My dear Mr. Green,
I finally succeeded in talking with Mr. Eggers, as we
discussed on the phone. His first reaction was that you would have trouble
getting the documents away from Mrs. Harris. Then as we talked, he saw that
if the matter were put in the right light she might be more willing to
comply with your request.
Consequently, I have roughed up a draft of a letter, of
the sort your mother might send her. This is merely to show the psychology
you might use in getting her to act. She wants the work of the Green brothers
to be revered as much as you do. And she should feel that their reposing in
the archives of the A.I.A. will contribute to that end. She has, on the other
hand, been very jealous of anyone else knowing anything about the Greens,
except through her and account of her. In short, she wants all the credit
for "discovering" them. So there may be counter influences that might overbalance this strategy.
However, how can you know until you try. But I think you
should prepare yourself for the idea that it might take several tries before
you succeed. At any rate, the letter authorizing her to do is the first and
necessary step to take.
Don't think that my remarks in any way take the place of
your getting legal counsel. I couldn't know less about that aspect of the
matter.
