THRILLING ADVENTURES
/
Mark Moody Succeeds In Killing
Sladang To Join Exclusive "Club"
Shanghai Party Spends Many Weeks In Country]
Far From Civilization; Thrilling Encounter With
Animal Known As The "King Of The Jungle"
The thrills of big game hunting in French Indo-China, a
graphic description of encounters with one * of the rarest of
wild beasts, the sladang, known to hunters as the "king of the
jungle," and a vivid narrative of how he achieved the wish
of alf big game hunters to shoot one of these animals, is given
by Mr. Mark L. Moody of Shanghai, in the following letter and |
diary.
Mr. Moody was one of a party of three who travelled to I
French Indo-China for several weeks of big game hunting. He
and his friends got their wish, as may be readily understood |
from the record of the trip.
The following account is part of a long letter written by]
Mr. Moody to a friend in the United States.
IF you expect this to be a learned I
discourse on the flora and I
fauna of French Indo-China, stop I
right where you are now because I
this is written from my diary and I
is a running record of what I did I
and some of the things I shouldn't I
have done while in the jungle, and I
to find out what I got and how I did I
it you'll have to wade through this I
and take it as it comes. Before I
jumping into the diary I'll give you I
a Worm's-eye view of the country I
and, the folks there and our entry [
into the country.
We made our "approach" with the I
s.s. Andre Lebon (this is not al
new name for a niblick, it's a French |
mail steamer). We sailed from I
Shanghai on January 22 and arrived I
at Saigon on January 28. The I
weather was good and the food was I
fine. I was accompanied by Major I
and Mrs. Howard Stent of the!
Fourth Regiment U.S.M.C, who aref
keen sportsmen. I saw comparatively little of them after our arrival I
in the shooting country as they I
hunted mostly with our host and I
expert guide, Georges Tiran, and 11
hunted alone, so I've left it for them I
to tell their story and I'm telling |
yo-ti mine independently.
Tiran invited me to come to Indo-1
China to hunt with him and bring I
some friends so I invited the Stents I
to go along. Now this fellow Tiran, I
whom we nick-named "Tireless I
Tarzan," has liyed in Indo-China fori
26 years and speaks the local dialects I
,iike a native and the way he talks I
with the savages back in the jungle I
is something to listen to, and he I
reads the ground like I read a book|
except that he gets more out of it.
Add to all of this that he is about |
the best-natured, big-hearted all-
around good sport in the world andl
you have a fair idea of the man I
whose good fortune it was for me|
to hunt with and have as host.
Early Formalities
Well, to get started somewhere, we I
arrived at Saigon at daybreak Satur- |
day, January 28, after our uneventful journey from Shanghai, to bel
greeted by a sunrise rivalling all I
sunsets. I was out on deck with!
my movie camera getting a shot at-1
