It was a
human skeleton, of medium size, and of a female>
hidden in the cavity ofthe tree. Eta posture wa 1
erect, and the bones were held together by a kind
of clear integument, that seemed to cover, like a
transparent skin, the entire frame. The jar of
the felled tree severed several of tbo joints, and
we drow them all out and placed them again in
form. The proportions wore perfect and the
limbs straight—indicating a contour, when in
flesh, of perfect symmetry. Who could it have
