"Lurline" has union trouble ...lifeboats left hanging above gangplank by sailors in union jurisdictional dispute prevent passengers from boarding ship for half hour, 14 March 1952. Howard Morris, "Lurline" greeter; Miss Martha Schaefer, visitor, receives lei; Linda Ann Cheney, child, with aunt, Miss Madora Knix, of San Diego.; Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. City desk. Illus. Lurline trouble. One shot shows two lifeboats. Nearest one was first one to be cradled while passengers and visitors waited. Rear boat is directly over gangplank and passengers and friends were not allowed to board until lifeboat was secured, as a safety guard. Boats had been left dangling from 12:15 until 2:20 because sailors quit lifeboat drill to go ashore and eat noon meal due to stop-work meeting of cooks and stewards in jurisdictional row. One shot of lone boat hanging over gangplank. Howard Morris, Lurline greeter, is shown putting leis over head of Miss Martha Schaefer, 1738 Wooster Street, Los Angeles, a ship visitor, forced to wait in line more than half hour because of above. One shot of Linda Ann Cheney patiently holds toy while standing in line with Miss Madora Knix, her aunt. Both are from San Diego. One shot of passengers and visitors lined up for half hour awaiting cradling of lifeboat which hung over gangplank awaiting sailors return to work".
