1. I notified President von KleinSraid of the University of Southern
California that we were prepared to spend $750,000 for a library} that we would
bills as they were presentad, and tiu¿t this sum was to include everything in the way of stacks and fur . •, and that fell was all we had to
ive and all that we were ¿iving; 1 told them we would ..ive them that much
ourselves as a starter. "Biat was the understand!; . -lele published
in the paper was fictitious. Miss Brown, who has been a librarian for over
twenty years, had prepared a thesis and described the present and future needs
of the library, and she found out that they need twice as ¡such as I said I
would give. Afterwards it was presented to Mr. Crara and he studied it over
and found that it would require much more than the amount I had stated. I
suggested to Dr. von KleinSmid, not to ¿jive it as a figure, but to take say
;),000 and hold 0150,000 in addition, in the nature of ■ reserve fund. He
specify to Mr. Cram 1600,000. ïhen Miss Brown had sent out her suggestion
for the future needs and Mr. Cram said yesterday that it was twice aa much as
we were prepared to give. He said Mrs. Kerckhoff gave a building to U.C.L.A.
which is costing 78^ per cubic foot, and Mr. Cram said the library, at the very
least, not including furnishings, would cost 60^ per cubic foot, and that this
was ¡such more than we had decided to give.
Mrs. I». S. Dohanyt

Of course that is not a library.
