For immediate release: On Thursday, April 17, 1958, Mayor Poulson issued an official proclamation to the citizens of Los Angeles establishing Saturday, May 3rd, 1958, as 'Fire Service Day'. Those present in the Mayor's office were 'Miss Fire Service Day', Renon Cartwright; Chief Engineer William L. Miller of the Los Angeles Fire Department; Joe Brown, President of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce, and members of the Fire Prevention Committee of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce".; Supplementary material continues: "In the text of the proclamation, the Mayor urged all citizens to visit their local fire stations and acquire a more thorough understanding of this expedient servant within the community. 'Fire Service Day' is the opportune time to meet and talk to the firemen in their home away from home. Any services you may require at a later date from your Fire Department, be it emergency or informative, will be on a more personal basis and afford you the required assurance of competent help. Fire conscious Junior Chamber of Commerce locals throughout the State will be instrumental in the success of this state-wide 'Fire Service Day".
