Assignment: Sailmakers. 53: Leo New cutting out a mainsail for the 60-foot schooner Kelpie. 81: Paul Newman examines 'clew corner' of a sail -- this sail a mainsail for the schooner Martha. Intricately stitched-in corner ring is called a cringle. 43: l to r (background): Leo New; Wanda New; and John Henderson 'making up' (that means folding it up for delivery) gaff-headed foresail for 65-ft schooner Martha. 042: l to r, Leo New and John Henderson 'marking tablings' to finish off a mainsail for Ackerman Newporter, a 40-ft ketch (a tabling is the hem of a sail). 058: In 'sail loft' of Pacific Sailmakers at 1415 Cota Ave, near Long Beach harbor water front, five young visitors watch sailmaker Paul Newman putting an eye-splice in a rope.
