One step nearer is new Los Angeles Sports Arena.Big excavation finished at site near Coliseum.Richard K. Yeamans, president of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission, announces that the Guy F. Atkinson Company has completed the big excavation at at Figueroa street and Exposition Boulevard, for construction of the new $8,200,000 Sports Arena. This excavation, some 30 feet below grade, totaled 190,000 cubic feet of soil. (material from the excavation, incidentally, is being used to hasten completion of the Harbor Freeway.) George E. Kinsey, chairman of the Building Committee, anticipates final plans for the 15,000-seat arena, will be completed some time next month. These plans are being prepared by Stiles and Robert Clements, architects and engineers. To assure best in design, says the announcement, people from many walks of life, including many closely identified with sports arenas or arena events, have been consulted.
