The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frente de Libertação
de Mozambique or FRELIMO) is an organisation embracing the entire
nationalist movement of Mozambique in the struggle for national
independence. PRELIMO was formed on 25th June, 1962, by the
merger of the three principal Mozambican nationalist groups,
MANU (The Mozambique African National Union), UNAMI (Unioa
Nacional African de Moçambique Independente) and UDEMAMO
(União Democractica Nacional de Moçambique), with various
nationalist groups in the interior of Mozambique. At the
formation of PRELIMO, Dr. Eduardo C. Mondlane was elected
President, his leadership of FRELIMO waS later confirmed by
the first Congress of PRELIMO held at Lar es Salaam, Tanganyika
on September 23 - 28, 1962. This conference also chose additional
members of the Central Committee of PRELIMO and approved its
consitution and programme.
The programme of FRELIMO has as its basic aim the attainment of the immediate independence of Mozambique by every
means possible. The policies of the Salazaar regime with respect
to the countries under the colonial domination of Portugal
and that regimes1 history of complete intransigence as
regards this problem, have made it quite obvious that the
independence of Mozambique can only be won through direct
action. The programme of FRELIMO, therefore requires the
preparation of the Mozambican people for the necessary
military action. It requires the attainment of complete
independence. There can be no compromise on this point.
The programme of FRELIMO gives it complete support to the
ideals of unity of the African peoples, and condemns racism
and imperialism in all their forms.
The principal organs of FRELIMO are the Congress,
the National Council and the Central Committee. The composition
of the Central Committee is as follows;
