Although the Nazi purge of Jews in Austria has been no secret, the strict censorship clamped down on the country when it became a part of Germany has up until now prevented any photographs as illustrative of this from slipping out of the country and showing people in their nations just how a "purge" works. In this striking photograph we see Jews, most of them elderly, on bended knees scrubbing one of the main streets of Vienna, while swastika studded Nazis look and derive a great deal of enjoyment from the humbling of their former neighbors.
