MOZAMBIQUE
Lourenço Mutaca and Sarfu Khan Mohammed
FRELIMO -
The seminar was the first to adopt specific resolutions in order
to render effective aid to the liberation movements.
We were also impressed by the fraternal atmosphere of the
discussions. There was no indication of differences between the
delegates representing independent countries and those from countries still under colonial rule. This enabled the delegates from the
countries fighting for their independence frankly to voice their
opinions and to speak of their needs. A very important thing for us
is what we learned about the experience of other countries, the
difficulties they encounter with regard to national problems and
imperialist infiltration.
You know that our Party, Frelimo was founded in June 1962 and
held its first congress in September of that year. We have felt
since then that we must create in Mozambique basic conditions for
waging war against Portugal, for we have seen that she was not
prepared to negotiate the independence of our country with any
political group. We therefore organized the masses to ensure that
our fighters found support among them. The work took us exactly
two years. We declared war on the Portuguese colonialists last
September, and have been scoring success after success ever since.
I must say that the material aid our African and Asian brothers
have been giving us is very valuable. They send us arms, and
modern ones too. The fight is going on and we will do all in our
power to step it up and to extend the front. Its progress is most
encouraging, tand the morale of the population and the fighters is
excellent. We therefore think we will win independence sooner
