Reporter: Gaze. Assignment: Police Chief resigns. #1-2: Police Chief H.W. 'Bill' Hutchinson of Santa Monica after handing his resignation to City Manager Randall Dorton. Police department laxity had been charged by two victorious candidates for city council in the April 12 election. Hutchinson will be re-assigned as assistant chief under civil service rules. Dorton has invited an unnamed police official, not a member of the Santa Monica department, to take the job".
